I live in an orphan county, Lamar County, Alabama. We are assigned to the Columbus-Tupelo-West Point (MS) DMA. Making this brief as possible, we, the residents of Lamar County, would prefer to view Alabama locals, or to be more specific-news, sports and weather from our home state, Alabama. Where syndicated programming originates is immaterial. We have a petition with over 3000 signatures from viewers in Lamar County that attests to this. 3000 signatures in a small rural county is huge.

The FCC says, and I can provide documentation, that we are eligible to receive "significantly viewed" stations now. Our significantly viewed stations include three Alabama stations:

Lamar (referring to Lamar County, Alabama, from the FCC link provided below)
WCBI-TV, 4, Columbus, MS
+WTVA, 9, Tupelo, MS
WBRC, 6, Birmingham, AL
WVTM-TV, 13, Birmingham, AL (formerly WAPI)
+WDBB, 17, Bessemer, AL

http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/significantviewedstations031011.pdf

Why are these not the stations we receive? Why do we receive channel 27 WLOV, West Point, MS., and 45 WKDH Houston, MS.? These are not on our significantly viewed list.

Also, the National Association of Broadcasters says this about local programming for orphan counties in a report to the FCC in January of this year:

"...if the key is local sports and news, that programming can and is being licensed for delivery to in-state viewers without having to duplicate a station's entire national and syndicated programming lineup. Where there is a will, NAB suggests, there is a technical way that does not require the government to intervene."

To get to the point, what is Dish Network's opposition to this? Are they getting by cheaper this way? In other words, making more from customers in Lamar County than in adjoining counties? Have they just "taken the studs" on us? Just what is it? I'm just asking for an honest answer.

I'm going to let this go by the wayside and ask the moderator to close the thread.

It's obvious that Dish reps are not going to answer any of this, which is not surprising, since they have a history of ignoring things they can't or won't answer.

Thank you all for your responses,

John

Do you often ask your vehicle mechanic to address traffic jam issues on your morning drive or your computer guru to pressure your ISP to offer you better speed or lower rates? That's effectively what you're asking the DIRT people to do.

I ask my mechanic (I'm surprised that a techno-geek wouldn't know they are technicians now) when my car doesn't run right. My satellite system doesn't run right-it provides news, sports and weather that's immaterial to my life. Go back to your tweeters and woofers and sub-whatevers. You'll be much happier there.

He's apparently not going to listen -er - read anything that does not agree with his position on this. He doesn't need our permission to send letters or write open letters, and if he doesn't think it is a waste of time, that's up to him. If those channels are significantly viewed then they should be available OTA. Problem solved. Otherwise, to me, just get a provider that gives you those channels. It's not a Dish problem per se - they are providing network channels just not the ones he wants.

If the implication is we're beating a dead horse, that may be. But we can damn well beat it 'til we bloody the whole barnyard.

I have read and listened. I've talked and corresponded with US senators and representatives. I've corresponded with the FCC, Dish dispute resolution team, and failed at communications with Nielsen.

Bottom line is that the FCC says that satellite providers CAN provide the SV channels, it's up to them. Dish says they cannot because of FCC rules and regulations.

One is lying. My hunch is that it's Dish. But we have to find out which.

Over the air signal is so poor in central Lamar County that it's not an option. And significantly viewed channels have to with viewing habits also. Whether it's "OTA" or cable. You'd take all day to find a half dozen antennas in this county.

People all over the country are fighting this issue. I've communicated with them. It's not something that's going away. I appreciate Iceberg's view of it, but I'm not certain it's 100% dead on. Other's have responded with meaningful suggestions.

Tampa, I thank you for your earlier comments, but this is all so complicated that it's really not a matter of me not listening, but trying to sort it all out.

The issues that you have are not tecnical. Asking technical support for answers to philosophical or business decision questions is wasting your time and theirs.

Also SatelliteGuys is proud to work with DISH Network and now we have DISH Network staff on hand to help you out with DISH Network issues! We are proud to have the DISH Network Internet Response Team (or as we refer to them as DIRT) on SatelliteGuys.US!

This is from an email sent to me 11/05/2011 from satelliteguys. I suppose everyone got it. It says nothing about technical issues, nor does it mention "business or philosophical" issues. It says nothing about "DIRT" (God, that's so cute it's sickening) being for technical issues only. It says "DISH Network issues". Period. This is an issue with Dish Network and some of its customers. If you have no issues with Dish, I fail to see how it concerns you.

Unless, it takes Dish representative time away from you and your techno-geek problems. So as I said before, go back to your tweeters and woofers and such and you'll be much happier.

You have got your answer from the DIRT team (who has no control over programming) so not sure wat more we can do for you. The issue is a federal one that DISH has no control over.

So not sure what else that can be said that hasn't already so we will close this one to prevent additional arguing on the subject. :)

BTW I should note that I agree with you on the SV situation.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Yeah. It's probably something going on with the MacBook as my iPhone has been pretty snappy.

I rebooted my MacBook Air and it's zipping right along. Sorry, but it was taking over 20 seconds to load pages, with the pulsing blue bars so it was munching on something.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Well, I helped him set up a gmail acct....I actually wanted to see what the new process is for setting up a gmail acct since it had been years since I set mine up. Anyway, I showed him how to forward the emails he wanted to keep over.

Can't help but wonder if a worker overlooked checking the harness. I rarely ride a roller coaster anymore but when I do I check the harness myself pretty aggressively.
Can't imagine what the son is going through.

Back on the Goliath Roller Coaster ... I'm interested to find more details as well ...
Like where on the track did this happen (somewhere I read that it was on the climb up the top), which is impossible ...

They really need to take that ride and add at the very least, seatbelts ...

The Park is opening back up on Friday, the ride will Not be opening ... personally, I would keep it closed until different type of restraints can be designed and installed (over the winter).

I find it hard to believe that this ride is even allowed to be running with the restraints that exist at the moment, there are other rides that use the same type and they have been shut down across the country.

You got to believe that every ride has at least 2 types of restraint systems in place.

I wonder what and when we will hear from the Manufacturer ... and whatever governing bodies control these ...

Just think, this is a Major Amusement Park .... I would not have any problem getting on the Roller Coasters I have rode ...

Imagine what these County Fairs and others like them, I would not be caught Dead on one of them ... they get put up and tore down every other week, where is the safety for those rides ... No Thank You.

Had no idea there were that many redundancies built into those restraints.

It makes sense, however, I would want more types of restraints, so if one doesn't work, the other does ... the restraints coming over the shoulder I would have expected ... with a Seat belt as last resort.

Fwiw, I inquired with what they use on Coasters at Cedar Point, various Coasters, different restraints according to what the car and track requires ...

NONE of the Coasters at CP use THAT particular system :)
I'm glad to see ...

with a Seat belt as last resort.
According to the article, when you see a seat belt on a ride like this, it is basically used as a way of making sure the rider isn't too large/fat to safely ride the ride.

I just received 6 receiver 2 port mini Multiswitch and it work great, no external power need it, and you can connect 6 receiver instead of 4 on most Mini Multiswitches... If anyone is interested in where they can get one PM me....

Have you tested using external power? Over the years, have found unpowered polarity switching to be unreliable. Especially problematic when used with DiSEqC motors or switch stacking.
H
No I have not. I just got it the other day and it is connected to six receivers working just fine. What I do is non power mini multi-switches work best with LNBF's and with LNB's

I bought the fixed color version of these bulbs for my store several years ago...work great and no more replacing ballast. Finally had one go out and when I went back to Amazon I saw that now they come in selectable versions so no more guess work as to what color light would do best in a certain area. They are now double OR single ended...used to be strictly one way or the other. If any of you are looking at replacing the old style 4 or 8 ft bulbs, you might want to give these a try. The 8 footers are BRIGHT. I put 5 in my shooting/target shed and you can get a decent tan if you are in there long enough.

When we re-lamped my in-Laws' house for sale last year, we were able to get all the Edison bulbs and a few fixtures with switch-selectable Color Temperature. We tried a few and settled on 3000°K as the best fit for the house. Matching the lighting in all the rooms made for an inviting experience. The Shop was the only place that we went with 4000°K for the LED 4' fixtures.

The house was sold within a month of going on the market, so we must have done something right.

The other advantage is if the new owners decide that they prefer a warmer light, they can unscrew the bulbs (I think it was close to 70 bulbs) and set them to the 2500K/2700K settings.

I'll have to check these out. Thanks!
