Well, I signed up with Voom and it was installed on 03/24/05, and I knew that the future of Voom was in jeopardy. After enjoying a little over a month with Voom, and with Voom shutting down service, I went back to Comcast on 04/27/05. Here are my personal opinions of Voom:

HIGHS (Pointing out the best features of Voom)

(1) Quality - Although Comcast HD, and Dish Network HD is the only HD I can compare it to (I never had DirecTV HD), I would say that Voom was #1 in HD quality. I am sure it is because they were built from the ground up as being an HD service, and they cared about quality. Even their guide and menu options were in HD.

(2) Pricing - Voom again is #1 as far as comparitive pricing. If you were to subscribe to any other provider and get all the premium movie channels(HBO, Showtime, TMC, Stars, etc) you would be paying more than you would for Voom's Va Va Voom package for ~$89.95/month.

(3) Charles Dolan - You have to give this guy credit for coming up with the idea of an satellite service designed to be HD from the ground up. You also should appreciate the money he spent of his own to try to save Voom when it was in trouble, and even going against his son and getting rid of board members that opposed him. Voom was his baby, and he worked hard trying to save it. Unfortunately, it was too little too late in the end. My hat's off to you Charles. :)

LOWS (Pointing out things that needed more work)

(1) Voom21 Variety - While Voom21 is a great package and great channels, the think I disliked was the lack of variety on those channels. I don't know how frequently I checked the guide and saw the same things playing over and over on some of the channels, such as Flipper, Thunderbirds, etc. Not that the programs themselves were bad, they should have had a larger variety.

(2) Lack of SD channels - While Voom continued to add SD channels to the end, they did have quite a bit less SD channels than the other provider. This is a good and bad thing. Good, because other providers have alot of SD channels that really should not be on a channel, and bad, because the channels that most people wanted, they really didn't add till the end.

(3) Marketing - I think this was part of Voom's demise, was lack of marketing. As has been brought up before, Voom was only sold locally in Sears stores. When you go to buy great quality HD equipment, would Sears be on the top of your list of stores to buy it from? NO! They should have also sold in Home Theater stores, Best Buys, Circuit City's, Fry's......but any place but Sears. To really compare the quality, people should be able to walk into a store and view the quality, and Sears would not have the higher quality televisions to really show off Voom in all it's glory.

(4) Channel Structure - This has also been brought up, and this could be a good and bad thing. Voom only had two different packages, Voom (~$40)and Va Va Voom (~$90), while competitors has at least 3 packages you could choose from. Voom should have offered more packages and offered more variety and a la carte items. If I remember correctly, PlayboyHD was the only thing offered. Voom should have possibly offered a middle package priced at about $60.

(5) DVR & Archiving - although plans were made to have one, it never ended up being a reality. This would have been a great way for people to archive missed shows to record and watch for later. On another note that I will add on here, it would have been good to have a firewire port that was active on the box, to archive to a computer for later. This would have been great demo material for later, and, as of now, something to remember Voom by, but there was not a cheap way to record and save Voom programming.

I think I have mentioned the most important things. Don't get me wrong, I will very greatly miss Voom and the quality and pricing of it's service. It's a shame they are going out of business, and now Dish Network and DirecTV have no quality satellite competition, so they will probably not work as hard as they should if Voom had stayed in business and pulled customer away from them. I think most people are going to cable because of the inexpensive DVR options that matter to alot of people.

Voom, we love you and will miss you. Thanks for the memories, and the quality time we shared together. Hopefully, your programming will stay with us in some form or fashion. :(

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Yeah. It's probably something going on with the MacBook as my iPhone has been pretty snappy.

I rebooted my MacBook Air and it's zipping right along. Sorry, but it was taking over 20 seconds to load pages, with the pulsing blue bars so it was munching on something.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Well, I helped him set up a gmail acct....I actually wanted to see what the new process is for setting up a gmail acct since it had been years since I set mine up. Anyway, I showed him how to forward the emails he wanted to keep over.

Can't help but wonder if a worker overlooked checking the harness. I rarely ride a roller coaster anymore but when I do I check the harness myself pretty aggressively.
Can't imagine what the son is going through.

Back on the Goliath Roller Coaster ... I'm interested to find more details as well ...
Like where on the track did this happen (somewhere I read that it was on the climb up the top), which is impossible ...

They really need to take that ride and add at the very least, seatbelts ...

The Park is opening back up on Friday, the ride will Not be opening ... personally, I would keep it closed until different type of restraints can be designed and installed (over the winter).

I find it hard to believe that this ride is even allowed to be running with the restraints that exist at the moment, there are other rides that use the same type and they have been shut down across the country.

You got to believe that every ride has at least 2 types of restraint systems in place.

I wonder what and when we will hear from the Manufacturer ... and whatever governing bodies control these ...

Just think, this is a Major Amusement Park .... I would not have any problem getting on the Roller Coasters I have rode ...

Imagine what these County Fairs and others like them, I would not be caught Dead on one of them ... they get put up and tore down every other week, where is the safety for those rides ... No Thank You.

Yet IF you were on one, you might be caught dead.

Had no idea there were that many redundancies built into those restraints.

It makes sense, however, I would want more types of restraints, so if one doesn't work, the other does ... the restraints coming over the shoulder I would have expected ... with a Seat belt as last resort.

Fwiw, I inquired with what they use on Coasters at Cedar Point, various Coasters, different restraints according to what the car and track requires ...

NONE of the Coasters at CP use THAT particular system :)
I'm glad to see ...

According to the article, when you see a seat belt on a ride like this, it is basically used as a way of making sure the rider isn't too large/fat to safely ride the ride.

I just received 6 receiver 2 port mini Multiswitch and it work great, no external power need it, and you can connect 6 receiver instead of 4 on most Mini Multiswitches... If anyone is interested in where they can get one PM me....

Have you tested using external power? Over the years, have found unpowered polarity switching to be unreliable. Especially problematic when used with DiSEqC motors or switch stacking.
H
No I have not. I just got it the other day and it is connected to six receivers working just fine. What I do is non power mini multi-switches work best with LNBF's and with LNB's
