As title says, I've had my AzBox for 6 months now and thought I would share a few observations I found out but have not seen in other posts or on other forums.

This is my first FTA receiver. I have the two tuner model. The A tuner is hooked to a GeoSat Pro 1.2m Ku dish on a DG-380 H-H motor. The B tuner is hooked to a Sadoun 2.4m C-band dish through a G-Box V3000 positioner and a 24" actuactor.

For editing tools, I am using Filezilla 3.5.3, Maz 3.2.0.0 and ACC 1.1 to download, edit and reload the three criteria all_channel.dat and antenna_list.dat and DVBS.dat files.

AzBox Premium + Observations:

1. There is a steep learing curve getting this box up and running and, probably even more so to get it stable. Very, very picky about settings and sequences. Not sure I would recommend this as the first box for someone getting into the hobby. If I had it to do over again, I'd spend time with a cheap and easy-to-use box to get my Ku and C band dishes up and running and then progress to the AzBox. For that matter, I'd never try the "C-band on a Ku dish" experiment at all (that was a waste of my time). Tough troubleshooting set up when you have not had anything working and you are trying to figure out where to start.

2. I did have the AzBox external power supply die on me within a few months. It was a component failure that took out an internal fuse. This appears to be a wider ranged problem that has been addressed in production. Got a warranty replacement; so far so good. If it goes again I plan on building my own using separate +24V and +12V power supplies and just wire them to the AxBox connector. That little power supply gets way to hot. I suspect it was designed in Europe for 240VAC and therefore draws double the current when running on US 120VAC.

3. The USALS works like a champ. I set my south satellite at 83W and was done after one tweak to get a better signal on PBS at 125W. I can get 30W to 125W on Ku. For some reason, I have to set the positoner to DiSEqC 1.2 not USALS for the satellite at 34.5W. The USALS puts the dish too far west. Tweaking it manually brings signal quality from <30% to a solid 80%. This is the only Ku bird I have to mess with at all, ever. Funny thing is USALS works for 30W and 45W on either side of it just fine.

4. There is very little control over audio in this box. For services that transmit AC3 audio on different channels like NBC does, you can make yourself crazy using the "yellow" button to try to find the audio as they switch commericals, show and news vocals. It is all but impossible to watch services that transmit the TV audio on the left channel and some radio station on the right channel like Silverbird TV on 37.5W at 3775 H 2143 for example. Need to be able to selectively turn off/on individual audio channels and have a redirect to a center channel so we can select what we want to listen to.

5. Not sure what is happening but some HD channels cause the box to take more than double the amount of time to change channels and respond to a remote key. For example, if I am on the Fox "Cops" feed on 99W 4060 V 27780 and am watching the SD feed, the box responds normally. If though I am watching the same HD feed, it takes ~10 seconds for the box to respond to a channel change. This happens only on HD channles but not all HD channels.

6. On the subject of HD channels, what is wrong with eScapes HD? Audio sounds great but the update rate is not HD. I can't watch this. Looks like it drops frames. I assume it is an AzBox issue as I cannot believe anyone would transmit that poor of quality and represent it as HD.

7. I find the AzBox to be very sensitive to antenna position for C band S2 signals ... even on the same satellite I may have to move it. I can get some signals at position X then need to tweak the dish a couple of click west to get one and then have to go back east 3 or 4 clicks to get another. Not all S2 signals have this issue but ones that do I have learned to just tweak it and be done. Satellites that I like to watch like 103W, 101W and 87W are among the worse that have this issue for me.

8. Finally, I find h.264 channels will lock up the box if I tune to them and the signal is poor for any reason. For example, on 99W there are some ABC h.264 feeds at 4120 V 30000 and 4140 V 30000. If they are blocky when I tune them in, the box will lock up and not display anything else until a reboot. I can change channels but nothing displays and no audio is played. The only thing I can do is a power reboot. After reboot all is well unless I tune right back to the poor quality h.264 signal where it will lock again.

G-Box V3000

1. The G-Box V3000 works well through DiSEqC 1.2 once it is set up. But... a blind scan causes the software limits to be reset and the dish will go to the full east or west limit and "Error-2" out. I have learned to go to Sathint.com and just look for changes and add them manually. Blind scan is very slow anyway with the AzBox and frankly I have not found much using it.

2. Moving distances either direction virtually guarantees the count will be off. This is another widely discussed issue it seems. I track the C-band arc from 37.5 W to 131W. If I move short distances from satellite to satellite... say 91W to 99W then to 101W I find the count error is small and the dish stops close enough to get a good Q signal. If I move a large distance... say 50W to 103W at one move, but when the dish stops it will not show a signal and will always need to tweak the position using the G-Box remote control. Lots of discussion out there about reed switches but it sure acts like a bug (way too predictable and repeatable and pervasive).

Edit Software Observations:
1. Do as much as possible with the edit tools and not in the AzBox itself. Deleting satellites or more than one channel at a time or renaming a channel can cause unpredictable results if you do it via remote control and AzBox.

2. Use Filezilla *only* to retrieve the three files. Use Maz *only* to edit the files. Use ACC *only* to relaod the files back to the AzBox. Use of any other tool or mixing use of these three can (will) cause unpredictable results.

3. Even in Maz, it is always best to do one thing, save the file and reload it rather than doing several of the same thing in a row. For example, deleting multiple channels off a satellite then saving can cause unpredictable results. It is always better to delete a channel, hit save, then reload before deleting the next.

4. In Maz if you get a memory violation error, stop what you are doing, do not save the file and start over at last save.

5. If you enter frequency and SR in Maz, be sure to always add three zeros to the field. 3710 H 27000 for example must be entered in freq as: 3710000 and in SR as: 27000000

6. Not sure why there is so much discussion and concern about this being a Unix-based box though. You do not need to be a Unix-guru to use this box. Having a real good understanding of how to get a wireless connection set-up will be of more use than knowing any Unix at all.

Hope this helps someone in setting up or making a buying decision.

Jim,

I honestly cannot agree with your statement here wholly. Truly, it could be a lot better, I agree with that. But, the box can do a lot of really nice and amazing things if you are willing to be patient with it. Some items need a bit of extra "gloss" in order to overcome their stigma. But, in all fairness, there are many boxes out there which are much worse and do less.

Remember this STB was never designed for North America, It was designed for Europe and N.A. was an afterthought and not that large of a market for this receiver. All the editor programs were designed by individuals in Europe as no one in N.A. seemed intelligent enough to create one of their own to share with others.

Will this receiver do everything? No, but it does alot more then most other receivers out there and so far I know of no other STB that will do 4:2:2 signals and even those yet to appear on the market will not have that ability.

But in all honesty, with 4 Azbox's here I do not have the problems many others have and I use them all on a daily basis.
I have my own sat/channel lists in my receivers set to my particular setup here and these azbox's are still the swiss army knife of STB's out there to date for receiving satellite signals.

I summarized some of StarGaze's pertinent points above and to all of these, I agree. Having used many different makes and models of IRD's, I must say that no box is without its own set of pros and cons. The biggest problem of any box is that it always has critics. It is human nature to dwell upon the negative as that is what annoys us most. This is, however, a good thing as it is also what instills within us the desire to set out to improve it or search for solutions or resolutions.

One thing that I can state is this. There was a period early on when I first bought my AZBox when I began to question my purchase. At first this box was the cat's meow and I was thrilled with a new box. Then the newness wore off and as I discovered all the potentials of the box, I also discovered its deficiencies. But, as time wore on, I began to find all the loopholes and tricks to overcome the deficiencies. Today, I am quite confident and pleased with the AZBox.

I'm sorry Radar, but I can't agree with you. I have been as patient as anyone could be, but since I have benched the AZ Box and went back to the Quali TV I have been watching more TV and starting to enjoy the hobby again. I've tried to watch You Tube and I have tried to use the broswer, with no luck. I have to reboot it everytime I turn it on. I will say the channel list hasn't went south since right brefore christmas, that's a record. I had read a lot of posts about it and had reservatons about buying one, but I never thought it would be this user unfriendly. I only use the AZ on S2 and H264 channels. Mama does use it to watch her westerns on Saturdays, that's about it. Other than that, it's a dust collecter. I hate to be so negtive on this subject but I dispise this receiver .

Jim,

I am well aware of the problems on your azbox and never discounted it but there is IMO a way to clear all of it up.
If you want Jim, you can pm me and if you want to ship the receiver to the East Coast I can most likely fix that problem you have had on your azbox. I strongly believe it has always been in your sat/channel list that you had not been able to get rid of a corruption in.
Shame to have it sitting on a shelf collecting dust. I believe there was even an offer to you at one time from the place you purchased it at to take it back if you were not satisfied but that offer was never taken up.
I also know that you tried several times and put in your best effort to try giving it a go with using some editor tools but sometimes too many cooks in a kitchen spoil the pot so to speak and when trying to give you help others jump in trying to give a helping hand but in your case that just added to some of the confusion on your part.
I also know the lists some sent you and have seen the same ones but that was not the answer to your problems due to the fact your problem I believe was set in your back up directory.
If you decide to do so Jim and I honestly felt that it was the receiver and not the sat/channel list but a real deficiency in the receiver I still have contacts with OpenSat and who knows, they may send you a new receiver if it is indeed a bad one.
I would not go out on a limb to say they would but they know my reputation and have been decent at these types of things.
for that matter if you wanted I could take it another direction but this is entirely up to you Jim. I am letting you have that opportunity to get it right once for all.
Beings that I have more then 1 of these receivers I have to honestly say that if I saw the same type of problem I would not be a happy camper either but I have not and that is not saying you got a one off that quality control missed coming off the line and should never have been put up for sale.
If you decide to take up this offer Jim I could do it at the end of April but not before. My schedule is just too tight these days and my free time will come up closer to the end of April where I could help out more.
So it is up you, mull it over and if you decide you want to send a pm and I'll try to help you out if you decide you want to ship the receiver out so one could see exactly what is going on with it.

Yes, there was an offer to take it back, no questions asked. But, I decided to buy this receiver on my own. There was no sales preasure what so ever. I made the decision to buy it, with reservations and it was the wrong decision. I am not the kind of person who holds other people responsible for my actions, good or bad. I bought this receiver, now I have to live with it.

I understood that very well and if you saw the very next line from the part you quoted me on there you would see:

Jim,

I sincerely understand your situation. I know you have worked diligently with this box and it's sad that it didn't respond well in kind. I will tell you this, the YouTube and Browser options do not function well for me either. This is not a fault of the AZBox entirely, it has a lot to do with my internet connection (via WildBlue satellite). It is too slow and I have troubles even with my PC. I tried signing up for Netflix streaming video, but even that doesn't work on my PC.

I have relinquished myself to a defeat with YouTube and Browser due to my internet access capabilities. Until I can obtain a better service here, I don't expect these options to function on the AZBox. But, this is all OK with me as they are not the reasons that I selected the AZBox in the beginning. I selected the AZBox for the wide variety of satellite options that were available and a lot to do with being able to have dual DVBS-2 tuners (in the Premium Plus).

In the beginning, I found much trouble with the satellite list. Without knowing the reasoning, I found that if I deleted all the satellites (except one) and "Americanizing" my satellite listing, that I cured the problem. Then, again without really having the knowledge of the "why", I found that by using the ACC, MaZEdit and AZEdit programs, that I could maintain my satellite list properly without all the hiccoughs from the back-up file. When I started this on my own, there were no such instructions posted anywhere to go on or to follow so "North Americanizing" the sat list followed after. Someone tried my advice and someone else found a corrupted TP/sat in the factory list. The more every AZBox owner played with it, the more clues they found and the more work-around repairs everyone discovered. I cannot say that I was the first to find any answers here, but it is certain that many of us "guinea pigs" were working (both) together and independently to strive for a better instruction set for the AZBox. Since then, it has proven to be a very good instrument for many of us.

The AZBox may be difficult to learn and it probably isn't a good box to get started with, but it certainly isn't a bad box. I have experienced many which were much worse and only a few that were better. I guess I cannot say that they were better, more appropriately I should say that they were simpler to operate and program. I am sure that you can qualify that with your QualiTV. I can qualify that with the Coolsat 5000, but the CS 5K is no AZBox by far in regards to what it can do.

Jim, I just wanted to let you know that I understand your position. Not that I agree with your total assessment, nor do I expect you to agree with mine, but all of us wish others to have a good experience with any box and no one wishes a bad experience. I have no way of improving the situation with YouTube or the browser features, but the basic satellite operation should not cause you trouble.

Stargaze has made a great offer. You might find the results very positive and rewarding if you take him up on it. He has a more encompassing satellite list than I as he also has C-Band capabilities. He can set up your AZBox to benefit you greatly. I could do the same, but would only have my little window for Ku band. Once he updates your AZBox, you will be able to add and edit your list according to the instructions in the A-Z Guide and I bet that you will develop a totally different attitude towards the AZBox.

I want you to have a good experience with the AZBox, not because I am trying to push this box, but because you are a friend. I know the AZBox is expensive and no one wants their friends to fork out big bucks and regret it.

Radar,

Well said. The Azbox (3 here) have their quirks but of the 10 or so receivers I have used seem to be the most stable of the bunch. I had alot of trouble with the Quali and don't have that issue with any of the Azboxes here. Personally I could do without the extras. In fact I haven't used them. I just use it as sat receiver and most of the time that is remotely away from the house. As for performance, the Elite and Ultra I didn't have any major issues with, the Premium+ PS gave up in less than a week but since that was replaced it has been smooth sailing.
D
The Azbox Premium Plus is a real learning curve. At the age of 50 I began to use computers. Now, I am 62. Approximately 3 years ago, I embarked upon Linux: Ubuntu. Azbox is Linux. The newer Azbox Me is reported as a receiver that is even harder to use than the Azbox Premium Plus. Obviously, I love punishment! I know that I will also embark upon it! However, I will wait until numerous members on this site, and several others have pretty well mastered the learning curve! Thanks to the members!

Thanks to Fitch Ratings ( who gives the ratings on Credit and debt, as approved by the SEC, so they have accurate numbers) we have the totals.

DIRECTV's video subscriber base is the third-largest traditional multi-channel video programming distributor (MVPD) in the U.S. with about 8.2 million subscribers at the end of 1Q26.

The last time it was reported, it was 8.8M at the end of 2Q25, so only a 600,000 loss for 3 quarters, which is a major improvement, since for many years before that, it was losing 500,000 a quarter, 2 Million a year.

It is now losing less than Dish/Sling combined, I believe the Genre Packs are helping to retain and get subscribers.

Fubo would be a non starter for me. Missing channels:
  • NBCUniversal Channels: NBC local affiliates, USA Network, Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, E!, Syfy, Telemundo, and the Golf Channel.
  • NBC Sports: Regional sports networks like NBC Sports Bay Area, Boston, California, and Philadelphia are also off the air.
  • Warner Bros. Discovery Channels: TBS, TNT, TruTV, CNN, Discovery Channel, TLC, HGTV, Food Network, and Animal Planet.
  • A&E Networks: A&E, History, Lifetime, and Vice.
  • AMC Networks: AMC, IFC, SundanceTV, and WE tv

Recently came back to DirectTV Satellite service and have two boxes, Gemini and a main HR54.

DirecTV is charging me two "TV access fees" of $10 each, but can only watch TV on the one without the server. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

First receiver should be free. It is for me.
It is for me too. Back when they merged DIRECTV via Internet and DIRECTV Stream into one service they raised the TV access fee from $7.00 to $10.00 from both streaming and satellite and they eliminated the first receiver free for new customers only. Existing customers weren't affected by the new price and the elimination of the first receiver free policy.

All of this makes me want to cancel satellite again! Customer service said we were getting billed for an old receiver but the call got cut off.

Will call back and try to get this resolved. As of now, only one TV can access satellite service. Would hope they can send another Gemini to be co-located w the main HR54.

Update: after 20 mins on phone with a non North American call center agent, they are sending a tech out. The tech support couldn't understand that the HR54 was at a different TV than the Gemini.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I feel like this was discussed in another thread, but I can't find it. I have T-Mobile and my last iPhone upgrade was in 2020. I want to get a new iPhone, but what is the best way to go about doing it? Should I order the iPhone from T-Mobile directly, or should I buy from the Apple Store? I feel like there are pros/cons to each option.

I know of no reason to buy from a cell company.

Buying from Apple gets an unlocked phone.

I have a Hopper with Sling. (Don't know exact model.) A couple nights ago, I went into the DVR screen, and noted that it was recording three programs. Yet I was able to view live TV (that was not one of the channels being recorded.) Did something change? In the past, it would only let me watch one of the channels being recorded, or any recording in the DVR menu. Maybe it was streaming, although there was no indication of that?

Apologies if this has been covered; I searched and didn't find anything.

Thanks.

So I tested.

Started recording three non-network shows and tried to watch live TV, would not do it, because all three tuners were in use.

Started recording two non-network shows and one network show. Still would not let me tune live TV.

Started recording one non-network show and two network shows, then it allowed live TV.

I would assume then that previously I was recording two or three network shows when it allowed live TV; I honestly don't remember what it was doing, and I didn't think to check.

Thanks for replies, everyone.

PS - How does one know whether a program is streaming? Is there a way to force streaming?

There is no way to force streaming. It is a satellite channel or streaming channel except for the rare occasion that the satellite signal fails. If that happens some, not all, channels will automatically change to streaming. You can tell if the channel is streaming by pressing guide on the remote. if it is a streaming channel the guide will clearly show it that way.

Cough, cough, Hopper3!

chokes hopper 3 all the way... 16 tuners vs 3 tuners is a night and day difference. along with a faster processor. i would call in and see if they would upgrade me or you can buy a hopper 3 from solid signal.

You should ask DIRECTV for one if you are affected by the dispute. I know in the past they have given them out during a dispute. Not sure if they still do that but it is free to ask.

I already asked, but the CS agent said they wouldn't do it. They said the only thing they could do is $10/month bill credit.

I did that. The response was that the LCC is not available. Escalated the issue to a tech support person with the same results. 🤬

Could be out of them I guess ... I'd keep trying, every 3-4 days.

If they are not out of them as them WHY you can't get one, seeing Your in a Dispute. Thats what they are for.
I would make them give you a real answer, don't let them off the hook.

I had one, and it worked well, but I believe I gave it to another D* friend (also had a AM21), I know I gave them away ...

According to the tech support guy, they don't have any in stock. He said I should receive an email when and if they have them. I even told him I would accept a refurbished unit. 🙄

I'm not sure your going to find any Refurbished ones as D* doesn't ask for them back.

Yeah, I know. At one point, I even had 3 AM21s but gave them away when I got rid of my last HR54 and switched to the HS17.

Good luck they haven't made them in years. you could poke around on ebay and see if there's any on there. if not why not a tablo or a zapper box with an antenna connected to it

I have my OTA antenna connected to my television directly already so watching is not the issue. The reason I want the LCC is so I could record programs if I'm not at home to watch them live, especially since ABC is carrying both the NBA and NHL playoffs.
I have an active search on eBay and there is one there but he wants $180 plus shipping and I am not going to pay that.

Did anyone have a price increase today on their equipment? I own my VIP211k's, and they have been $5.00. My bill that I received last week shows the "add-ons" as being $5.00. However, I just logged into my Dish account, and my "add-ons" are now $10.00. Did the additional receivers go up by $5.00 recently?

As I mentioned, my last bill shows $5.00 and under the notes, nothing is mentioned about a price increase.

The cable company I was with years ago did charge $9.99 for a receiver.

I went to try to add the Heartland channel as dummy to see what it would do for me as I own my receiver and have DISH Outdoors and this is what mine shows. (Note however I had to take the 2nd receiver I told you I added the other day off because I was told you can only have 1 receiver when you have a one outlet on the Dish Playmaker and was having issues with the 2nd receiver and I didn't know that and that was done yesterday as well so I am back to one receiver.)

I asked again, and the rep I talked to said it is a glitch and that "Access for TV" shouldn't be there - the rep pulled up my future month bills and that charge isn't on it. So I am not going to worry about it right now, but it will be interesting to see when the price changes happen later this year. Will this line item show up? The fact that it is a specific item that is different from anything makes me think it is more than a glitch. But we shall see.

I am hoping they don't add this down the road. Things are expensive the way it is now. Even DIRECTV allows the first receiver free. This would go against DISH and DISH is already loosing subscribers I wouldn't think they would do these kind of tricks but you never know. Always look at your bills for unknow charges. I heard horror stories of people getting charged for things they didn't know were there.

Hello everyone, new guy here. I'm trying to solve problem I'm having with Dish bonus view channels. When I'm watching the bonus view channels then I switch back to regular dish channels, after few minutes the screen flips to black and after 30 seconds flips back to regular channels and continues to flip back and forth until I turn off TV. After I wait 30 minutes and turn back on , I can use regular channels again. So, its after I switch from bonus view channels to regular dish channels the problem starts. Been trying to fix this for a month, but no luck
Here what I've done.
i contacted Dish support and they sent me a new Joey3, but no help. Switched to a different HDMI input on TV, no help. Used different HDMI cable , no help. Used different electrical wall plug, no help.
Finally got a Dish tech to check it. He ran all systems check and was OK. Finally he brought in a small TV and plugged in the HDMI out from the Joey to the small TV. He could not get the problem to occur on his small TV, so the new Joey was working OK. So, then the problem must be myTV. He made some phone calls and came back with the answer that there must be a problem with the analog to digital switch in my TV. Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this, or is it time to be looking for a new TV? My tv LG OLED65C8PUA. TV has been trouble free til now. Thanks

First off, great TV. I'm torn between the 77C5 or the 77G5.
It sounds like the handshake between the Receiver and the TV is having a problem. Are you using the free cable that came with the Joey or a higher speed HDMI cable?? That's the f irst place I'd look

First off, The analog to digital switch, also known as the digital television transition, is the process of converting older analog television broadcasting technology to digital broadcasting. It's used through coaxial cable for the an antenna during the mandatory switch from Analog to Digital on June 12, 2009. You either had to get a converter for your analog (Tube TV) or use a converter box that has the analog or digital tuner or an HDTV which your is and has the tuner built in. Your TV is HD and using an HDMI Cable and nothing is connected by coaxial cable so this wouldn't apply.

In my theory it probably means a new TV. I had a TV go out on my switching between the Smart Screen from the HDMI inputs before because they went faulty. Sometimes electrical surges can cause this. If you have an older home or rent an older home or apartment sometimes the electrical outlets are not grounded and these days HDTV's need a ground which can cause them to malfunction and go bad quicker. Never plug it directly in an outlet. It will damage the TV.

Hope I could be of some assistance.

Thank you for the information. I do keep the TV plugged into a surge protector, but we have had pretty strong thunderstorms/lightning in the last month so that have contributed to my problem. The house was built in 2009 so everything seems to be grounded correctly. We have had a power surge also. Seems like no one fixes anything any more, so just get a new one or live with the problem. Thanks

I think the HDMI cable is good, i used one of my own from my 4K atmos system, i'll switch it with another just to check. Also I have a bid in at Greentoe for 77" G5. Thanks

I've had this problem with my older Sony TV. It happens when I just punch in a regular channel number. The only way it works right for me is to push guide and select a regular channel from the guide screen.

I prefer the trailer for the movie adaptation of Mario Kart. At least that had Pedro Pascal in it.

"A new line of unsullied kings" would seem impossible given the GoT definition of "unsullied". :biggrin
