I have heard a rumor and I HOPE that it is not true, but the rumor is that Obama has requested that federal support for the PBS network be reduced (or possibly elliminated)

If this rumor has any legitimacy, I want to fight it before it ever goes into effect. I don't think that we want to bring politics into our forum and argue over such things, but the monetary support for PBS is extremely important. If funding is reduced, we may see PBS channels reduce their activity.

I do not want to see anything of the sort happen. I am sure that you agree with this.

Now, the next step is to resolve the notion of this rumor. If there is anything to it, if any piece of it is true, then we must stand together to stop it. If it is just a rumor started to take a jab at the President's administration and it is not true, then we need to qualify and correct it.

Please don't get excited about this just yet. I only know it as a rumor and rumors are not to be taken seriously.

I am in dangerous territory here, I understand that, but I must resolve this issue

If you have any information that confirms or cancels this, I would appreciate your input here. This is a very serious item for all of us.

I will apologize to everyone if this is just a false rumor, I don't wish to alarm you for no reason. But, if there is anything to it, I want to recruit everyone that I can in support to block it.

I do not think this is new I mean I beleive it has happened before and yet somehow PBS has managed to continue to produce and provide high quality programming throughout its lifetime.

This was back in 2006, wehter it happened or not I do not know, GOP takes aim at PBS funding - The Boston Globe

A year before funding was cut yet they managed to keep going, PBS funding slashed - TV.com

I guess I am optimistic that they will manage to continue but make no mistakes about it most of the funding will keep coming from the public pledges so keep them coming folks. (look who is talking , he who has never pledged not a penny!, lol)

Some if not all of their funding SHOULD be eliminated.

I use to do a lot of work for the local PBS and every year they would upgrade their equipment because they HAD TO spend the money. So what did they do with their old equipment (stuff that was working great?) Did they give it to a local public access station or maybe a college? No they took it out to the parking lot and DESTROYED it with sledge hammers.

To make matters worse the head of our local PBS who is always begging for money takes home over a million a year. There is something wrong with that.

And from the time I worked with them that was the culture of PBS that I saw. A lot of waste. A Lot...
TNGTony
Scott, a can guarantee you that this is not the norm. As to smashing equipment rather than giving it away has to do with LAWS THAT PROHIBIT GIVING EQUIPMENT AWAY WHEN ACQUIRED WITH CERTAIN MONEYS like some grants...not just public grants. A station locally is still using U-matic 3/4 inch tapes for air!

As so "if there is no demand it should be allowed to go away" argument, it is the most short-sighted one of all. It also ignores history and the entire evolution of public TV in the first place. PBS would not even have come into existence had this attitude prevailed when the Eisenhower Administration made this educational network(for children and adults with cultural, historical, public affairs and news programming).

There are certain things that add to society that left to its own in a pure capitalist society would fail. Look at your own symphonies, zoos art museums and other items that are directly supported by taxes. The pittance of cash given by us through the feds (again less than 33 cents per american per year) that is scattered to hundreds of organizations can mean the difference between a quality organization or the beginning of a downward spiral for the organization.

But again here is where logic fails most people. They see one example of waste which may or may not be connected to the funding in question and now all NEA recipients are wasteful and never needed the money. A station find a few underwriters to cover the cost of airing one program and the leap is made that all programs are funded just fine by underwriters which is also very false.

People hear 162 million dollars and think it's a huge number. But fail to see the benefit they have been reaping by it for decades because to them, it was always there, and it will always be there. PBS is not even 50 years old. Most PBS stations are less than 40 years old. Keep that in mind. There was a time before Public broadcasting. And Public broadcasting has been the driving force behind most educational, science and historical programming. It is really the only source for cultural programming.

Amazing how 162 MILLION dollars is not "a huge number" when it's someone else's money. For 162 MILLION dollars, if people want culture, let them go to the theater or the opera or to a foreign film festival and pay for it themselves. In case anyone has missed it, America and indeed the rest of the world is in a huge financial crisis. I'm not anti-culture or anti-PBS, I'm anti-irresponsible spending. Our government should learn what every housewife on a budget knows: If you spend more than you have, you will get into financial difficulty, and you can't "spend your way out of trouble" or somehow "stimulate" yourself into a better financial position with the continued irresponsible use of credit without unpleasant consequences. Somehow we've gotten the mindset "I can't be overdrawn, I still have checks left". Pull PBS or any other nonessential government-supported porker kicking and squeeling away from the breast of the American taxpayer, and it will find another way to survive. Tax dollars would be better spent elsewhere.

once again, 162,000,000 (the entire amount the NEA gets) divided by 300,000,000 = .54¢. Your share cannot buy one can of coca-cola in most places. It is not a lot of money when compared to the total 2010 budget which is $3,552,000,000,000. Let's put it another way: 162 million is one one thousandth (1/1000th) the amount the US paid in INTEREST on the national debt in 2010. PBS gets the largest chunk of NEA spending which is where the 33¢ per person in the US was derived.

For 162 MILLION dollars, if people want culture, let them go to the theater or the opera or to a foreign film festival and pay for it themselves.
You need to brush up on your history. The reason for the NEA's founding in the first place and for PBS and NPR's existence was because NOT EVERYONE CAN AFFORD IT! And the NEA makes it possible for orchestras, symphonies, ballet troupes, art museums, playhouses, theaters and other cultural attractions to EXIST in the first place.

President Eisenhower (R) (1953-1961) saw that commercial radio and TV were not picking up the slack. This was even before the time of the "vast wasteland" of broadcasting (Newton Minnow, 1961). Eisenhower set into motion what would become the NEA, President Johnson (D) (1963-1969) founded the Nat. Endowment for the Humanities and the NEA so that those who would not or could not be exposed to cultural educational and historical programming could do so for free and without having commercial concerns color the programming.

It was President Nixon (R) (1969-1975) that presided over the formation of PBS. When Nixon took office, the NEA/NEH budget was about $6 million (1970 dollars-about $32.5 million 2010 dollars). In 1974 the NEA'a budget grew to nearly $40 million a year (About $187 million 2010 dollars). Nixon said this would "bring arts to millions of patrons, help financially strapped museums and orchestras, induce more private philanthropy, improve writing skills, redress the balance between the sciences and the humanities, and bring the lesson of history to bear on racial and generational tensions."

This need (which was exactly what Johnson said when he founded the NEA/NEH) has not changed. Only the memory of how things were before the existence on this organization has. Also keep in mind that 1972/73 was the time of the oil embargoes, and a severe recession and rampant inflation.

In case anyone has missed it, America and indeed the rest of the world is in a huge financial crisis.
Okay. That is this session of Congress' reason. But identical arguments have been made each and every year that deficits become the political hot potato. NEA is the first thing they look at. 0.06% of the budget is the first thing they look at. Again, when a $50,000 household needs to save money, cutting a $15 year expense is not the first priority.

I'm not anti-culture or anti-PBS, I'm anti-irresponsible spending. There's a lot in that last statement and once again 0.06% of the national budget is not the cause of this, but okay. Let's say we cut all "non essential" federal spending.
Serious question here, you don't have to answer it and I do not want to have this thread closed because it turns political, but ask yourself what is non-essential?

Should we close the national park system? Not sell the property, just no longer fund the NPS and close the parks to the public. No services. Leave them as wild areas with no management. Their budget in 2009 was $2,924,000,000 or nearly 19 times more than the NEA. Look at the savings. This is even after the $20 admission fee was put into place years ago and mineral rights being sold in certain parks. Now imagine the money the US could get if the property was leased for development? How much would the Hilton pay to lease a spot next to the Grand Canyon or Old Faithful? Just one lease deal would more than cover 10 years' worth of NEA funding.

I wager that more people became familiar with the national park system watching Ken Burns' documentary than visited national parks that year. (on average PBS had 133 million viewers each month - 1.6 billion clicks on the turnstile each year . In 2009 the national park service had 275 million clicks on their turnstiles)

Tony, my last post on this also as I have already made my position clear, and yes, I do hope people use whichever side of their brain necessary to process this information without letting emotion get in the way of rational thinking.
Again to clarify, I am not anti-PBS, culture, arts, science, or nature, I am against funding of these things using tax dollars. I will assume your numbers are correct on budgets, etc; the numbers aren't the total point anyway.
It doesn't matter if my "share" is .54 or not, it's not a "share" if I'm forced to pay it. This is not personal, just a rhetorical question, but Who are you or anyone else to determine what my "share" is? I cannot pay .54 less than the IRS says I owe without getting into trouble. The fact that I am forced to pay for someone else's entertainment is partly what I object to. Forcing me to pay for something you enjoy but I might not, [although I do enjoy it and would pay out of my pocket of my own free will to enjoy it] sounds suspiciously like "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need" to me. [quote Karl Marx].
Marxism aside, PBS is not a need, it is, in its distilled form, entertainment. You can call Nova and Nature educational if you wish [and they do have educational aspects], but bottom line, they are entertainment, and I can get the same entertainment and "education" watching "Animal Planet" or some similar commercial programming. Cultural and arts programming is available on the air also.
Do they have an enriching effect on those who enjoy them? Of course, but they're not the saviors of the nation they are portrayed to be.
I don't really need to brush up on my history, I was around when Eisenhower was president before PBS, and I clearly remember that our country was a great nation even without PBS. In fact [not blaming this on PBS], the moral fabric of our country has degraded since the days of PBS.
I don't accept the premise that PBS makes a person better, it just entertains those who gravitate toward that kind of programming. There are those who believe that all a human being needs to be "good" is more money, equal opportunity, and exposure to the "right things and right people". The fact is, you can take a criminal and expose him [or her to be politically correct] to all the PBS programming they can stand and it won't change a thing. If it could, the prison system in our country would be using it to "rehabilitate" prisoners, and we could expect a lower rate of recidivism than we're seeing. [I can see where constant exposure to Barney might have an effect, I'm just not sure what it would be in someone who already has issues with society]
I do not want to see the kind of programming that PBS airs go away, I am simply saying it will not go away if there is a real demand for it, and I believe there is. The American people are the most generous people in the world, and they will step in wherever there is a need or to fund something they enjoy. Others should not be forced to pay for someone else's entertainment any more than I should expect you to pay for my car repairs.
This post is over nothing. Even if this topic were not based on rumor, the fact is, congress doesn't have the fortitude to make tough decisions, if they did, our country wouldn't be in a financial crisis in the first place. I love the quote by the late President Reagan: "Congress is like a baby, an insatiable appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other end."
Part of the problem is that there are so many special interests, all screaming for federal dollars, who feel their pet project is worthy. Patrons of the arts want PBS, environmentalists and nature lovers want national parks; all worthy things to be sure, but the government [read you and me] has no business taking money they [we] don't have to [forcefully] fund them. See the problem? So many interests, so few dollars, so much debt.
Many are not sensing the gravity of the situation we're in. Foreign countries, notably the Chinese have "purchased our markers" so to speak. They are now even telling us how much money we can print, they are literally starting to direct some of our financial affairs, with more demands to come. The Russians and Chinese, knowing that our dollars are not worth the paper they are printed on, are demanding that the world monetary standard be based on some currency other than dollars. We are one hiccup away from total financial ruin and this will become painfully aware to all of us if we don't come to the realization that we can't continue on like it is not happening.
Pardon me for quoting from the Bible: "The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender." Our debtor nation is now the servant of our soon-to-be Chinese masters. We must stop the bleeding caused by spending more than we have, and I'm sorry but 162 million dollars for NEA, or any other worthy but nonessential cause is a pretty severe cut in my opinion. Yes, a drop in the bucket compared to our staggering national debt to be sure, but many drops will fill the bucket or drain the bucket, depending on whether there are any leaks.
Understandably, no one wants their project cut, but unless we set aside our personal interests for the overall good of the country, we cannot take measures to get ourselves out of trouble. I for one am convinced that my personal interests during this time of crisis is secondary to the good of the country, and I am also convinced that, unfortunately this is a minority view. This is the "I problem"; I want what I want, when I want it, as often as I want it because I deserve it, I like it, and I don't care about the consequences. This seems to be the prevailing attitude today.
Clearly you feel strongly about PBS but truth is, if the government cut funding for national parks and PBS today, someone would step in to support them by choice, rendering federal support needless.

I know a few people who have plug and play receivers with boomboxes that use them at work due to lack of cell phone service, especially in factory environments surrounded by steal. Someone I used to work with is a FedEx driver now and uses a plug and play receiver in his work truck. In the off-chance when he's in a Sprinter van, he'll use the app via Bluetooth, but his normal truck its a plug and play with a vehicle kit. So while there is a limited market for them, it still exists.

I did that as well, putting one in my Work truck with the antenna kit, trying to do it so WORK didn't see it. :)

I tried to do that, when I did delivery driver work (2010- 2013), we had a fleet of Freightliners. The newer trucks had headunits that were satellite compatible (XM only I think), but lacked the antenna and guts. I got a car kt for my old Roady XT and tried to use it, but at the volume levels I needed have it at to hear it over the diesel engine it sounded like crap, so I used my phone with an aux cable. When I was in the middle of nowhere with no cell service it didn't do me any good though.

At my current job, one of our new cars has the free trial of SXM active, I frequently have to go off site to a location 75 miles away in a rural area and it's nice being able to use the service off of the satellites versus using the app. There are many places on this journey where all three providers lack service.

I have to think maybe more people dont keep track of the monthly XM bill. Every time i renew i put a reminder on my calendar week before its time to renew. My wife told me the other day not to renew her and then i told her you are not going to be able to listen to XM at home. Then she changed her mind...!!

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

tanman shows the Hopper 3 without the Hopper Plus. The Hopper 3 connected to Hopper Plus has a different screen which for me does not have Amazon Alexa either, probably because with the Hopper Plus connected, the DISH Settings is actually an app on the Hopper Plus.
Yep, I got a Joey 4 (designed to work with H Plus) and no Alexa iconl

Guys,
Android is Google. Google is Android. Android OS and Google TV are the same thing.
The Hopper+ and Joey 4's run Android TV, which is Google's television version of Android.
That means under the hood, you have:
  • Linux kernel
  • Android framework
  • Google TV / Android TV interface
  • Google Play Store for TV apps
Alexa is the competition. Google is not going to host their competition.
The old Hopper Carbon UI is NOT Google so that's why Alexa was on there.
H
Understood. But here's the rub - Google Assistant setup is ALSO missing from the Hopper Plus setup. I'm a paraplegic.and need to use voice controls as much as possible but I can't press a button on the remote to activate Google Assistant. I prefer ALEXA (or ALEXA+) but I have one older google device and will go that route IF they make it available. BTW calling Dish Customer Service is no help- they just say they have no info on if/when there will be an update.

Several Dish offers showed up today in my account. Once you choose one the rest are removed. Offers were Showtime, Starz, AMC and others.

Picked up a sweet directv dish, mount, twin lnbs and a short cable.
Has anyone converted one to FTA? A Frankenstein of sorts...

Yes, many have hacked a DirecTV or Dish Network dish before. Quite undersized, but would receive the 97w KU stations with an LNBF swap. Make a template to set the LNBF face angle and distance from the reflector. Remove the current circular polarity LNBFs and make a bracket to hold the replacement linear LNBF in the correct centered position. Remember to set the polarity skew.

would probably also work well for NHK on 101W and possibly for PBS on 99W. I used one for a while on 30W. Just keep in mind that because it's undersized for those satellites, it might work fine in clear weather but won't have much margin to account for signal degradation during rain/snow

If you can find one, the Shaw / Star Choice 75e ellipticals are great for use on 97, 99, and 101W. They are really just rebranded ChannelMaster 75 cm reflectors and use linear LNBFs by default out of the box.

Everyone else's mileage may vary.

I have read that some have converted this type dish but after giving it a good look, it's the lnb conversion that is the bottleneck. Does anyone have a picture of their attempt to configure the lnb? I watched a video on youtube from the save it for parts guy and he used duct tape! Guess it worked but I'm thinking something a bit more permanent!
Thanks to all for your interest and replies...

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

That's the point at which innovation ends, and there's no longer any point to software engineering other than swatting bugs that result from misapplication.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

... and people who couldn't do it at all now can.
Misapplication isn't something that the casual coder can identify. They can only discover, the hard way, that it doesn't work at some point.

You're not wrong, but that's part of learning. Whether from others or our own mistakes, we've all learned that lesson one way or another.

I'm not sure that the school of hard knocks is the quickest or surest education to find your way.

There are many examples in the headlines of people getting burned multiple times and not wavering in their pursuit of stupidity.

Good thing not everyone will have to learn the hard way then. The same tools can explain why something broke.

This is true of literally anything, though.

Happy to agree to disagree, but I'm already enjoying the dividends personally and helping others at work and at home do the same.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Please post your remote make/model here and any details of your issue. We are looking to collect as many examples as possible. I may reach out to you for your receiver number, but please do not post it here.

If you've already reported this to me, please repost it here so I can track all instances in one thread.

Thanks!

I have a solution that is guaranteed to work.
All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!
Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won:)

Loaded H713 software on my Hopper 3 last week. Have not seen any change in the IR/RF remote issues with my Harmony 700.
Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?
I'd be happy to roll back to last July.
