Has anyone heard anything new about the new DISH equipment?

It could allow for multiple streams of more linear "streaming channels" instead of those channels being up-linked. Just about every linear channel on cable/sat, and even OTA digital nets, has its channels available for streaming via the internet, so this could do two things for Dish:

1. Allow for more content/channels for Dish subscribers to access.

2. Less reliance on satellites and perhaps the eventual conversion, over years, to Dish and Sling being merged as ONE streaming service, and no need to launch new satellites.

FWIW, in the short run, I would not be surprised if DirecTV sells or leases one or more of its DBS sats or sell its licenses at 119 & 110 to Dish because the new people RUNNING DirecTV--being one of those Equity--Uh, strip the assests and sell for the cash--companies would just LOVE to turn DirecTV assets into instant CASH. They would not consider Dish a competitor, but, instead, the only entity willing to give it CASH for its some of its assets.

Interesting theory and it's certainly possible that Dish plans to offer more linear channels via streaming. But why couldn't they do that with the current hardware? Those boxes (if internet-connected) can already access certain linear channels that are streaming-only, such as some of the recently-added HBO channels.

Only reason I can think why they'd be switching to hardware with an "Android UI" as these new units have is because they want access to apps from Google Play. All over the world, we're seeing pay TV operators move toward one of two OS platforms for their boxes: Google's Android TV Operator Tier (which, for instance, DirecTV Stream uses on their boxes) or RDK (an open-source framework that's largely backed by Comcast in the US and Liberty Global in Europe). RDK is mainly being used by traditional cable operators while Android TV is being adopted by everyone else, particularly IPTV/telco/fiber operators.

It could be the current, say H3, was not designed with optimization for handling several high quality streams from the internet to multiple clients. The new equipment would, in theory, be able to do this with far more streams, far more reliably, and with the latest more bandwidth rich MoCA 2.5 that offers 2.5Gig (up from MoCA 2.0's 1Gig that is the MoCA used for the H3).

All the latest tech in a new box means a truly robust, highly capable, mega-multistream of channels from the internet with far more bandwidth of MoCA 2.5 to provide a solid performance with far less hiccups that customers would expect. Trying to do this on a grand scale with the now older tech H3 would just create a diminished and frustrating experience. So, such an add-on component that works with the H3 is probably a more cost effective way or "upgrading" the H3 and the H3 experience. Keep in mind the Roku's and Fire TV's are designed to be CHEAP and, therefore, have limitations such as MULTI-streaming. Dish needs a far more complex box that likely will attempt to mimic the current MVPD experience, but designed to work WITH a Hopper or other latest models of Dish sat boxes to achieve this.

Eh, maybe, but then nothing you're stating there has anything to do with the description "Hopper DVR upgrade for Android UI". Being able to process multiple streams doesn't require Android and doesn't have anything to do with a UI. Assuming the existing Hopper 3 isn't powerful enough to handle multiple simultaneous streams (which I doubt), it's going to need beefier hardware, e.g. faster SoC and/or faster network connection, not an Android UI.
jerryez
Maybe these new Hopper products are designed to work with the Directv signal, since the current Hopper and the Directv signal are not compatible. That way when Dish and Directv merge, Dish would already have a Sat receiver to replace Directv's Genie and it may also work with Dish's current signal. A dual signal receiver.

Well, we know is pretty much next to NOTHING! What we do know is Anroid "TV" and UI and this certainly means streaming, and that's it. After that, any speculation is just as likely as anyone else's.

Android ("TV"?) is a FOUNDATION, not indicative of anything other than OS and possibilities of UI that could be Dish's own along with the ability of streaming content. After that, companies are NOT limited to offering a host of features and innovations and purposes.

So, what you seem to be saying is that only knowing the new add-on device to be running Android OS of some kind (but could be Android TV that can provide for CUSTOM UI and functionality much like a Hopper 3's UI and functionality), there is no need to speculate. I would say since we know only the above, that makes almost anything possible. Than again, even those known things could be in ERROR or even abandoned by Dish, so I guess that puts us back to your square ZERO :) on any speculation. Of course, is that not what speculation is, in the first place? That last sentence is what is called a rhetorical question; please, save your valuable time and energy and don't it feel necessary to respond to a rhetorical question.

I should add that earlier this year, I had read a well done reputable article about how Starlink has no chance of making any money (nor breaking even) with only rural customers, and the its only hope of solvency is in providing a competitive option to urban and suburban dwellers, and even then, the economics will still be very tight. I can't recall the article, but perhaps a G search may bring up for those who are interested.

I read that same article and it totally ignored the deals Musk is already working on and the potential for more-Airlines , Government ( Local, State and Federal), Military .

Do a search on Star Link and a lot of these deals pop up, too many to list here.

No, speculate away. All I'm saying that is the description available ("Hopper DVR upgrade for Android UI") doesn't seem to have much to do with the features you're speculating about, although that doesn't mean you're wrong. IMO, it seems much more likely that it's talking about incorporating Google's Android TV operating system into their Hopper line-up (which already feature the Google Assistant, BTW). And the main reason DISH would have to do that -- the main thing Android TV has going for it that DISH currently lacks -- is access to a large ready-to-go platform of popular streaming apps via the Google Play app store.

The Hopper currently has apps for YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video and Pandora that those companies have made specifically for DISH. But Android TV has tons of additional apps, including HBO Max, Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, Peacock, Paramount+, ESPN, AMC+, etc. Getting all those services to create and continually support a version of their app just for the Hopper is a long, drawn-out process and many of them just won't ever do it; they're already supporting lots of other platforms. Injecting Android TV into their receivers immediately solves the problem for DISH and lets them effectively catch up to Comcast's X1 system in terms of app support and integration. The Hopper platform is a standout, technology-wise, versus other pay TV operators' equipment. Having so few apps is its only real shortfall.

Who knows, maybe you're right about this shift involving an increased reliance by DISH on delivering linear channels via streaming, and therefore less reliance on satellite delivery. Maybe at some point after this new equipment rolls out, we'll see DISH begin offering service completely via the internet, with no need for a dish or professional installation. It's an interesting idea (although raises the question of why have Sling as a separate service). We don't have much to go on other than the short description -- "Hopper DVR upgrade for Android UI" -- and it's certainly possible that that description doesn't fully reflect the scope of features/changes that this new Hopper Plus will bring. We'll see eventually, I guess...

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.

That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Take a look at this weeks teams and tell me how you determine the Top 10, let alone the Top 24.

Were going to have maybe 1 undefeated team Miami ... they played No One so far, if they get by Notre Dame they will have at least played 1 good team.

There are a bunch of ok to good teams, none that are head and shoulders above the rest, like usual, Bama, Georgia, Ohio State some years, ND some years ... none are good ...

Buckeyes would be there, but lost thier QB, they may still be good, we'll have to wait a few games and see how the Freshman Qb takes over.

UCLA is up there in the Good category this year ... whens the last time we said that.

BYU thought they were the Top team (#2) when they beat ND, but turned around and lost the next week.

People complained when they had Blow outs in the small Playoffs the last few years, what are they going to say when we have 8 or 12 Playoff games that suck ?

The playoff told us rankings are pointless. Lesser ranked teams were winning playoff games. Ranking the top 24? Rank it the same way as normal. It'll consist of at least four or five of each cartel's teams, other conference winners. The field will be fine, the sorting will be problematic and arbitrary, but in the end does it matter?

It'll matter when OSU or Alabama have to face a decent upstart squad due to being ranked midway in the listing, or goodness help us, each other. But thanks to arbitrary rankings, that should be easily avoided by design. Then the cartels will need to fix the rankings a bit so the top dogs can have a bye or three to help prevent those untimely eliminations from the playoff.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

Well, I didn't immediately think of broadcast, where there are all kinds of digital "subchannels"- I remember back when digital broadcast began that supposedly the 6mhz channel would likely support just 1 HD program and that the added subchannels would likely have to remain SD. I don't watch enough broadcast to know. Are there a lot of the subchannels in SD-only, and how do they do that, like are they in 4:3 or some kind of low-res widescreen?

New more efficient encoders. I think there's around 60 channels/sub channels now in the Tulsa dma. 480 widescreen for most of the sub channels, but some have 2 HD channels and a couple of SD sub channels while others have 1 HD and 5 or more SD sub channels. If they moved to mp4 or hevc encoding they could do higher bitrates for SD or more HD or even 4K in that 6Mhz channel. That could render some early digital tvs unable to tune though as they may not have the codecs for that. Considering 4K tvs have been on sale for years, I think it would be a very small minority of TVs with the problem. I'd rather see that happen and keep ATSC 1 than continue the move to a DRM enforced ATSC 3 world.

Many of us have used a universal LNBF mount (or get creative with L brackets and plumbers tape - perforated metal strapping). Use a few inches of aluminum tube (or a piece of 1x2" lumber) to extend the support arm (replacing the plastic mount used by DirecTV and Dish) to place the LNBF throat opening at the correct distance from the reflector, the correct height and at the correct angle. Nothing magical... simply place the new linear LNBF in the center at the same distance, height and angle as the current combo.

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.

When you need a battery, you need a battery.

If you can wait, new technologies are on the not-too-distant horizon.

You're probably doing something wrong if you're only getting a year out of an AGM battery. Heat and infrequent charging both significantly reduce lifetime.

Huh? How can I be doing something wrong.....I took out the original battery, that was 6 yrs old and put in a new one.....kinda hard to screw that up. I figure it was just a bad battery....it happens.

The biggest takeaway I got from this video was the Walmart batteries only had something like 85% of battery life left even though they were brand NEW. The ones from O'Reilly all tested 100% of life left.

I just had to replace a car battery this week and thought I'd look into LiFePo4. Amazon has plenty of them, but all have top posts and only one 'also' has side connections (Group 75).Then I read that they're really lousy in the cold. So, an AGM, but again, almost nothing with side terminals instead of top. In researching that, I read that most mfrs in recent years have dropped side terminals and gone back to the old top posts, which is surprising to me since those are more corrosion-prone, cause the battery to need more space and are generally more hazardous. Finally I just threw up my hands and bought a regular lead-acid at Sam's Club. They had a Group 75 "Duracell" with side terminals only. It was virtually the only such battery with side posts on their shelves

Flooded acid batteries like a float voltage of around 13.5-13.8 voltage.
AGM needs a float of 14.2 volts. So if you slap an AGM in where a flooded was. It never gets a full charge.
"Why do they die so fast?" Question answered. There are folks who sell voltage regulators for alternators that are designed to boost float voltage for AGM batteries.
The other way around? Flooded will gas-off a little at 14.2 volts. But seems to tolerate it pretty good.

Lithium car/bike/atv batteries. After 3 batteries in my Harley. The OEM flooded and two AGM's (before the 14.2 volt float requirement to let them live was learned). I bought a lithium for it. 4 year, no gripe warranty after having it tested by an approved store.
The thing started like Thor himself sent a bolt from the sky. Except......try to start it around freezing? Nope. Needed a heating pad.
And I usually like to park it around events in the evening with the parking light on. Looks cool like that.
We could traipse around for a few hours no worries. Hop on, fire it up, and go putt around.
Lithium? A Dakota Lithium at least. The BMS shuts it right down if it discharges below <something>.
Come back. Parking lights off. Won't start. And you know the rest. But it lasted 6 years. A lot better than 'new every two'. And the fact that powersports batteries are warranted for six, maybe nine months. Ludicrous.

I called Noco. Asked all of the right questions. Great warranty. Save some bucks ordering directly, faster service that the wally world alternative.
They addressed (or claimed over the phone) that the shut down was addressed. Sure. The BMS keeps it form being damaged. But if it is shut down because it does become low. Shut down any load (key on, parking or headlights left on) for 10-15 minutes and you get a second try to start your rig. Not a bad thing if it really works. Right?!

Exide, Interstate? Be very afraid. They ain't what they used to be. In Florida my '70 Cutlass had an Interstate (early 90') that lasted 6 years until it dropped its plates at an intersection and boiled over. In Florida, mind you. The last Interstate.....done in 2. Guys down there would suck out the acid and put water in shortly before the warranty ran out. Make it to the auto parts, get them tested. And get a new one pro rated. No more pro rating.
You can't beat an Odyssey. Napa, AC Deco (the better ones). Yup.
The mom and pop Car Quest only sells Die Hard. For a reason, the old man says. So they convinced that a Die HArd Platinum was the hot ticket for me. l will see. Stand by!

You can't cut Mr. Project Farm down. He does great tests of all sorts of things. Not sponsored and pressured to slap a little sugar on his comparisons and reviews. Compared to the Brits and Aussies with their constant overzealous and same sounding (Dave from EEVblog) rant. I like P-Farm a lot. Of course I like AvE (Boltr) too.
Reminds me to beware when wearing shorts around the garage vice.

Opinions may vary.

And the Walmart ones mostly had very little warranty.
The days of the 84-month warranty appear long gone, regardless of brand or where you acquired it. Warranties tend to be shorter, with much greater dependence on quick prorating.

The big problem for lead-acid batteries (whether flooded or AGM) is that the US no longer produces lead (the last smelter closed in 2013) and must import it.

Recycling covers a good chunk of the need (~70%), but it isn't free.
