The company's pay-TV business, which includes satellite TV and Sling TV, lost a net of 194,000 subscribers in the fourth quarter, fewer than the 334,000 it lost a year earlier.

The company lost 94,000 subscribers in its Sling TV streaming service in the quarter, compared with an addition of 47,000 during the same period last year.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Logs show that it aborted after running out of Worker Processes.

Further sluthing by ChatGPT showed that the backup crashed and kept trying to start new sessions again and again until it crashed the web server. It gave me some suggested config file changes, but its the first time that has happened and the server is running (normally) so well that I don't want to mess with right now, but is Something I will keep an eye on.

Sounds like you need to figure out why the backup process failed.

Just doing a big security update on the server, may slow down then again it may not. Just wanted to warn you guys. :D

2024 Kia EV9 Light Long Range 4D Sport Utility.jpeg

I had been wanting to get an EV for a couple of years but really couldn't justify it as my Yukon was nearly new and had only 50k miles. Last year we moved my mother into my home and she was having trouble getting into the Yukon, so I decided it was a good time to a vehicle a little easier to get into. The EV 9 had just recently hit dealer lots a little earlier in 2024 and I had been watching them. So in 3 weeks it will have been a year since I got my 2024 Kia EV 9 Light Long Range.

I really enjoy driving it. It's nearly the same size as my 2017 GMC Yukon. I think the Kia has more interior room. It definitely has more rear leg room for the 2nd and 3rd row. It's not the fastest EV out there, but it has plenty of power for normal day to day driving. Made several trips to the lake house this summer. That's usually my longest regular trip. Its 198 miles round trip and the EV9 does that easily even driving 85-90mph on the interstate. Usually charge up to 100% the night before and get back with 20-25% remaining depending on how fast I drive. It was raining and I drove closer to 75mph a few weeks ago and got back with 26%, but was at 20% last week after driving 90mph on a sunny 90F day. Overall I average 2.6m/kWh. Feature wise it's a step up from my 2017 GMC Yukon , which is a nice vehicle but I really hate having to drive it much anymore. The Emporia EVSE in my garage knows my electric rate and logs all the charging. It's been costing me an avg of $20 a month to drive 700-800 miles a month. Less for the year than what it cost me just to change the oil and service the Yukon a couple of weeks ago.

I wouldn't want to go back to a combustion vehicle. The driving experience is just so much better with the EV.

Picture is from the day I picked it up the first week of Nov 2024.

Replacing the wiring harness, so has to come by boat from Korea first, looks like I'll have this rental for a month or two. Booo.

At least they're going to pay for gas and stuff, so that was good to hear.

Dang it's easy to get used to 4 motors and 900HP. Drove the EV9 today instead of the Rivian and could really tell there was 700HP missing. 😂. Still really like the EV9 and will miss it.
meStevo
lol, the sales arm of the Kia dealership is starting to ping me 'want to make plans or move on from your EV9?'

I tell them that I'd be open to anything that doesn't involve anything out of pocket, ends my lease and puts me in a new EV9 at same or better trim - and admitting up front that I'm not in a position to expect anything to happen and respecting everyone's time I don't think it's worth pursuing.

Then they send me a EV9 Short Range deal for $550/mo - a downgrade from my LLR - while mentioning Kia Financial is pretty strict on lease options, as if I didn't just tie them both together as needing to be dealt with.

el oh el.

I didn't respond. Fed it into Muse and even it had a laugh.

I've got Muse tracking EV prices and some of the vehicles I'd consider.

Got my EV9 back, they replaced the front wiring harness. It wasn't super weird going from the EV9 to the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee... the Jeep just felt so jerky and kinda loud but didn't bother me much - certainly didn't feel like a $30k+ car. But going the other way, what a jarring experience. I had forgotten that feeling of going from ICE to EV, how smooth the ride is and how quiet it is.

I'm thinking of switching to DirecTV and wanted to know what equipment I should be asking for.

I'm wanting wired satellite due to that fact that I live in the sticks and there is no reliable, decent speed internet for streaming available.

What would be the correct equipment for three 4K tvs in the house?

That is simply not true. The HR54 can access the internet just like the HS17 can. So if he orders the HS17 and 3 C61K's explain to me like I am 5 years old how they are going to install those C61K's wireless.

To vlad_ if they say they can't do the install you want as I described email the Office of the President at their email address: directv_oop_customer_care@directv.com and tell them what you want and see what they say. You can't trust anything a DIRECTV CSR tells you.
The DirecTV order entry work flow doesn't allow wired clients with an HS17. Does that clear it up for you?

How does that work ?

Or do I havwe that flip flopped ?

I would take an HR54 over a HS17 ANY day of the week ... The HR54 Looks like a recvr, works in your set up fine ...
The HS17 is a large triangle that looks stupid in your equipment, often they try to Hie in behind something ... just a poor design over all.

If you got an HS17 they Forced you to give up you Stand alone Recvrs ... just a poor idea ...
I had my HR54 to the end, along with my HR24's ...

At least I could still enjoy D* when traveling in the Motor home when I kept the HR54 set up at home, as well as at the lake.

It's not a poor design when you factor in that it has a Wireless Video Bridge built-in. It's shaped like a router or gateway for a reason.

Maybe a Business router or gateway ...
Not a Home customer set up.

FWIW, I'm referring to the Physical size and shape, not what it does internally.
The fact I had to give up all my Stand Alone recvrs to use it was the major reason I didn't want it.

We're a DirecTV retailer and there is no where in the order entry flow to have wired clients with an HS17. I heard that when it's ordered on the website the installer shows up with only HS17's and wireless clients. I don't know how reliable that info is as it came from a dubious source but it makes sense.

HBO Max and Paramount+ to Combine Into One Streaming Platform, Paramount Says HBO Brand Will 'Operate With Independence'

Paramount+ right now is at $13.99 for the ad-free with Showtime content and HBO MAX is now $22.99 for the 4K ad-free plan so together they are $36.98. By the time this goes through the approval process which I am sure will fly right through you would probably looking at $50 per month for the ad-free 4K plan combined.

No word on how it will work yet. There is speculation you may be able to still get them individually if you want or a bundle at a cheaper price like Disney does with their bundles. Will probably be 2027 before anything happens though. Takes time.

For the naysayers who did not think this service would make it, just added another 4.9M subscribers and that was after the removal of 1.2M Russia subscribers.

This is even better, Paramount+ revenue grew 120% and Subscription revenue grew 74% year-over-year ( 2nd quarter 2021/ 2nd quarter 2022) to $830M, principally reflecting paid subscriber growth on Paramount+.

Now compare that to Peacock with only 13 million paid, 13 million free.

But that's first I've heard of them doing it with just 2 active rx's- usually it was 4 or more that would trigger it. I had to do a svc call once to house with 2 722s and 2 322s to satisfy them.

Here's what happened in a nutshell. Dish spurned the proprieties of the established C-band dealers who were their previous customers for C-band gear to lure all manner of scammers to activate DiSH accounts to run up #s to show the programmers to get reductions in per-sub charges. This of course and as intended attracted copious scammers to goose DiSH out to the public without any cares for its satisfaction. We the dealers could only watch in abject dismay as this played out. Then of course Dish figured out they'd been burned by their own greed and enacted a long series of clampdowns on anyone's abilities to remain in business to serve local viewers. Everyone was now a crook to them, dealers, customers, even distributors. But they made that bed themselves from the start. They used their heft to torpedo the local dealer.

All the while gaslighting with their annual "retailer summits". Their aim was never the good of the home that they purported to "put a dish in every". (Mod edit: political part deleted)

All they had to do was to take the incredible goodwill they entered with and just maintain that through a little bit of public empathy. In past generations there would have been no question as to the propriety toward customers and their communities. To Charlie, we were all sheep for the fleecing

Interesting reading on AI digital narrow band video.

Have fun reading this cool stuff!:):hatsoff2

The experimental landscape for commercial and broadcast-grade video over the lower frequencies is heating up. Major broadcasting consortia and international experimental stations are actively pushing the boundaries of what can be crammed into a mediumwave or shortwave footprint.
The biggest real-world updates on commercial and experimental digital AI video applications on the MW and HF bands showcase these emerging trends:

🌍 The Massive Breakthrough: STARWAVES & DRM "Diveemo" VVC Showcase
A massive milestone for commercial digital radio video occurred when the STARWAVES DRM Diveemo implementation premiered. [1]
  • The Technology: For the first time, engineers successfully ran real-time video over the Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) standard across the AM (Mediumwave) and FM bands. [1]
  • How it works: Instead of relying on traditional power-hungry video formats, this breakthrough integrates the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) compression standard alongside the xHE-AAC audio codec. By blending VVC with data-efficient stream multiplexing, they proved that a free-to-air broadcast can deliver functioning video services alongside audio and multimedia without any internet connection. [1]
  • The SDR View: Because this is built directly onto the standard DRM protocol, it utilizes the exact same MW/HF bandwidth windows used by digital commercial radio today, meaning SDRs equipped with a DRM decoder plugin are the front-line receivers for this tech.

🧠 The DRM Consortium's AI Showcase (UNESCO World Radio Day)
The DRM Consortium staged an unprecedented series of global shortwave and mediumwave technical demonstrations showcasing AI-enhanced broadcasting. [1, 2]
  • The AI Component: The trials demonstrated how AI tools can dynamically generate multi-language text-to-audio content and sync it with text and images over shortwave and mediumwave channels. [1, 2, 3]
  • The Delivery: The transmission was picked up across five continents. The receiving equipment transformed the incoming low-bandwidth digital radio data into a localized Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing standard tablets and smartphones to pull down the dynamic, AI-generated multimedia content completely off-grid. [1, 2, 3, 4]

⚖️ The FCC Crackdown on "Secret" Experimental HF Stations
On the regulatory front, the FCC issued a sweeping policy change targeting the mysterious, high-power experimental HF stations operating in the 2–25 MHz bands. [1]
  • The Context: Many of these experimental stations (some running up to a massive 800 kW of power) had previously been granted waivers to transmit complex digital data signals without identifying themselves.
  • The New Rule: The FCC officially revoked these waivers due to widespread interference complaints from other spectrum users, including the amateur radio community. Moving forward, all experimental digital HF broadcasters must disable all digital encoding and modulation at least once every 30 minutes to transmit their call signs in clear voice or Morse code.
  • What to watch for: If you are monitoring your Malahit-DSP2's waterfall on the HF bands, look for massive, wide digital data pipes that suddenly drop their digital mode twice an hour to broadcast a standard analog station ID. These are the primary testing grounds where proprietary, high-speed data formats—including narrow-band video architectures—are being tested. [1]

Interesting how the price goes up in one part of the country and down in other parts and then the trend reverses despite oil prices. We went up from $4.05 to $4.23 two days ago while there are reports that prices went significantly down elsewhere.

As of now, here in the Panhandle of FL, prices go from 3.89 to 4.29 from one exit on I-10 to the next. So be sure to use an app like Gas Buddy if in the area.

Heck....I see the same thing just in our area. The town I live in had the lowest prices for quite a while and now we are the most expensive.

I know that prices will vary but one would think that prices would be relative between different parts of the country. I'm just wondering if there's some logic to the radical variation in prices. Some people here will report a 20 cent decrease in price while it goes up 30 cents here on the same day.

Prices at freeway interchanges are always the worst. This is especially true for the stations located in tollways.
