I used to have directv and when I turned on my TV and Directv box, my stereo receiver would detect that it was turned on and would come on automatically. When I turned off the TV and Directv box, my stereo receiver detected it and would power itself down as well. Now that I have the Hopper, my stereo receiver comes on when I turn the Hopper on, just like it did with Directv, but when I turn it off, there is a screensaver and obviously still some activity in the Hopper which prevents my stereo receiver from automatically shutting itself off like it did before. Is there a way to disable the screensaver so that it shuts down the Hopper completely? It was nice when my receiver shut itself down and only required one remote. It is not that big of a deal for me, less convenient, but my boyfriend is very technologically illiterate and will likely leave the receiver on all the time, which I do not want. I suppose I could get a Harmony remote, but that costs money and I would like to look for a free solution first. Any suggestions?

Looks like I can telnet to my AVR to tell it to power off... will set that up as a cron job to run ever night. crude.. but seemingly the only choice I have.
Seriously? Why not just use the AVR's remote, or use the Dish remote's AUX device function to power it off? Sure, it's a little more work than one-button off for everything. But, it's certainly better than what you are contemplating.

you obviously only have geeks in your house... I have kids, wife, and grandparents that never seem to turn off the AVR... in a perfect world, the power save feature on the AVR would kick in after 30 minutes.. but the @#%#$^#^ screensaver prevents that from happening... so this very crude solution is the best way I have to at least keep the darn thing off for half the day.

Actually, it's not the screensaver, as has been pointed out earlier.

Have you checked the HDMI-CEC settings to make sure they are turned on in all of the devices?

Why do you say its not the screensaver ? No where did I say I was trying to use HDMI-CEC (I've already seen that it doesn't work)

My approach is that my AVR is configured to turn itself off once inputs are idle for 30 minutes. The fact that Joey never stops sending active video (even when "off") prevents this from working.

I misunderstood. I thought you said it previously shut down IMMEDIATELY after shutting down the DirecTV receiver. If it was a 30-minute no-signal shutdown, that's a horse of a different color.

Have you tried enabling HDMI-CEC in the TV and AVR? This might initiate a shutdown in the AVR when the TV is shutdown.

I've had very poor luck with HDMI-CEC... In our main viewing space (the one I've been trying to solve), it never seems to do anything... ie. I can enable HDMI-CEC on TV + AVR + WJ and nothing seems to turn on/off the other.

In our bonus room, turning off the TV *will* turn off the AVR.. but doesn't work for turning on... that;s the only place I ever see HDMI-CEC work.

I'm willing to blame Denon, and/or since each manuf has their own name for it, maybe they just don't inter-operate very well. And conversely when I turn the AVR on to listen to Pandora, I am just as happy that it doesn't turn the TV on :)

Given that, I was hoping to use the 30-minute power-save-off feature.. but that seems to get foiled by the always-on-video from the WJ (or so I assume). So rather than have it go hours or days being left on, I figure I can schedule a ~midnight cron job to telnet in and turn the Denon off (but I gotsta-go-learn-me some "expect" scripting it appears).

Looks somebody has a Harmony in his future.

Looks somebody has a Harmony in his future.

I've got several smart/universal remotes... maybe not top of the line.. but I find most "smart" remotes try to outthink me... and heaven forbid you don't point the Harmony exactly right and miss powering on 1 item.. then you have to dig thru 4 layers of menus to get to the power button for the AVR... that failed the WAF *very* quickly.

I went back last night and made sure HMDI-CEC was enabled on the Joey and AVR, and the LG TV has Simplink (which only claims to control other LG devices)... not a single one would control any other one. Total waste of a protocol.
BBCInc
Checked mine last night. With HDMI-CEC on in settings both the TV and Hopper turn on with a single press of the SAT button. For turn off a single press of the red TV power button turns off the TV immediately and the Hopper after a 5 minute delay. At one time it was speculated that the delay was supposed to allow for a mistaken press of the TV power button to not affect the program buffers. Don't know what additional steps are needed to ensure preserving the buffers during the 5 minute countdown, though, will have to experiment.

I can point my Harmony at the ceiling and it will turn on my TV, Hopper, Roku, Bluray Player, and AVR. If, by chance, it misses one of them all I have to do is press HELP and it will either turn on, or off, what it missed or it will lead me to what needs to happen by asking questions. There is absolutely no need to go through four layers of menus to get to a power button. I have two Harmony remotes for two different viewing areas. My wife, and I, have no difficulty using them at all....

My Harmony remotes have a "help" button, which doesn't require digging through any layers. I have also taught the wife to hold the remote pointed in the general direction of the gear until everything is off or on. If she occasionally messes up, which she does, that's her deal.

But, it sounds like every possible workaround/solution while you are using Dish is too much trouble for you. So, perhaps you should switch back to DirecTV. They usually have "please come back, we missed you" deals to lure folks like you back.

Perhaps you should go back to reading thoroughly and stop making assumptions about "folks like (me)" I never said DirectTV was any better at anything (I have many posts saying quite the opposite). I was simply asking that Dish allow the user to disable the always-on video, presumably in a power-saving menu setting.

For my part, I obviously need to read the manual more thoroughly for my Harmony 550.. as it does have a "help" button, but never did it occur to me that was what it would be for.. and if one doesn't know that.. then yes, one does have to make several keypresses to get to the point of being able to find the power control for a given device (at least you do on the Harmony 550)
Z
FYI.. for the geeks in the house... and if you have a Denon (and/or possibly anything else like Marantz owned by the same corp).. take a look at http://www.openremote.org/display/docs/OpenRemote+2.0+How+To+-+Denon+HTTP+Control

ie.
Code:
curl "http:/your.avr.ip/MainZone/index.put.asp?cmd0=PutZone_OnOff%2FOFF&cmd1=aspMainZone_WebUpdateStatus%2F"

Just tested this and it worked... definitely an imperfect solution, but also a solid backup to slap it on a cron job to run late each evening to catch the days when the AVR doesn't get properly powered off.[/code]

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Well, I helped him set up a gmail acct....I actually wanted to see what the new process is for setting up a gmail acct since it had been years since I set mine up. Anyway, I showed him how to forward the emails he wanted to keep over.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Have you tested using external power? Over the years, have found unpowered polarity switching to be unreliable. Especially problematic when used with DiSEqC motors or switch stacking.
H
No I have not. I just got it the other day and it is connected to six receivers working just fine. What I do is non power mini multi-switches work best with LNBF's and with LNB's
H
It also has a IPS and a OPS switch on the side of it with a power led light showing when is on. It seems to be very nice build switch

Back on the Goliath Roller Coaster ... I'm interested to find more details as well ...
Like where on the track did this happen (somewhere I read that it was on the climb up the top), which is impossible ...

They really need to take that ride and add at the very least, seatbelts ...

The Park is opening back up on Friday, the ride will Not be opening ... personally, I would keep it closed until different type of restraints can be designed and installed (over the winter).

I find it hard to believe that this ride is even allowed to be running with the restraints that exist at the moment, there are other rides that use the same type and they have been shut down across the country.

You got to believe that every ride has at least 2 types of restraint systems in place.

I wonder what and when we will hear from the Manufacturer ... and whatever governing bodies control these ...

Just think, this is a Major Amusement Park .... I would not have any problem getting on the Roller Coasters I have rode ...

Imagine what these County Fairs and others like them, I would not be caught Dead on one of them ... they get put up and tore down every other week, where is the safety for those rides ... No Thank You.

Had no idea there were that many redundancies built into those restraints.
It makes sense, however, I would want more types of restraints, so if one doesn't work, the other does ... the restraints coming over the shoulder I would have expected ... with a Seat belt as last resort.

Fwiw, I inquired with what they use on Coasters at Cedar Point, various Coasters, different restraints according to what the car and track requires ...

NONE of the Coasters at CP use THAT particular system :)
I'm glad to see ...

with a Seat belt as last resort.
According to the article, when you see a seat belt on a ride like this, it is basically used as a way of making sure the rider isn't too large/fat to safely ride the ride.
