Hello,

I have 6 DVR's. Some are HR24/100's and some are HR/500's. For the past few days I have been getting Error 771 Signal Loss on Satellite 2 on all 6 of the receivers.

They are not going out at the exact same time. One may go out for a minute or so the others working and vice versa. As you can tell this is driving me nuts.

Nothing at all has changed concerning the setup in over a year. 13 months ago DTV came out and installed two new DVR's and at that time they had to install a new dish.

There are no obstructions to the dish. I have done a hard reset on all receivers. I have unplugged the small grey box that provides power to the dish. So far nothing has helped. I did run a test on two of the receivers and it said I need a dish alignment. (Maybe that is all that is wrong). I am not sure, but I think that when it goes out I can switch to a non hd channel and it will work. This does lead me to believe that it may be the dish is out of alignment. We had major winds a few weeks ago.

I ran a signal test and this is what it showed. Any ideas??? Please help!

I don't like getting the shaft. I have the protection plan so it didn't cost me anything extra. I am in Georgia so it doesn't get that cold here. It has happened when it was 20 degrees or like last night when it was 50 degrees.

When it happens it happens on all of the receivers but not all at the "exact" same time. For example the den may go out for 5 or 10 seconds and then a few minutes later the office may go out. I don't honestly know if any of them have ever gone out at the exact same time. It seems to happen on all of the channels. Last night I had the receiver in the kitchen on and it went out for a few seconds. I had it on TV Land (304). When it came back Family Fued with Steve Harvey was on, and it had the Game Show Network (233) logo on the screen. I thought it must have changed channels, but when I pressed info it was still on TV Land. I pressed channel up and back down and it was back on TV Land. This happened earlier in the week on a different receiver as well right after it went out.

So far it hasn't gone back out. I hope this will resolve it. I saw another post here from a guy that had the same problem and a new power inverter solved his problem.

If it goes back all I know to do at this point is call them back and have them come back out.

Any suggestions? I am open to any and all ideas here. I am addicted to tv. I will admit it!

I'm leaning towards. Bad LNB or switch, not as much cabling after reading this post. I'd say the power inserter prolly won't change anything but it's possible but I see the problem showing its head again

Thanks Hutch. I was afraid of that. If it goes out it will of course be when I am trying to record my shows!

That's a good clue and reinforces what we are suggesting.
Just to give you an idea how things work. Let's take satellite 101. The satellite has two sets of transponders, odds and evens. To switch between them, the tuner puts a voltage on the cable. 13v for odd transponders, 18v for evens. What you were seeing is the dish delivering an odd numbered transponder instead of an even one. The receiver thinks it's getting the even transponder (so the channel banner is correct) but the picture is from the corresponding channel on the odd transponder. And if there is no corresponding channel on the odd transponder, you will see a 771.
This can be caused by:
A fault in the SWM16
A fault at the dish
A cable/connector issue (by far the most likely)
So we're no better off in knowing which of these is the problem, but it's almost definitely one of them.

A suggestion. Go to the SWM 16 and check the cables/connectors that are connected to the two connectors on the SWM16 marked "18v". You might find that one of these is faulty. Make sure all the connectors are tight. Also check the connectors (all four of them)outside the house on the grounding block, that's where corrosion often occurs. If the dish is within reach, check the connectors at the dish.

If you still can't find the problem, get DirecTv back in. Make sure the service guy checks all the connectors at the SWM16, at the grounding block and at the dish. Ideally persuade him to change the SWM16 and the LNB at the dish, since you can't be certain the problem is not in one of these pieces of equipment, and there's no way to be certain except by replacement.

Thank you so much TexasBrit. I will try that and keep you posted.

Thanks for that explanation about the transponders. I regularly have that issue in my bedroom SD receiver. I never understood why I'd have the wrong channel showing. When it happens I reboot, then it goes to the 771 error. After a couple of days or a week it works right again. I assume it's because someone comes out to fix it. I'm in an MDU. I got tired of reporting it and I don't use the bedroom TV that much. The HD receiver in the LR never has this problem.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Continuing the Kilauea thread in the Pub here. Perhaps the Iceland one too next time there's remarkable activity.

Currently there is precursory lava flowing into the crater, leading to the next episode that'll probably start within the next day.

You can see the pace of inflation / deflation here. It serves as the primary predictor for when the expect the eruptions, which coincide w/ inflation turning into significant deflation and last for several hours on average with significant fountaining.

Wife and I like the AfarTV feeds, for the discussion along w/ them, though they're otherwise just mirrors of the official USGS feeds.

Oooo, quite the show now. All three vents have doming and overflows. The cone that built up around the North vent lost its upper quarter at 02:50 Oct 17 and is now spewing lava at a healthy rate. Don't know if I would say it's a fountain, but it's close.

edit: The USGS has called the official start of Episode 55 as starting at 03:19 HST Oct 17, 2026:

Alert Level: WATCH, Color Code: ORANGE 2026-10-17 13:43:56 UTC
HVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice

Volcano: Kilauea (VNUM #332010)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Issued: Saturday, October 17, 2026, 3:43 AM HST
Source: Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
Notice Number: 2026/H488
Location: N 19 deg 25 min W 155 deg 17 min
Elevation: 4091 ft (1247 m)
Area: Hawaii

Summary: Episode 55 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 3:19 AM HST on October 17, 2026.

Volcanic Activity:
Episode 55 of lava fountaining in Halemaʻumaʻu began at the summit of Kīlauea began at 3:19 AM HST on October 17, 2026.

Fountain heights are relatively low at about 100-150 feet (30-45 m), and it is not clear whether this episode will evolve to the same heights as previous episodes. Continuous overflows from the vents began yesterday, October 16, just before 6 a.m. HST and transitioned into episode 55 fountains at 3:19 a.m. HST this morning. The current forecast is for winds are blowing from the north-northeast direction, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material may be distributed to the south-southwest direction from Halemaʻumaʻu.
  • All eruptive vents and lava flows are confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Tephra fall from volcanic ash clouds is greatest within 3 miles (5 km) of the vents, lighter ash and Pele's Hair may stay suspended for large distances from the vents.
Foxbat
Kīlauea seems to be returning to the "normal" eruption script, impressive fountaining from the North Vent. For once, the V2 Cam has the best overall shot:
IMG_1535.webp
The lava flows have covered a good portion of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor.

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.

Swaggerty's isn't too bad, sausage prices are lower per lb than making my own from pork butts right now so I've been buying JC Potter or Owen lately.
(Swaggerty's at Sam's is pre cut, I usually partially freeze the rolls and cut with my slicer and vacuum seal on parchment paper)

They run Owens at $3.99 for lb and $7.99 a couple times a month at some grocery stores here, I actually was wrong, just checked a pork sirloin roast it was $1.99 a lb. (cooked it yesterday so pack was in trash)

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

I'm curious how they are going to implement Tony into Origins (If they do) ...
Tony was introduced to Gibbs and the team, on NCIS, which makes it the Mothership side of things, he worked in Baltimore prior to NCIS, NO mention when they met that anyone had known one another ...
