I installed a 12' Unimesh dish on an AJAK 180 H-H mount a few months back and am looking for some suggestions on a positioner unit.

I already owned and have tried a G-Box and a V-Box on this behemoth, neither seems to have the cajones required to swing it. Both of those devices will take the dish about 20-25 degrees either way from apex and slowly bring it back, but I need to be able go around 50 degrees to the east and west from my 93 degree true south location.

I had never had any issues driving a BUD with a G or V-Box in the past, but had never tried using them on a 12' dish before. At first I thought I may have internal issues with the AJAK, but I knew it was well cleaned and lubed, and that it had run fine on my bench with no load. And I had the -Boxes close-hooked to the motor on about 6' of 16 ga. wire so didn't think that was the issue.

I came real close to pulling the dish off the mount and removing the mount for troubleshooting when I remembered I had an old MTI 2800 positioner box. I hooked it up and voila, was able to run the dish from limit to limit (AJAK internal limit switches)...a little slow bringing it up from the extremes, but it will do it. I would just use the MTI but it has no remote, and the display is out of it, would like to have both of those items in whatever I can come up with.

I believe my 3 choices are:

1.) Old-school standalone positioner box? I would not mind using one of these, just tune to a hot tp and watch my meter for peaking, but would like it to have a remote control, and some sort of display...ideas?

2.) Analog receiver? I still use a Toshiba 1820 to drive my first BUD (installed in 1993) and it has been bulletproof, great unit. Pretty sure I could drive tent stakes with it and not hurt it.

I have a spare 1820 but the problem with this model Toshiba (AFAIK) is you need an analog signal on each sat that you want to save a position for, once a signal is locked the receiver then goes through an autopeak and autoskew routine, and then it saves the position. It also only will display one letter and one number for the position (G5, W2, T4, etc.), it does not have a numerical readout that can be correlated to a position. The 1 letter/1 number display is not a deal-breaker though.

I have no experience with any other analog receivers, is there an analog unit that you can use like a G-Box...that is, move it from sat to sat, use a digital receiver to peak the signal, and then save the sat position in the analog receiver? And preferably with a numerical readout to visually see the position and dish movement?

3.) 4DTV receiver? I know nothing of the Motorola 920 & 922's but I have read on the forum about them. It sounds like with the new maps you are able to have quite a selection of sat locations, but I don't know what they all are, or how much the user can define them, if any. I would like to be able to have all locations from around 40W to 139W, if possible. I do not need the unit to be authorizable, but it would need to be capable of receiving the new maps (tiles?).

Also, I do not need to be able to control a servo, I am using a SatAv C2 right now, and may go C-band ortho in the future.

Does anyone know of anyone with a 12' Unimesh on an AJAK 180 that is running with a G or V-Box? I suppose I could have issues with my mount but since the MTI runs it ok I really think the little China-boxes just can't push enough juice to run this big boy.

Any ideas, thoughts and/or suggestions are welcomed.

I'd want the current draw, when moving the dish off of either end, to be close to or under 3 amps. Even IRD's BITD had somewhere from 3 to 4 amp breakers on the motor. With that monster BUD think the counter-balance is a good addition. Lower current draw = longer motor(brush) life.
[My VonWeise actuator still only draws 2 amps moving away from the end and under an amp thru the middle.]

I've got a couple of the Ajaks on a 3m Pinnacle and a 1.8m solid Prodelin offset. The latter is quite heavy and my GBOX works to raise it from the horizon. The Pinnacle is trivial by comparison.

I had to completely refurb the Prodelin Ajak because the one I picked up was frozen in solid rust. Along the way I discovered its half-moon gear was slightly out-of-round. I could run the dish to the ground on the east side and roll it back up, but if I went more than 10-20 degrees west, the GBOX didn't have enough current to move it back on its own. This was after everything was disassembled, cleaned and lubed. There are some adjustments and shims on the Ajak that can help deal with this, but ultimately I had to loosen the worm gear mating with the half-moon. This causes a small amount of backlash, but now driving up from either the east or west works fine.

I will try to check the amperage the next time I go out and hook it up. The only inductive ammeter I have will only measure AC amperage, guess I will have to get inline.

Looking at adding a counterbalance, wondering if the force it exerts will distort the mount or reflector any.

I also have a 6' Prodelin (copied your mounting system) on an AJAK and it works well.

Will definitely do a complete teardown if I ever pull it down, but I know I can drive it with a robust positioner so will most likely just take the easy way out for now.

I wouldn't think you'd need much weight as it's a distance from the pivot. Greater than the distance of the dish-pivot. Also don't think you have to 'balance' 100% of the dish weight, but only a fraction. 30-50%?? If distortion of the ring appears, some kind of support to the opposite side of the ring?? Don't think hanging anything off the dish itself would be recommended.

But.....if you like Tulsa King....looks like you would probably like this as well. I don't mind spin-offs as long as they don't involve a sassy niece who moves from the big city

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

I'm not a big fan of the new layout, especially on my Apple TV. It used to look like the old Guide layout on the Hopper 3, but they changed parts of that, too.

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

Might be worth a watch when it comes out. Looks like typical big corp against the little guy movie BUT....there is a reason this plot type is so oft repeated, it draws audiences.

BTW, I noticed right after I posted this that someone else had already mentioned it....sorry for the duplicate thread. Still looking forward to seeing the movie.

If you're going try to read / listen to the book (can't recommend the audio book enough) before this comes out, I'd avoid trailers.

Trailer below, spoiling it to make sure you read the above bold message first. The book / audio book are fantastic. Go into this blind if you can IMO!

Kind of disappointed at how much they show. A lot still to see, but man, some good reveals in the book that are just served up here.

I've seen it twice. Can't recommend the audio book enough, Ray Porter's performance is amazing and there's so much more in the book than the movie.

Forgot to comment. I did watch when it first came out on MGM. I enjoyed it a lot. I think reading the book made it easier to watch. Several friends commented it was a little hard to follow.

I agree. That can go for pretty much any book vs movie. Back when I was single I would read any Stephen King or John Grisham book I could get my hands on. When you read a book you make up the scenes and characters in your mind.....the movie version always disappoints.

A big win for the Patriots, and they are now 3-2.

Browns lose a close one with... The Jets. That is a classic Browns loss (granted, any loss is a classic one it seems). 49'ers, Vikings, and Chiefs remain undefeated. The AFC north have a three way tie at 3-2 for second place.

I had quit watching this show years ago because I ended up more annoyed than entertained. Well......I'm STILL more annoyed than entertained. I DO find it interesting to see how things work behind the scenes at many businesses. What annoys me is how utterly out of touch CEOs are with the companies they run. At the end of almost every episode the head of the company is amazed at how hard the employees have to work and many times have to work around impossible guidelines set forth from headquarters.

I found this one interesting because the new CEO had big plans for this company, Muscle Maker Grill, and it looked like the stores were all pretty busy. Recent history hasn't been good to this company however. I bet the covid lockdowns were the real killer.
