Welcome Pack for New Customers

Hi, I just signed up for the forums here because a lot of knowledgeable people seem to be on. Anyway, in my research to find cheap local channels after cancelling Time Warner Cable, I came across Dish Network's "Welcome Pack", which isn't really advertised and I'm still trying to figure out if it's even still available. I know I see it referenced in the fine print of a lot of Dish's current promotions (as in "The Welcome Pack does not apply", etc.), but searching through the forums here, I get the impression that this plan may have either been discontinued and only those who already have it can keep it, or it may only be used as a retention device for customers who already have a higher level plan and want to cancel. I haven't called Dish just yet, but does anyone know if I'm wrong about this? $19.99 sounds like a great deal, I just don't know if it's available to me.

Only local. CBS, NBC, The CW, ABC, Fox, PBS. The thing is I'm streaming most of my entertainment but I still want local channels. I just don't think I'm in a good enough location to get them with an antenna.

Is your internet via TWC? I am asking because they have a Starter TV package for $20/month which includes locals in HD. You could buy a Tivo Romio Plus and up to 8 Tivo Minis if you want DVR capability. The Roamio and Mini as also excellent streaming platforms for Amazon/Netflix/Hulu/YouTube.

That said, you might be better off getting a promotional package with Dish on the Hopper, and then switch to the Welcome Pack later, merely because TWC is such a miserable company to deal with.

Yeah, it is. The only reason I don't want to just do that is because I'm pretty sure that's just a promotional price for one year or so. Actual price in my area is $28, and that's a lot fewer channels. Only good thing about that would be no receiver rental fee (just a decrypter box) because you can hook up through coax. I think I could even just use my Rokus on the other TVs with the TWC app. But yeah, you're right about TWC. It's largely the reason why I cancelled cable.

Thanks, these kind of fees are exactly what I want to avoid. That was the whole point of cutting my TWC service. But I guess I can't avoid at least some receiver fees if I go with Dish as long as I want all my TVs on.

That would be unfortunate, but actually not a dealbreaker for me. I just bought an antenna per my other thread. If that doesn't work out then this is still probably my best option.

Yeah, FiOS, I'm thinking about switching to them for Internet (any experience with their service?), and like I said my interest in the Welcome Pack is just my backup plan now that I have a pretty heavy duty antenna on the way (e.g. landlord might not allow it on the roof; I might not get all the local channels I want). Anyway, for Verizon I would go to their lowest plan, 25/25 for $79.99 I think it is. I'd love to know how that plan handles multiple Netflix/Roku streams, if anyone knows. I really just have had bad experiences with bundling with TWC (price jumps after promos, etc.), so that's why I'd rather do standalone Internet and just pay the real price. Hopefully an antenna will cover me as far as TV goes. Honestly, I'm paying for 100/10 at TWC for around $75 a month total (fees and everything). But I think a FiOS connection would be way more consistent and worth the price jump and speed decrease. What do you think?

EDIT: Wow, you're post just made me realize that Verizon FiOS offers a TV Local Pack with everything I want for even less than the Dish Network Welcome Pack. How did I miss that? Anyone have this plan? Is it really just $12.99 a month?

That is exactly why I was asking. Lots of people over on tivocommunity.com forums speak very highly of the FiOS service. It apparently works very well with Tivos and cablecards. The Internet service is also supposed to be very good. If I could get FiOS Internet, I would do so in a minute.

Also, I don't think your landlord can keep you from putting up an antenna per the OTARD rules.

I think the wording is pretty clear and your interpretation is correct - as a tenant, the roof is off-limits to you. It is not an area you have exclusive rights to.

True, I just meant that the text I read didn't mention the roof specifically. Or maybe I just missed it. Either way, permision will be requested as soon as the company that owns the house calls me back. Antenna should be arriving today too.

They don't mention roofs, walls, etc on purpose. As soon as they try and list things, they'll miss something and people will take that as those spots are now allowed.

I'm positive that even in your own "exclusive use" area, if it requires drilling holes, a landlord can deny it. That's why people with balconies - which are clearly their own exclusive use - end up clamping their dish down or use a cement-filled bucket.

My year was almost up and we got the new bill for a year of service for $ 360.00 insane sat radio is becoming like cable!!! i logged into my acct and hopped onto chat and told the rep that i wanted to cancel. she understood my concern and went quiet for a few minutes. i figured that she was canceling my service. she comes back and said that she seen that i have been a sub since 07 and then offers me the same package for a year for 120.00 with taxes and fee's!!! i grabbed it. after almost having a stroke :biggrin

I know a few people who have plug and play receivers with boomboxes that use them at work due to lack of cell phone service, especially in factory environments surrounded by steal. Someone I used to work with is a FedEx driver now and uses a plug and play receiver in his work truck. In the off-chance when he's in a Sprinter van, he'll use the app via Bluetooth, but his normal truck its a plug and play with a vehicle kit. So while there is a limited market for them, it still exists.

I did that as well, putting one in my Work truck with the antenna kit, trying to do it so WORK didn't see it.

I tried to do that, when I did delivery driver work (2010- 2013), we had a fleet of Freightliners. The newer trucks had headunits that were satellite compatible (XM only I think), but lacked the antenna and guts. I got a car kt for my old Roady XT and tried to use it, but at the volume levels I needed have it at to hear it over the diesel engine it sounded like crap, so I used my phone with an aux cable. When I was in the middle of nowhere with no cell service it didn't do me any good though.

At my current job, one of our new cars has the free trial of SXM active, I frequently have to go off site to a location 75 miles away in a rural area and it's nice being able to use the service off of the satellites versus using the app. There are many places on this journey where all three providers lack service.

I get an e-mail every month reminding me that X amount will be charged to my credit card. If I see it go up I get on chat or pick up the phone. But I also remember that my year is up in December.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

This has been an ongoing issue. A fix is coming, probably in the next software version.

Dish Hopper and Dish Hopper Plus No Alexa in settings

I have Dish Hopper and Hopper Plus and also have Alexa Echo. I link the Alex skill to Dish and it asks me to enter the pairing code shown on the TV. I go into Dish Settings and there is no Alexa shown. Not sure what to do.

tanman shows the Hopper 3 without the Hopper Plus. The Hopper 3 connected to Hopper Plus has a different screen which for me does not have Amazon Alexa either, probably because with the Hopper Plus connected, the DISH Settings is actually an app on the Hopper Plus.

Guys,
Android is Google. Google is Android. Android OS and Google TV are the same thing.
The Hopper+ and Joey 4's run Android TV, which is Google's television version of Android.
That means under the hood, you have:

Linux kernel
Android framework
Google TV / Android TV interface
Google Play Store for TV apps

Alexa is the competition. Google is not going to host their competition.
The old Hopper Carbon UI is NOT Google so that's why Alexa was on there.

Understood. But here's the rub - Google Assistant setup is ALSO missing from the Hopper Plus setup. I'm a paraplegic.and need to use voice controls as much as possible but I can't press a button on the remote to activate Google Assistant. I prefer ALEXA (or ALEXA+) but I have one older google device and will go that route IF they make it available. BTW calling Dish Customer Service is no help- they just say they have no info on if/when there will be an update.

Yes, many have hacked a DirecTV or Dish Network dish before. Quite undersized, but would receive the 97w KU stations with an LNBF swap. Make a template to set the LNBF face angle and distance from the reflector. Remove the current circular polarity LNBFs and make a bracket to hold the replacement linear LNBF in the correct centered position. Remember to set the polarity skew.

would probably also work well for NHK on 101W and possibly for PBS on 99W. I used one for a while on 30W. Just keep in mind that because it's undersized for those satellites, it might work fine in clear weather but won't have much margin to account for signal degradation during rain/snow

If you can find one, the Shaw / Star Choice 75e ellipticals are great for use on 97, 99, and 101W. They are really just rebranded ChannelMaster 75 cm reflectors and use linear LNBFs by default out of the box.

Everyone else's mileage may vary.

I have read that some have converted this type dish but after giving it a good look, it's the lnb conversion that is the bottleneck. Does anyone have a picture of their attempt to configure the lnb? I watched a video on youtube from the save it for parts guy and he used duct tape! Guess it worked but I'm thinking something a bit more permanent!

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:

All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
- Independent of record too! Bonus.
MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
I'm out of ideas.

Cons

Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
- Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
Going to start resting players?
- The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
- Resting players could make games dumb.
- Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Seeing theres very little activity in the MLB threads, it wouldn't matter if I posted that the Astros didn't make the Playoffs ...

I have a solution that is guaranteed to work.
All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!
Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won

Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?
I'd be happy to roll back to last July.
