I'm getting OLD!

I started in the early/mid 90's with the Ku band at our lake house. Kids always bitched about being bored at night during lake trips. I installed giant yagi's and bow tie type antennas but snow was the norm. Once they had consumer Ku band I jumped on it. Back then the number of available channels was awesome. You could always find a movie or show that would keep the family happy. If not they had hours of fun exploring the various channels even though most were crap.

Don't remember the names/model#'s of the receivers I had but when HD became a reality I know I had the only Dish receiver that got HD and the only channel was NASA. Beautiful space footage but pretty much nothing else was HD. Might have been around 99'ish.

The advancements made in the last 20 years are incredible. So happy I was an early adopter.

Had to be the 5000 with the 8VSB HD module that slid in the back.

Was that the module that:
  1. Is still working even without a sub to Dish?
  2. Had only component HD outputs?

The 5000 had an OTA tuner that would work without a subscription but it was SD only and was meant to integrate locals into the STB and guide. It was released before locals were offered as a way to have a seamless experience between locals and satellite. It was pricey so there weren't many out there, this was back in the days when you had to purchase the equipment.

The 8VSB module that plugged into the back of the 5000 connected to the OTA tuner of an HDTV and sent a modulated HD signal over standard coax to channel 3-1. It was quirky but I was impressed they managed to cobble it together. Then the 6000 came out and there was finally a true HD receiver.

I'll take that as a "Yes". Or do you mean to say that the built-in SD tuner was the only one that you could use after you un-subscribed to Dish?

What do you mean by use after you unsubscribed? I think I might know where you're going with this.

You mean the same thing I do, to this day, with a deactivated 512, to keep track of the free preview channels? ;)
By the way, if NASA was the only channel available in HD back then, it was probably in the clear, even on deactivated receivers. I know for sure that the SD feed was in the clear, but now no longer is.

There was a trick a long time ago with the first generation or two of smart cards. If the receiver was removed from the data stream before the deactivation hit was sent, after a couple of weeks they would stop sending the hit. You could plug the receiver back in and all the channels would continue to work indefinitely. No need to try this today, quit working almost 20 years ago!

Now even if you have a valid subscription, keeping the receiver out of the data stream will deactivate it and you'll need to wake it up with a rehit.

I meant that you could still view the OTA channels even though the receiver was obsolete and no longer subscribed. Am I using the wrong words?

You can still do that today, even with non-obsolete receivers. OTA is my main use for my deactivated Hopper Duo these days. Earlier this year, I hooked up a ViP211k that had been disconnected and stored in a closet for over two years. It surprised me that this ViP211k still worked for the OTA channels and some free channels on satellite (the "What's On Dish?" slate channels) without needing a re-hit. Normally, that would not be the case.

iirc that was the 811, but I'm not sure though.

Oh I had no idea. For a few years there if you didn't have service, they'd disable the OTA tuner. Do the DVR functions on the Duo still work?

Thanks! That explains why the old receivers that I got from my sisters after they each cancelled Dish (in around that same 20 year ago time frame) still worked for all of their programming when I hooked them up to my dish. I wanted to get my programming activated on them, though (Dish did not yet carry locals in Columbus, Ohio where one of my sisters had her Dish account) so I still called Dish to get them activated on my account. The weird thing with one of them is that when I first hooked it up, it would only work for the audio music channels. It was one of the models that needed a software upgrade to get interactive apps, I think a 3800. I let it take the software download (making it a 3900) and at that point it immediately started receiving my sister's entire programming package.

Yes, I had the Bell Expressvu equivalent (their model 6100) and that is exactly how it behaved, even after my Smart Card expired and I could no longer get a replacement Smart Card through my broker.

Yes, they do. In fact, they work better on my account when the Duo is deactivated. Whenever I activate the Duo, Dish keeps adding the "D" code to my account to deactivate the DVR functions. There is a special phone number that I can call to get DVR service back after activating the Duo, but that is a hassle, so I don't usually do that. I mostly only activate the Duo when I want to watch something live from the satellite channels (Live TV is all the Duo will let me do while it is activated) and I need an additional receiver active because all tuners are in use on my other receiver. The Duo, when activated, will also still let me play existing recordings, but without the ability to pause or skip, etc.

I detailed these issues in another thread, for anyone who is interested. That thread started out about my Wally, but then I started having the same issue with my Hopper Duo.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

Even if you are broadcasting old SD-only shows, I would think advertisers would still want their commercials to look good.

Advertisers on SD channels are probably Far and Few, very hard to find, they have very few viewers to watch them.

I watch mostly SD channels (H&I, Start and ION, etc.). There are plenty of advertisers, this time of the year it is mostly Medicare Advantage plans, auto extended warranties and the occasional walk-in-tub. They know who is watching.

Why didn't Charlie end up launching starlink
Because he didn't have a fleet of reusable rockets. Starlink works because SpaceX is able to launch hundreds (thousands?) of their Starlink satellites for what a single geostationary Internet satellite costs to build and launch on a disposable launcher.

But how is it reusable if it's disposable

He does not have the resources aka $$$ compared to Elon Musk as in reality, Elon can eat Charlie for lunch or even mop the floor with Charlie if he wanted to.

Also watched part 2 about a week or so ago after rewatching part 1. It's not as faithful to the book as I was hoping for. Part 1 stayed fairly faithful to the novel, but part 2 took some liberties that I felt were rather excessively non-novel. It looks like a prequel series will happen before part 3. My issue is: there's no prequel that was written as a novel, so what will it be pulled from? Or will it just be "based loosely" on the novel?

There is a bunch of other Dune written by Kevin J Anderson and Brian Herbert (Franks son). I think the series in production is taken from one of their books about the Bene Gesserit.

Correct. I've read all of them (yes, it took awhile, better part of a year, in my spare time). And they can't really consider or classify a series about the Bene Gesserit as a prequel. Sure, I suppose they can call it that, if they want to, because it begins before the time of Paul Atredies, but it's still a stretch. It's a Dune-related novel, not a prequel as we generally think of prequels...
long_time_Dish
Well, it looks good! I just hope they stayed close to the trilogy, but it doesn't look like it.
