I'm looking at picking up a 8.5' solid Birdview. However it would be a good drive there and back. The owner has been quite helpful in supplying information, but I still have a few questions for those who already have one.

1. The pole size is 6" OD, which I have heard before. As the nearest steel pipe OD dimensions are 5.56 and 6.63", I'm curious what others have used. Would it be better to scavenge the tube a la Anole? Maybe I should cut it off at the ground and weld it onto something else.

2. Does anyone know what the maximum motor angles a Birdview motor can achieve? The scans of Birdview literature here suggest +/- 60 degrees or +/- 70 degrees. That's kind of on the edge for me because I would like to get to 74 degrees for eastern coverage. If anyone has experience in driving their Bridview motor to its extreme, I'd very much appreciate hearing from you. If you don't know the motor angle for your most extreme satellites, simply provide your lat/long and the lowest bird you can hit. I can then calculate the motor angle.

Thanks!

Just curious, am I the only one who has saved all the poles to all the BV's I've owned when transplanting? It really isn't that hard to do! Maybe its cuz I used to help put 'em in new.

In any case, if when installing you have "cut and welded" per the other posts, Still reccomend the installation of the "fins" by welding to the pipe below ground. Your pipe will never move from changes in concrete, corrosion, or anything else. The fins on the pipes were part of the BV "best build" for consumers, and part of the reason as dealers we didn't have to worry about our installs! Some will argue it would take years for corrosion to cause this, but they were there for a reason! Consider the leverage that above ground dish gives to the pole if it even TRIES to move!
P
Thanks for everyone's inputs and ideas!

Based on radio's, stogie's and phlat's insight, I'm planning to take sufficient weapons in the truck. At the worst I'll cut off the tube at ground level and later weld it to an extension pipe. At best we'll dig it out and drag it up with my truck, followed by some sledge/air hammer retouching.

It sounds as though the limits of travel may vary a bit with different Birdview motors. Phlat got to a motor angle of about 68.9 degrees according to my calculations, but that's right at his limit. Linuxman hits 30W at about a 66.9 degree motor angle with some extra travel still left. I'll be real curious if and when I can get the motor on the bench to see what it can do. Maybe there's another mod in store. If I can hit 74 degrees I'll make 37.5W, which is one of my more interesting birds. I'd love to be able to roll it down to 30W, but a 3 degree elevation generally requires a fixed mount with my other dishes.

I'm not counting my chickens, yet, but everything looks like a go at this point. I will have negotiating to do at the city level, but I'm planning to offer to take down my 1.8m Fortec, which causes me nothing but mini-hassles, and put the Birdview much more out of sight. I'm hoping it will be an even better match for a dual ortho. Thanks again for everyone's suggestions!

I have the whole birdview pole from the only one birdview that I have. :D I would say you've one-upped me becuase you've saved the poles from several birdviews instead of just one.

I was surprised how the concrete cleved into big chunks when whacked a few times with the blunt end of a digging bar, so removal may not be as bad as one would think once you move some dirt out from around the center pole and can hit the concrete a few times to see if it will shatter into large pieces.

Exactly right! It breaks off the pole easily!!! A little work going "in" to the transplant makes for less engineering work on the "new" location.

When running the mount from Horizon to Horizon, look out that you don't run the dish off the gear. Those solid units may not have any mechanical limit switches on the gear plate. Be sure to watch the dish when setting things up! The bolt in the middle of the dish is 1 inch and 1/8 socket. With a breaker bar and the socket, the removal of the bolt is easy as there is not much room between the vertical fins.

Good advise from Radio. Get the whole system! Break the concrete off and bury it in the hole.

I wouldn't suggest this to anyone else without inserting a big grin, but . . .
If it's east you want, and not west...
You could install the pole with a 10° or 15° east tilt.
I'll say no more.

I've done crazier things in my life, but I think I'll look into other options first :) I will need a chain saw to adjust the alignment down to 55.5W. Thus I'm not even sure this location will have visibility to 37.5W. The harvest is scheduled for tomorrow, after which I start working with the city for approval.

I am a little late in this post but I thought I would comment.

Before I got my BV I had another big dish that had a 3.5 inch pole. I had filled that with concrete and even had put in "L" shaped rebars in the bottom, shallow footing.

I cut off the BV pole as close to the ground as I could with a circular saw with one of those black, metal cutting blades. Since my dish is over my roof, I put the six inch BV pole over that one. I drilled holes through the BV pole. Since the BV pole was about six feet long, the holes I drilled were two near the top (but under the mount) and two near the bottom at right angles to the ones at the top. I drilled smaller holes in the inner pole and tapped those, so that the bolts would go through the BV pole and screw into the inner pole. It was a bit of a concern that I would ruin the drill bits or the tapper when going through the concrete in the inner pole, but that really didn't happen. Then with the nuts on the bolt threads I was able to plumb the BV pole exactly. A longer carpenter's level is best for the plumb work on that.

Ultimately, after I was satisfied that the rig was plumb and tracking the arc well, I cut a two inch by two inch port in the BV pipe near the top, taped up the bottom so the concrete didn't pour out, and worked concrete into the pipe. As I was filling it, I hit it repeatedly (but not too hard) with a rubber mallet. That got all the air out of the concrete. Since it was my last chance to plumb it all up, I checked it when the concrete was still wet and was prepared to do fine adjustments for plumb - didn't have to.

Worked out good. Hasn't moved. Even though there is a big difference in the diameters of the poles, in my situation, the 3.5 goes from the ground to the bottom of the eaves, and the six inch BV pole goes from the top of the roof to the mount - so you hardly notice it.

Oh. I am out at about 115 degrees west and get everything from 55.5 west to 139 west. Like others, I haven't pushed the motor all the way in either direction

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

As I recall you have the Flex package. Do you sub to multisport? -02 is FS1 and -03 is ESPN. -01 is Fox so you would get that if you sub to locals.

As an edit, you need to sub to the National Action Pack at $12 a month to receive those channels.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.

The only thing I can see that is compelling is the AV1 decoding done in the A19's hardware instead of the current ATV4K's processor.

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Actually, it is. A couple of people PMed me when I posted this, and when I asked for an address, they never responded. Then I just sort of let it go. Send me a PM to continue the discussion

Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

This will be a SAD DAY when this passes ....

They complained the last year that we had a bunch of Blow Outs in the Playoffs ... heres an idea, lets Double the amount of teams and hope for Closer games ... ya right.

This never should have went past 8 teams, 10 at the most.

Now, I have heard that play in games are being talked about, such as #13 plays #24 and so forth, to cut the field down (why cut it down, just don't expand it.)
I'm not sure exactly how thats going to work out or if it was just someone talking.

They were also talking about starting the Season earlier ...

I really don't like the National Championship game being the end of January ... if the Semi Finals are over New Years, thats fine with the Championship game the next week.

There are 68 Power 4 teams, so eventually they will get there I wouldn't imagine ...
