Gone are the days of soundbars being the weak sister of the tv/audio world. There is a lot of work going on in the soundbar market these days. Supporting Atmos, DTS:X and other advanced audio codecs as well as upscaling from practically anything to faked versions of those codecs.

And they are doing it is interesting ways too! One of the biggest advantages of the soundbar setups is getting that surround feeling from something at the front of the room. Sony has some soundbars that do it with their processors, and some reviews indicate that the implementation is working very well where having rear speakers just isn't an option, or the ceiling is just wrong to bounce sound off of. Their newest, affordable is the HT-G700. Hard to find reviews right now as it is so new, but at $600 it seems to be a lot of upscale soundbar for not a lot of money.

Others are taking the route of using wireless subs and connecting the surround speakers to them with wires. That solves the problem of wires from the tv area to the back of the room. Nakamichi is doing that with their Shockwafe line of soundbars and at pretty reasonable pricing also. Starting at $749 for their 7.1.4 with single sub, then a 7.2.4 setup at $999, and their top of line 9.2.4 at $1399.

LG is taking a different approach. Instead of connecting rear speakers to the wireless subwoofer, they have a 2 speaker + wireless receiver for the rears. It is useable on a few of their models, and come with at least one model.

Samsung is still in the game with a lot of different soundbar setups, under their own name as well as Harman-Kardon that they own. Prices are all over the place with these, up to about $1600 or so.

Seinhauser has their Ambeo soundbar that does away with subwoofer and rear speakers. It gets great reviews. It is a big soundbar, it is heavy and it is expensive at about $2500.

I've got the older Samsung HW-K950 and it is still doing great. Recently got the bug for a new setup and was literally moments away from ordering Nakamichi's Ultra 9.2.4 soundbar setup. But last night I rented Vin Diesel's latest shoot 'em up, Bloodshot in 4K with Atmos and kicked up the volume. WOW! I had forgotten just how good it sounded since I've been watching mostly streaming, non-Atmos stuff recently. I'm surprised my neighbor wasn't complaining!

When someone comes up with a way to do surrounds wirelessly with an AVR I'll be interested. Until then, nope, not going to happen.

I suppose if I wanted my AV room to look crappy with all sorts of exposed wiring I could do it, but I don't want that.

There are several options when it comes to "wireless" satellites. There are offerings from JBL, Klipsch, Yamaha, Polk Audio, Denon, Bose, Bowers & Wilkins and $ono$. Most of them aren't truly wireless (just as the offerings from Nakamichi aren't). I think if the scheme were practical, there would be many more options. The JBL satellites are truly wireless but you have to "dock" them to the sound bar to charge them.

"Wireless" speakers that have power leads or must be wired to another component are a baldfaced lie. The singular advantage to these fake "wireless" speakers seems to be that you don't have to worry about correct phasing (matching up the terminals with the correct conductor in the speaker wire).
lparsons21
That's just bogus! Yeah, most of the 'wireless' speakers that are out there now aren't completely wireless. They have amps inside of them and plug into power.

But that eliminates the wiring from front to back, which is the primary reason using fully wired systems is difficult or messy in these 'open' design homes. In my case it is even difficult to wire the side to side in the back because of the room's design.

There are some wireless solutions that can be used with AVRs but most aren't very good and aren't totally wireless either. Usually a single box that talks to a transmitter connected to the rear speaker connections on the AVR and then wires to the two speakers. I'm not aware of any of those that can do more than 2 channels, so no Atmos or other height codecs.

In the more advanced soundbars there is lots of work with electronically twiddling the audio to fake your ears out. From reviews it seems there are a few that do a very good job of it. Even Nakamichi is doing that as they have no upfiring speakers in their setup either. For Atmos the Samsung soundbars with upfiring speakers do a better job with the soundfield than does Nakamichi. But the Nakamichi does a better job than my Samsung. Reviews seem to support that opinion too.

Just ordered the Nakamichi - Shockwafe 9.2.4 for the new house, wife made me promise to keep it simple in the main living room, no wires, no extra equipment, so bought the 75" TCL 8 series (Roku), so it will just be that and the Nakamichi, I know that you have to hook up the sides/rears to the wireless subs but I can hide those under the couch.

Going to convert one of the garages ( house has 2) to be the main theater with Processor/Amp(s), Projector, etc, that is where she will let me go wild.

Wow,it has been a long time since I've posted in a forum. My living room is small so my first sound set up was a Sony two channel system with Sony SS7000 tower speakers. When the unit went out after a lightening strike close by I got A Vizio 2.1 sound stand and used it for two years.Well it was better than the TV speakers.Back in February Amazon had the Zvox 670 for $240 so I jumped on it.I have it sitting on one square inch blocks on all four corners and my new 65 inch Sony sitting on top of it.Hey the wife and I are happy with our system and it sounds great and looks neat.

Returned the Nakamichi a few weeks ago, rears and subs would constantly have to be re-connected, don't know if the drop outs is just a flaw or if because they are in the 5ghz wireless signal range and interference from my routers caused it, also it sounds like something from a sound bar, not so robust.

Bought the Samsung Q90 Sound Bar, sounds so much better, no drops for a week now, cannot tell the difference between it and a real sound system

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Well, I helped him set up a gmail acct....I actually wanted to see what the new process is for setting up a gmail acct since it had been years since I set mine up. Anyway, I showed him how to forward the emails he wanted to keep over.

Hard getting used to the new younger Gibbs, Mark Harmons son had the right look but I understand he didn't want the role.
Still I'm enjoying, pretty good job with Franks.

Sorry, I got the shows mixed up, were talking Origins ...
I've liked Most of them once we've gotten past the 1st 3-4, getting to know who was who took a bit in the beginning.
It's a bit harder seeing we already Know the person, then go back and see how they became that person.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I just received 6 receiver 2 port mini Multiswitch and it work great, no external power need it, and you can connect 6 receiver instead of 4 on most Mini Multiswitches... If anyone is interested in where they can get one PM me....

Have you tested using external power? Over the years, have found unpowered polarity switching to be unreliable. Especially problematic when used with DiSEqC motors or switch stacking.
H
No I have not. I just got it the other day and it is connected to six receivers working just fine. What I do is non power mini multi-switches work best with LNBF's and with LNB's
H
It also has a IPS and a OPS switch on the side of it with a power led light showing when is on. It seems to be very nice build switch

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Can't help but wonder if a worker overlooked checking the harness. I rarely ride a roller coaster anymore but when I do I check the harness myself pretty aggressively.
Can't imagine what the son is going through.

Back on the Goliath Roller Coaster ... I'm interested to find more details as well ...
Like where on the track did this happen (somewhere I read that it was on the climb up the top), which is impossible ...

They really need to take that ride and add at the very least, seatbelts ...

The Park is opening back up on Friday, the ride will Not be opening ... personally, I would keep it closed until different type of restraints can be designed and installed (over the winter).

I find it hard to believe that this ride is even allowed to be running with the restraints that exist at the moment, there are other rides that use the same type and they have been shut down across the country.

You got to believe that every ride has at least 2 types of restraint systems in place.

I wonder what and when we will hear from the Manufacturer ... and whatever governing bodies control these ...

Just think, this is a Major Amusement Park .... I would not have any problem getting on the Roller Coasters I have rode ...

Imagine what these County Fairs and others like them, I would not be caught Dead on one of them ... they get put up and tore down every other week, where is the safety for those rides ... No Thank You.

Had no idea there were that many redundancies built into those restraints.

Had no idea there were that many redundancies built into those restraints.
It makes sense, however, I would want more types of restraints, so if one doesn't work, the other does ... the restraints coming over the shoulder I would have expected ... with a Seat belt as last resort.

Fwiw, I inquired with what they use on Coasters at Cedar Point, various Coasters, different restraints according to what the car and track requires ...

NONE of the Coasters at CP use THAT particular system :)
I'm glad to see ...

with a Seat belt as last resort.
According to the article, when you see a seat belt on a ride like this, it is basically used as a way of making sure the rider isn't too large/fat to safely ride the ride.
