RVU setup questions

I just purchased a 2016 model Samsung 4K Smart tv with built in RVU (UN55KU6300F) and I want to know the process for connecting/activating it. Here's the setup:
-Kaku SWM3 satellite on roof
-4way SWM switch in basement, connecting to all 4 rooms/wall plates
-HR54 in Living Room; it's connected to my wifi wirelessly
-C51 in Kitchen
-C51 in Master Bedroom
-no receiver in Man Cave (where RVU tv will be), and wall plate is connected to satellite system

So 1st question... how does the RVU tv connect to the system? Do I just plug a coax from the wall plate into the coax port on the tv? (That was what some guy told me, but that didn't sound right) Do I need a DECABB to convert the coax signal from the wall plate to ethernet and plug that directly into the ethernet port on the back of the tv? Or does the RVU tv connect to the DirecTV through my wifi network?

2nd question... once I've connected it to the system, do I add it just like the clients? With the PIN number generated in the "Add Clients"? I'm assuming I'll have to call D* and give them some information like the serial number on the tv or something??

And lastly, will it cost me anything more per month? I've had the service for less than a month, and I know that right now the price is supposed to be the same up to 4tvs.

Sorry for the long post, just want to utilize this feature.

rad - how does the speed on your Samsung compare to other clients (it you've used them). Previously the biggest complaint about RVU was it was pretty slow, even slower than early clients, but I haven't read my that have experience with the newer models of TVs and I'm curious if it has improved.

For example, I had a C31 on a HR34 for a couple days and turned it off and sent it back because it was so slow.

Today I use a C51 with a HR44 and I am satisfied with the performance.

I installed a Sony 800c rvu recently . I have a hr 54 with 3 c41 and when I installed the rvu it knocked out one of c41. Had to installed an hr 25. You need to connect the rg 6 to the deca that goes to the TV via Ethernet. It took 4 techs on the phone to get it installed correctly. The first 3 didn't know how to do it. You will need to give them the serial and Mac address for the DECA and then they will ask for the Mac address for the TV. Believe it or not this is still new to some of the customer service reps on the phone. They charge 7 dollars a month.

Jason, actually not bad, at least compared to the C61K that's also on the set, but still not as fast as the Genie directly. There are two things that I don't like with it, no setting for screen fit on aspect ratio and no stacking of skip commands. But then again you also were using a HR34, hell that boxes performance sucks no matter what.

Nope, neither Samsung I've tried would allow for screen fit.

FWIW I just Jumped ship from Dish TV to To ATT/D*TV xtra bundle and HR54 ,C51 4 room std install .

For starters I like the HD picture a lot Better than Dish (only up to ) 14440p HD lite signals out of the birds that is more like the early 36" Sony XBR Wega FD HD Ready XBR CRT boat anchor I had in the early to barley mid 2000's until I gave it to my son and got my now gone 55" Sony Grand Wega 1080 Lycos slimline (for RP) set in Jan 05

Along with all that the Dish bit staving often gives up a poor HD image ,depth and chroma IMO anyway .

More on topic like someone posted you may need an HR 25 or something bridge or client device or a DECA for the Sony or Samsung RVU and D*TV 4K features or specifically the embedded D*TV apps in your RVU ready TV and maybe an Ethernet cable from the client or bridge to the TV at least on the Sony's

AFAIK Not much is free at 4K on D*TV and will be some $$ or another and not much free 4K content bandwidth = $$ to these thugs and thier content providers and I think you may have to pay a 4K service recurring fee but I'm not sure .

When I mentioned that RVU feature to the D*TV tech for my Sony 4K X850C
he wasn't having any part of that mess at all on this trip so I let it drop and otherwise everything else was fine and it all works well with a significantly better HD picture and chroma than bit starved Dish HD lite that makes panels dither more than they should anyway.

All that mess aside there are plenty of cheaper 4K alternatives out there in the embedded 4K TV apps and Netflix and Amazon anyway and like anything else it all depends on the care and quality of the production and mixing and delivery to the end user 4K and or HDR is not necessarily a ticket to nirvana and HDR is giving mixed results to those of us with HDR sets it can be fabulous or not as good as SDR

My advice to 4K newbies is a at least a 2TB Expansion desk USB NTFS HDD plugged into the TV to play any properly formatted content from using a PC with the HDD plugged into it for the while on broadband to download phat high bit-rate 4K video files and factory demos and use a you tube downloader for 4K there unless your TV can play it directly like the Andoid Sony's. all that stuff outside of you tube is more often way better quality than anthing D*TV or Dish can offer within thier restricted bandwidths and so is Netflix HEVC 4K and Amzon Prime hires

TBH wide color Gamut + HDR are more significant than 4K and that includes SDR WCG which often implies 4K anyway. The Samsung SUHD or whatever it is this year and Sony Triluminous are wide color Gamut /HDR or HDR ready TV's

I would certainly say upgrading to a decent wide color gamut HDR or HDR ready set is a real worthwhile endeavor on any content if you know how to use it and you know your basic 3 color spaces and calibration basics.

Color space and Color volume are significant improvements in WCG and or HDR + WCG. Movies are mostly using DCI P3 well above .bt709 HDTV and full .BT 2020 is the seldom attained holy grail for now .al this has better primary's and color gradations and a billon colors vs 1.2 M .

We can see ~ 14 bit color and a sunny day is maybe 11,000 NITS so all this is very far from real life for now .

Regular LCD TV cant make decent primary colors and down the line accordingly compared to genuine wide color gamut panels.

FWIW the high bit rate UHD /WCG demos and independent videos can spin up to maybe 60 plus MBPS bursts out of a fast rusty metal HDD and blow anything away short of an UHD HDR10 /DV 4K DVD and they are real close or indistinguishable sometimes and can both put 5 star Blue Rays to shame

OH if you can load KODI 15.x something or higher into the 4K TV (or if you have it in the TV ) that's the player you want to use .

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

There are many examples in the headlines of people getting burned multiple times and not wavering in their pursuit of stupidity.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

Agents need appropriate context to make what would be understood as the correct read in a situation like that, and that Gemini answer was a clear miss on that front.

That said, we've also seen Musk (and/or his team) put his thumb on the scale (or just release a very poor product) with his own deployed AI since:

In the end, it's all a tool. Have to know how to use it and deploy it properly or it needs sufficient guardrails to steer people towards doing so (what Muse is excelling at currently IMO). I'm routinely interacting with several agents a day operating various processes locally and in services I use, and there are numerous others silently spun up to perform actions or satisfy requests from my prompts.

Related to earlier discussion in the thread on leveraging local inference: this kind of analysis happening behind the scenes is something everyone will have built into Windows, IMO. Most people won't see all of this, just the results, unless they want to dig into how the fix was chosen. Stuff like this will be standard as agents get local system access baked in, and more of the inference itself moves on-device.

My year was almost up and we got the new bill for a year of service for $ 360.00 insane sat radio is becoming like cable!!! i logged into my acct and hopped onto chat and told the rep that i wanted to cancel. she understood my concern and went quiet for a few minutes. i figured that she was canceling my service. she comes back and said that she seen that i have been a sub since 07 and then offers me the same package for a year for 120.00 with taxes and fee's!!! i grabbed it. after almost having a stroke :biggrin

I tried to do that, when I did delivery driver work (2010- 2013), we had a fleet of Freightliners. The newer trucks had headunits that were satellite compatible (XM only I think), but lacked the antenna and guts. I got a car kt for my old Roady XT and tried to use it, but at the volume levels I needed have it at to hear it over the diesel engine it sounded like crap, so I used my phone with an aux cable. When I was in the middle of nowhere with no cell service it didn't do me any good though.

At my current job, one of our new cars has the free trial of SXM active, I frequently have to go off site to a location 75 miles away in a rural area and it's nice being able to use the service off of the satellites versus using the app. There are many places on this journey where all three providers lack service.

I have to think maybe more people dont keep track of the monthly XM bill. Every time i renew i put a reminder on my calendar week before its time to renew. My wife told me the other day not to renew her and then i told her you are not going to be able to listen to XM at home. Then she changed her mind...!!

I get an e-mail every month reminding me that X amount will be charged to my credit card. If I see it go up I get on chat or pick up the phone. But I also remember that my year is up in December.

Yes, many have hacked a DirecTV or Dish Network dish before. Quite undersized, but would receive the 97w KU stations with an LNBF swap. Make a template to set the LNBF face angle and distance from the reflector. Remove the current circular polarity LNBFs and make a bracket to hold the replacement linear LNBF in the correct centered position. Remember to set the polarity skew.

would probably also work well for NHK on 101W and possibly for PBS on 99W. I used one for a while on 30W. Just keep in mind that because it's undersized for those satellites, it might work fine in clear weather but won't have much margin to account for signal degradation during rain/snow

If you can find one, the Shaw / Star Choice 75e ellipticals are great for use on 97, 99, and 101W. They are really just rebranded ChannelMaster 75 cm reflectors and use linear LNBFs by default out of the box.

Everyone else's mileage may vary.

I have read that some have converted this type dish but after giving it a good look, it's the lnb conversion that is the bottleneck. Does anyone have a picture of their attempt to configure the lnb? I watched a video on youtube from the save it for parts guy and he used duct tape! Guess it worked but I'm thinking something a bit more permanent!

Many of us have used a universal LNBF mount (or get creative with L brackets and plumbers tape - perforated metal strapping). Use a few inches of aluminum tube (or a piece of 1x2" lumber) to extend the support arm (replacing the plastic mount used by DirecTV and Dish) to place the LNBF throat opening at the correct distance from the reflector, the correct height and at the correct angle. Nothing magical... simply place the new linear LNBF in the center at the same distance, height and angle as the current combo.

Odd that out there, Prem is only 40 cents higher. Here it's a full dollar more.

Last night it was about $4.17 gas, $6,19 diesel.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - Paramount+

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

H3 EHD lists upcoming airings instead of recordings on EHD and often won't recognize EHD is connected after reboot

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

JohnGalt1234 - So you basically have 2 Hopper 3's. The CasinoH3 is the one that is Hopper 3 only while Master Bedroom is a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup.
Master Bedroom uses Android TV (ATV) software so the DISH part is actually a app and will behave differently as you can probably tell the Guide's are different on the Master Bedroom which will resemble the same guide used on other ATV devices such as the Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4. If I am correct, the CasinoH3 is the one with the problem since you did say the one dated 09/05/2026 is the naughty one while 08/15/2026 named Master Bedroom is the nice one. Usually I would expect the CasinoH3 to be the one without the problem because it's Hopper 3 only and Master Bedroom would be the one with problems because it has the Hopper Plus involved. That is why they behave differently because CasinoH3 is running the native Hopper 3 software while Master Bedroom is running the Android TV software and also it runs a app called DISH known as package com.dish.atv.launcher, the version for mines is P15403 2026100917 so it's probably the same version as the Hopper Plus software version with the date of October 9, 2026, not sure what the 17 means except maybe revision 17?

As I understand it, the android is just the display signal from the hopper+. I can disconnect the H+ and plug the hdmi directly into the master hopper3.

It is not just a display signal as explained above. When you have the Hopper+ connected, it uses Android TV for pretty much everything except for the satellite signal which is why it uses the DISH app for the standard Hopper 3 functions. But that should not matter because in your case, CasinoH3 is the Hopper 3 with the EHD which is what you call the naughty one based on the dates you mentioned and Master Bedroom which has the Hopper Plus connected to the Hopper 3 that does not have the problem. So one way to test the theory is disconnect the Hopper Plus from that Hopper 3 and then use the EHD's connected to CasinoH3 currently to see if the same issue exists. That way you will know if the problem is there without a Hopper Plus connected or if CasinoH3 is just a bad hopper to begin with.

Normally when you disconnect the Hopper Plus, it will be 30 minutes or more before you can use the Hopper 3 again.

What you want to do is:
hold the POWER button in, not the red reset button, for about 45 seconds or so while disconnecting the power to the Plus and moving the HDMI cable and it will reboot to the normal Hopper only immediately.

One comes online, the other one consistently will not come online

One comes online; the other consistently won't. Also, when I connect the EHD, the USB Detected status light on the EHD itself changes from Red to Green. But the Hopper (713) does not start the EHD read process. The light changes to indicate that the EHD has detected a valid USB cable, but the Hopper does not recognize it.
