Our household has just went from one HDTV in the family room to HDTVs in all rooms thanks to a bunch of Black Friday TV deals. We are currently with E* with an older 722 box that will no longer be sufficient for our family. We want a more robust solution with the DVR being accessible by everyone in the family. We have looked at the Hopper and it would probably work for us but we think the Genie will be better for our needs. The 5 independent tuners with the Genie would probably work better for us than the Hopper 3 tuners and PrimeTimeAnyTime.

Here are my questions on the Genie.

1) If I'm correct, you can only watch 4 independent channels at once, with the 5th tuner being reserved for recordings. Is this correct?

2) I hope I phrase this question in an understandable manner.

If I have the Genie box and 4 additional C31's, are the tuners tied to a specific box? e.g. tuner 1 is the main TV, tuner 2 is the bedroom, tuner 3 is the kitchen, etc. Or are the tuners independently allocated on an as need basis and tuner numbers don't work in that way? So if I'm recording two shows, is it set to tuner 1 and tuner 2 and those TVs/client boxes tied up where we can't watch something else on them, since their tuners are in use?

For example my E* 722 box has two tuners but there is a distinct tuner 1 on the main TV and a distinct tuner 2 for our other TVs. If you have a recording set to tuner 2, then you can't "check out" tuner 1 and that TV/feed is essentially tied up for the recording. It's a real hassle for us.

I know that might not have made sense above but hopefully someone will get it to some degree.

3) This may help clarify question #2. Are recordings assigned to a specific tuner?

4) Are the remotes for the Genie or C31's IR or RF? I'd like to "hide" the C31's if the remotes are RF based.

My install questions:

1) I have RG-6 going to main TV (where the Genie would be). Can RG-59 be used to feed the C31 boxes from the central node (assuming there is a central node/hub)? My house has a lot of RG-59 wiring feeding most of the smaller TV's in our house. Rewiring most of these TV's would be very costly as a lot of the cabling is on the outside walls on a slab/full brick house.

2) I'm in the Charleston, SC area. Can anyone tell me which satellite locations I'll need to be able to see? I've had an issue with one of E*'s satellite locations and I want to make sure not to waste anyone's time if we can't see the appropriate birds.

3) I really hate having a roof mounted dish. Is D* willing to mount to one of our deck post (4x4) that is secured in concrete?

4) Does D* remove a competitor's dish as part of the install?

5) Is there a place where I can easily compare D*'s various packages, perhaps in a PDF format? I can view this somewhat on their main page but the icons are large and it's impossible to see all of the channels listed on one page, making it hard to keep track of the differences.

I think that's it for now.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. I think all of my questions were definitely answered. The Genie and C31's sounds like the way for us to go. The only real issue that remains is the RG-59 wiring feeding the C31's.

I found a PDF version of the D* channel listings broken down by package right in the stickies here at SatGuys!

Also, online it says we will receive the "DIRECTV CINEMA™ Connection Kit". I know this is used for VOD but is it actually required for anything else pertaining to whole home DVR setup? Also, would we get a wireless version by default? We don't have hard wired ethernet where the Genie will be located.

skysurfer,

I like the boxes, especially the Genie. The issue is that in a couple of rooms our TV's are wall mounted and it would be nice if I didn't have to have a stand for the C31 on those TVs. If I can hide the C31 behind the TV and buy a RF remote, that would be good.

Caseyf57,

We are going to get a fourth C31 and pay the subsidized extra equipment cost. We shouldn't have an issue with needing to use more than three C31's at once. So this shouldn't be an issue. We just want the extra C31 client for an extra room.

Also, I think we might need the 5 LNB setup as we want to receive some of the Spanish programming available in the English package we are getting. According to the information I read, a couple of the Spanish channels are on 119.

Thanks!

I think you probably have to have your receiver hooked up to the internet - it's my understanding that in addition to VOD, they also do location checks using the internet (whereas old school was phone line) and I bet when I schedule a recording with my ipod touch 4G directv app, it sends my request to the HR34 via the internet connection instead of some satellite datastream at the 101 slot.

i don't know if the C31 can work with an RF remote (both my remotes are IR) so who knows if you can tuck the C31 away instead of having it line of sight. If it were me, I'd homebrew a bracket and attach it to the tv wallmount that would give me a small shelf right below the wallmounted tv to hold the lightweight C31 but then again I don't have any sensitive wife or gf that might complain that it looks ugly to have the C31 in view. I'm definitely a function over form type of guy!

As far as the Directv Cinema no its only for On demand. Your Whole home is ran through Coax , The Swim system does all that. But if you get the cinema connection kit, nothing has to be hard wired except for the DECA Broadband adapter. That feeds the internet thought the coax. None of the C31,s or the HR 34 need a direct internet connection. the HR24's don't either.

Another option too if your worried about tuners for room 5, you can add, for a fee of course, H25, ($99) it would only use a tuner off the HR34 if you decide to record or watch a recorded show. But you can watch live tv without any interruption to your other 4 rooms.

That's interesting if I understand it correctly. I have to pay extra for a fourth C31, so it probably makes better sense to pay more to get an actual receiver than a client. If I get the HD receiver (non-DVR), can I access all of the DVR recordings, delete recordings and set up recordings for the Genie? Also, the tuner will be independent, essentially giving me a 6th "live" tuner, unless I wanted to record? The HD receiver doesn't say which model it is but does say "WH", which I assume is Whole House. If it can't access and control the Genie then the extra tuner isn't as functional for us.

This very well could be true!

I would not turn down the Internet connection kit anyway. Its free and they install it.

I don't want to turn it down but I'm concerned about getting it wired into my network. Where my router is located, I cannot easily get a coax connection to it, except the pesky RG-59 wiring that will be feeding a C31. I see that they have a wireless CCK and if that is provided, then I'm ready to go on it.

They will more then likly give you H25. But H24 are fine too. It will be installed into your Whole Home system. And Yes it would be 6 Tuners.
You can set to record from the H25- the Hr34, And playback on H25

But remember the HR34 will only Stream 3 remote rooms max. So if all 3 other Client rooms are in use , you will only be able to wach Live TV on the H25, you will not be able record off the H25 untill one of the clients is not in use.
But thats better then a 4th Client that won't allow you to do anything.

OP, if you're getting an HR34 "Genie" - you don't need a CCK if your router is near the HR34 receiver. Just connect an Ethernet cable from your router to the back of the HR34 and you're all set. This is much more simplified and rids of the clutter involved with the CCK.....not to mention that those things gets very hot.

I've had a direct Ethernet connection to my HR34 for over a month now and I have access to On-Demand, Youtube, Pandora and other internet apps/features. Just an FYI.

The C31s work great with the RF remotes. I have 2 of them working with RC65RX remotes, both in RF mode. Apparently the C31s have a built in RF remote antenna, as there isn't a connection for an antenna on it.

HR 34 has a Built in DECA, you don't need to connect it to a router.

Your DECA Broadband adapter, that comes free with your connection kit, gets Hooked to your router, Via Ethernet, and sends internet access through Coax to all your networked Receivers.

Much easier (and less clutter) in my case to hook up the Ethernet directly to the back of the HR34 instead of using an adapter. Why add another box/unit/adapter to your set-up when you can just run a single Ethernet cable to the receiver itself and eliminate the "middle man."

Now if your router is not close to the HR34 - then I completely understand your method, which would be preferred in this case.

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

That would pinpoint it to the H3 that is the problem. Are both H3's on the same software version now and before? Did the system check actually do the full EHD test like the one below?

Thanks JohnGalt1234 - That's interesting. I wonder are the Boot Strap versions different between a Hopper 3 only and a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup as I have the later. I guess when charlesrshell is able to since he has both setups, he can do the test. Unless the bootstrap version is tied to when the specific Hopper 3 is manufactured, in my case, mines is from February 2016 when it was installed.

At least Google Search AI is saying the bootstrap version will never change and unique to each Hopper 3.

This is probably why different people seem to either have the issue or they don't because the bootstrap code could also be tied to the hardware revision and
components other than the internal HD.

Two bugs out and three new bugs in.🐞
Almighty1
Updated to H713 on a Hopper 3 from H712 with Hopper Plus a few hours earlier.

It brought a old problem back:

One of the problems I am seeing is that the Available Joey Software section no longer is showing the Android TV versions even after a manual software reset twice and the nightly reboot. Until it does, nether Technician Android TV download and Hopper Plus is able to check, download and update the Android TV software.

This was a major problem with H703.

H710 removed that dependency but it's broken again.

Try going exclusively to an IR remote and you will see the pain

Within the last few hours as I did check earlier today when it was still missing, the Available Joey Software line now has added "P154 P15403" which is for the Hopper Plus that I have but my Hopper Plus software is still on P15317, I will do a Download Android TV (ATV) Software for the Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey which are all Android TV devices and then manually do a check update on the Hopper Plus to update the software shortly.

This happened to me. I was outside mowing and my wife came out and said that our nieces and nephews were going to be on the Noon News. She had it on in the bedroom on our Joey3. Since they weren't on yet, I decided to turn it on in the Living Room on our Hopper3. When I selected the channel (through Dish, not OTA) the Joey3 turned itself off. When I went back to the bedroom to turn it back on, the Hopper3 did a reboot. Luckily it all finished before their story came on, but I just found it strange.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

I called customer service to get an answer, and they said nothing like that exists. Should I add the offer or not? Already paying them too much, but want to take advantage of something free.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Just got home from the grocery store I will bring in the groceries and then take a look at what NGINX failed the first time.

Ok checked it out and for some reason the web server (NGINX) tried starting before the DNS resolver fully loaded. This is why it worked when I rebooted the machine.

Thanks to ChatGPT it had me change the NGINX config to prevent this from happening again.

With that said I can't prevent the ISP from doing emergency upgrades which was the cause of all of this.

As I was testing 4K on my Hopper 3 running H713 10/7/2026 by watching the NLCS Game 2 on Channel 148-01, I had been using my Dish 52.0 remote to navigate. I grabbed my Harmony One and pressed "Info". This caused the Hopper 3 to crash and restart.

After it restarted, the game finished so I pressed "Options" on the 52.0 remote to access the TV Activity screen. I pressed Select on the tuner with the NLCS game active and arrowed-down to select "Stop Recording". Again, the Hopper 3 crashed and restarted.

After it came back up, I used Recall to return to "Maine Cabin Masters" and when I tried the Options button again, I saw that the NLCS Game was still being recorded. I selected the game, arrowed-down to Stop recording, and this time it stopped recording and didn't crash.

Since I was watching an HD program instead of 4K, I tried the "Info" button and nothing happened. The Harmony One has an IR active indicator when it's transmitting so I know I pressed the button.

It looks like the 2nd or 3rd time I sent "Info" from the Harmony One, the Hopper 3 started to respond again. If I used the Dish 52.0 remote, the Hopper 3 stopped listening to the Harmony One IR commands. It looks like "Info" needs to be pressed twice and that seems to reactivate the IR recognition on the Hopper 3. It seems to stay active, but I didn't try leaving the Hopper 3 alone for an hour or more.

I think you have it. If you start up with the Harmony and then use the 54 remote it confuses the Hopper because you went from IR to RF. It seems to get cranky when you want to go back to the Harmony.

I checked this and you are correct. My Harmony 665 remote worked fine until my wife used the Dish remote. After the Dish remote is used I have to push or hold a button down until the 665 starts working again.

I lost IR control of my H3 after the H398 update in September of 25. We were using the Harmony Hub remote system from Logitech. We have been using the H3 OEM remote to turn the receiver on and off ever since then.

H398 Software Version
BTW my bedroom H3 does not have this problem where I am using a Harmony 650. Also has there been any more feedback? Are they still working on this or what?

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won:)

Excellent suggestion.
Yea, I've only been a CIO for the last 30 years! :)
Trust me, when something important breaks, they get to own it!

Continuing the Kilauea thread in the Pub here. Perhaps the Iceland one too next time there's remarkable activity.

Currently there is precursory lava flowing into the crater, leading to the next episode that'll probably start within the next day.

You can see the pace of inflation / deflation here. It serves as the primary predictor for when the expect the eruptions, which coincide w/ inflation turning into significant deflation and last for several hours on average with significant fountaining.

Wife and I like the AfarTV feeds, for the discussion along w/ them, though they're otherwise just mirrors of the official USGS feeds.

Oooo, quite the show now. All three vents have doming and overflows. The cone that built up around the North vent lost its upper quarter at 02:50 Oct 17 and is now spewing lava at a healthy rate. Don't know if I would say it's a fountain, but it's close.

edit: The USGS has called the official start of Episode 55 as starting at 03:19 HST Oct 17, 2026:

Alert Level: WATCH, Color Code: ORANGE 2026-10-17 13:43:56 UTC
HVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice

Volcano: Kilauea (VNUM #332010)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Issued: Saturday, October 17, 2026, 3:43 AM HST
Source: Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
Notice Number: 2026/H488
Location: N 19 deg 25 min W 155 deg 17 min
Elevation: 4091 ft (1247 m)
Area: Hawaii

Summary: Episode 55 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 3:19 AM HST on October 17, 2026.

Volcanic Activity:
Episode 55 of lava fountaining in Halemaʻumaʻu began at the summit of Kīlauea began at 3:19 AM HST on October 17, 2026.

Fountain heights are relatively low at about 100-150 feet (30-45 m), and it is not clear whether this episode will evolve to the same heights as previous episodes. Continuous overflows from the vents began yesterday, October 16, just before 6 a.m. HST and transitioned into episode 55 fountains at 3:19 a.m. HST this morning. The current forecast is for winds are blowing from the north-northeast direction, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material may be distributed to the south-southwest direction from Halemaʻumaʻu.
  • All eruptive vents and lava flows are confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Tephra fall from volcanic ash clouds is greatest within 3 miles (5 km) of the vents, lighter ash and Pele's Hair may stay suspended for large distances from the vents.

Kīlauea seems to be returning to the "normal" eruption script, impressive fountaining from the North Vent. For once, the V2 Cam has the best overall shot:

The lava flows have covered a good portion of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor.

Looks like Episode 55 is over at 09:00 HST, just under six hours. The USGS said the fountains reached 720' or 220 meters.
