It's time for me think about retiring my 9 year old Pioneer VSX-820. I admittedly have not stayed on top of the tech, nor for that matter, terminology. In addition to simple DD 5.1, the 820 also had "B" speakers which I use often to listen to my vintage Advents. What I want to do now is a 5.1.2 setup, with future height speakers near or on the ceiling, an about 4' out from the TV wall. I don't want to mess with trying to wire for backs. I want Amos and MAYBE Dolby Vision. I can get DV now on Netflix through my LG OLED 65B7a. AND I want to run my Advents. I get a little lost trying to understand how Zone 2 or 3 work Here is a pic of my setup minus back surrounds behind camera I posted in another thread. So, I sit here open to recommendations and suggestions. I am not predisposed to any make. Thanks,

Kent

Yeah. If you are price shopping, you need to accept last year's features. Manufacturers tend to drop prices just before new models come out.

(I know, how profound.)

When the question is DolbyVision and HLG, it is probably not a good idea to bet on last year's hardware unless it is already proven compatible (especially if you're a DIRECTV subscriber where HLG seems to be the order of the day for UHD programming). HDMI capability has been the keystone to AVR longevity for a while now and to get stuck with something that can't do all the latest HDR and WCG stuff would be a terrible shame.

I understand what you are saying, but I've been at this since the 70s, and there are other factors in play.

Rule #1: You will pay a premium for the latest and greatest.
Rule #2: in a year, your latest and greatest will be obsolete and there will be a new latest and greatest. It is a fundamental rule of merchandising.
Rule #3: with rare exceptions (HD-DVD anyone). last year's equipment will continue to function at the level it was designed for. You may be missing some groovy mode or feature, but there will be a lesser mode that still functions.
(even HD-DVD still plugs into todays receiver and plays movies. Although I can't get new ones, I still enjoy all those $1 titles bought during the closeout)

I don't deny that there are folks who are willing to take the hit and update every year, but the people asking in these threads are trading in 10 year old receivers. This is similar to my philosophy to buy good stuff and then ignore the latest and greatest until the equipment limitations are too great to ignore. About every 10 years.

FWIW, Harshness, I never actually advocated buying last year's stuff. MY comment was along the lines that if price was a primary concern, you would be looking at the previous model for a given level of performance. This might be perfectly acceptable to many. Say you have $1000 to spend on a new receiver. Which is the better buy? The new one with features, or the year old model with higher power and more channels? Careful, there is no one right answer.

Its a matter of education, and I was advocating that in my post.

There's a corollary to this that says that paying a premium doesn't always get you the latest and greatest. Denon drives that point home almost every year.
Rule #2: in a year, your latest and greatest will be obsolete and there will be a new latest and greatest. It is a fundamental rule of merchandising.
Onkyo's and perhaps Yamaha's 2017 models seem to support most of what you're going to need in the for the foreseeable future of HDR and WCG. Getting something today that doesn't already handle HLG isn't just a tragedy for DIRECTV subscribers but also for those looking forward to ATSC 3.0. Adding two or four more channels may or may not make or break the listening experience but not being able to correctly pass the video signal is a show stopper.
Rule #3: with rare exceptions (HD-DVD anyone). last year's equipment will continue to function at the level it was designed for. You may be missing some groovy mode or feature, but there will be a lesser mode that still functions.
At introduction and for quite a while after, HD-DVD was plenty capable of handling the technologies on the horizon. Greater than 5.1 sound wasn't an concern and neither was UHD.

We often feel sorry for people who have a TV die on them and have to replace it with something known to be missing some significant aspect of what's coming (I'm not sure where 3D falls in this). Modern AVRs are becoming more about their place as a switching device between sources as the audio changes become less and less discernable (as well as more expensive and difficult to correctly implement). Choosing one that doesn't handle what is already upon us or based on where a favored brand happens to be at the time is flawed reasoning.

I always assumed that HDMI switching was more a case of just passing the bits on to the display device. Why should an AVR care if the 4K picture it's passing through its signal pathways is HDR or not? The AVR just needs to extract the audio portion of the bitstream and properly interpret it. Am I wrong?

The issue is deciding what parts are audio and what parts are video is precisely the issue. For whatever reason, those demarcation lines seem to trip up certain devices (this includes sound bars and HTIB). Around the Olympic Games, there was quite a bit of discussion about having to bypass the AVR or sound bar and try alternate connection methods to get it all to work.

It is possible to have a 4K AVR. And not be able to pass thru the 4K. Losing sound or picture. If the AVR does not have the current HDMI HDCP version. Example.
HDCP 2.2 is a technology designed to prevent illegal copying of 4K Ultra HD content.

Every link in your video chain must support HDCP 2.2 — your TV, video source, and any component the video signal passes through. If one does not, you won't see a 4K picture.

HDMI 2.0 is also required for TVs and components to be able to pass 4K video. But you can't assume that every device that has HDMI 2.0 will also support HDCP 2.2. .

Hope this helps.

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Actually, it is. A couple of people PMed me when I posted this, and when I asked for an address, they never responded. Then I just sort of let it go. Send me a PM to continue the discussion
Anony55
Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

This will be a SAD DAY when this passes ....

They complained the last year that we had a bunch of Blow Outs in the Playoffs ... heres an idea, lets Double the amount of teams and hope for Closer games ... ya right.

This never should have went past 8 teams, 10 at the most.

Now, I have heard that play in games are being talked about, such as #13 plays #24 and so forth, to cut the field down (why cut it down, just don't expand it.)
I'm not sure exactly how thats going to work out or if it was just someone talking.

They were also talking about starting the Season earlier ...

I really don't like the National Championship game being the end of January ... if the Semi Finals are over New Years, thats fine with the Championship game the next week.

Had no idea there were that many redundancies built into those restraints.
It makes sense, however, I would want more types of restraints, so if one doesn't work, the other does ... the restraints coming over the shoulder I would have expected ... with a Seat belt as last resort.

Fwiw, I inquired with what they use on Coasters at Cedar Point, various Coasters, different restraints according to what the car and track requires ...

NONE of the Coasters at CP use THAT particular system :)
I'm glad to see ...

According to the article, when you see a seat belt on a ride like this, it is basically used as a way of making sure the rider isn't too large/fat to safely ride the ride.

Well, the over the shoulder support is better, but would require reconfiguring the cars.
Jimbo
Heres an article from the Akron Beacon ... seeing Six Flags has bought Cedar Point and Kings Island, they are included ...
I said earlier that Cedar Point doesn't use this type of seat restraint ... well, it does use it, But the difference is, the ones up here ALSO have the Over the shoulder restraint as well ... like I was suggesting that they should have used with the Goliath.

One of the new(er) one at Cedar point the Gate Keeper, uses the Clam shell .. I have rode it many times and have Mostly felt secure, that ride will stop you part way on the ride and you just hang, till the ride is ready to continue ... I typically ride the Front Car ... when its getting ready, you ARE hanging, in the car, looking down .... it would require 2 separate restraint systems to unlock at the same time to possibly get out of it.

A big win for the Patriots, and they are now 3-2.

Browns lose a close one with... The Jets. That is a classic Browns loss (granted, any loss is a classic one it seems). 49'ers, Vikings, and Chiefs remain undefeated. The AFC north have a three way tie at 3-2 for second place.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Have you tested using external power? Over the years, have found unpowered polarity switching to be unreliable. Especially problematic when used with DiSEqC motors or switch stacking.

No I have not. I just got it the other day and it is connected to six receivers working just fine. What I do is non power mini multi-switches work best with LNBF's and with LNB's

It also has a IPS and a OPS switch on the side of it with a power led light showing when is on. It seems to be very nice build switch
