I live in the mountains of Western Massachusetts near the NY border just under 40 miles from (east of) the transmission towers. I have mountains in front of me (in relation to the Albany, NY tower) and the sides of me and directly in back of me. I have been working on OTA setup and am posting what I have done and asking a question at the end. I also posted this in the local AVS Forum for the Albany, NY HDTV DMA, but I figure there are smart people here who don't go there, so I came here also. Here is my Rabbit Ears info: RabbitEars.Info. I guess they don't update TV Fool anymore?

I kind of let my OTA setup go dark a couple years ago when I had to rebuild a wall on the side of my house that my OTA cable came through and I hadn't gotten around to running another cable from the antenna into the house. As luck would have it, my DISH Network satellite dish sits about 10 feet from my OTA antenna setup and I had 4 RG-6 lines going from the dish into the house through an eave and snaked down to my basement right near where my OTA dead Channel Master 7777 preamp (now replaced with an updated nearly identical model) and amplified splitter route my OTA out to the rooms of my house. So now my Sat dish is down to one wire (soon to be two when I install a second Hopper 3) so I repurposed one of the Sat lines to OTA. I got it working but was only able to get WRGB Channel 6, which is by far my strongest and most reliable OTA station. I haven't been able to play with it again until this week. I decided to take a small 24" Vizio TV that someone recently gave me over to my sister's house in Troy, NY where they have a small outdoor OTA Yagi antenna installed. I scanned 56 channels there pretty much everything available because they have no mountains in their way. My idea was to have the channels scanned in so I could use it as a reference to see what I might be able to pick up and it worked pretty well. For my OTA setup I have a Winegard HD8200U and an Antennas Direct XG91 stacked on the same 10 foot mast on a tripod on top of my roof at the peak, which is about 25 off the ground. That would put the top of my mast at 35 feet off the ground. My house sits at 1350 FT above sea level. In the past I have gotten most of the Albany channels reasonably watchable although dropouts and blockiness did occur except for Channel 6 (RF 6 from the Albany Tower [AT]) and CW 45 (that I got from the Jiminy Peak translator 1.6 miles to my southwest) which were both rock solid.

I decided to try to connect each of my antennas in their current configurations to see what I would get on the Vizio. My HD8200U has always been aimed just about directly at the AT and my XG91 has been pointed directly east of my house and at a slight angle up into Brodie Mountain where I was getting the UHF signals to bounce back to me. At the time I was also picking up CW 45 off the back of the same antenna on RF 19 off the WRGB Jiminy Peak translator. That translator is now RF 5. So I started with VHF and connected the HD8200U directly to my Vizio that I brought up on the roof with me. I cycled through the VHF stations 1 at a time and was only able to receive Channel 6 loud and proud. I decided to tune to Channel 13 and see if I could pick it up by rotating the antenna one way or the other. I tried about 10 to 15 degrees in each direction with no luck. So I decided to just keep rotating to see if it would make any difference and believe it or not, when I got to the direction pointing to Jiminy Peak, about 100 degrees left of the direction of AT I got locked steady signal on Channel 13! It locked on and stayed on steady with no dropouts. So I tried 23 and I got locked signal on it! Then I tried 51 and sure enough I got a locked steady signal on that!! Did I mention I love VHF? Well maybe not. So I figure I'll tune to Channel 6 and see if it works there too. No joy. Had to turn all the way back to face AT to get 6 back. Oh well onto UHF. So I decided to take my HD8200U down off the mast and carry it all the way to the other side of my roof about 45 feet away to avoid interference I had the XG91 at the top of the mast with the HD8200U about 5 feet below that on the mast. So I hook up the XG91 and tuned to Channel 10 (RF 24) and nothing, not a whiff of signal. I tried 17 (RF 25) and same thing, not a whiff. Tried aiming directly at AT, no joy. So I put up my 6 foot step ladder to check out the balun. Something seems really loose. So I take down the antenna (not easy because of rusted nuts) and discover that the coax cable was barely screwed onto the F connector and the balun was hanging out the back of its box. So I take that all apart and fix it up and put it back on the mast. I'm still tuned to Channel 10 but really getting nothing. So I start rotating slowly back and forth in the direction I know I have gotten UHF signal in the past and finally I got a faint quick hit of signal. Yes! The antenna still works. I tried Channel 17 too but wasn't getting any bites. I decided to go get another section of mast and lift the antenna up another 5 feet for a total of 15 feet off the roof, which I really didn't want to do because at that height I would have to guy it. It wasn't windy today so I decided to try it. So I'm up there at 15 feet and I seem to be getting signal but nothing really watchable. I tried that for a while, but really didn't get it to improve. So I decided to take the mast down and take the 5 foot section back off and connect the XG91 to it and try walking the roof with it to see if I could find a watchable UHF signal. So I connect it back up with the short mast sitting directly on the roof and the antenna at about 5 feet off the ground ready to start walking when I notice I have a solid steady signal of channel 10. It was pretty good. I decided to see what would happen if I took the slight elevation off the antenna and just have it level and that locked it up nicely. So I tried Channel 17 and I got a watchable picture on 17 too. I decided to cut my losses and just put the antennas back on the mast and see what I get.

So I decided to try putting the HD8200U at the top of the mast so that I could leave the XG91 down at the 5 foot level to try to avoid multipath from the antennas. I did a quick check and all VHF channels (6, 13, 23, and 51 all came in perfect at the new height, but again 6 came only in the direction of the AT and the others came in only in the direction of Jiminy Peak. So I decided to go in the direction of Jiminy Peak hoping that I would also get CW 45 off the translator, which carries Channel 6 on 45.3 and try another solution later to try for Channel 6. I hooked up my replacement Channel Master Antenna Preamp. Cut equal lengths of RG6 coax for each run from each antenna to the preamp and pressed on new terminals. I tidied up the wiring and connected the existing house feed coax from the previous satellite wire and began the arduous task of dragging all my tools and ladders back off the roof. I took my Vizio TV down to the basement where my CM preamp plugs in and where my splitter farm is and hooked everything up down there (except the splitter) and did a scan for channels. I got Channel10 with its subchannels, Channel 13 with its subchannels, Channel 17 with its subchannels, Channel 23 with its subchannels, Channel 45 with its subchannels twice!! (assuming RF 5 off the Jiminy Peak translator and RF 22 from AT), Channel 51 with its subchannels, and Channel55 with its subchannels!! Seemingly quite a success. Now I just have to figure out a way to get Channel 6. Would it be possible to get a third antenna up on my mast, maybe one of those small RCA Yagi's that might pick up Channel 6 and put a combiner in to see if it works? 6 has always been my strongest station. Or is it not worth pursuing?

I emailed KTVM and this is the reply I got back:

Thank you for contacting us. As of right now it will be several years before we move KTVM into the UHF band. The new technologies that are on the horizon do not function well in the VHF band and that is why a lot of broadcasters will be moving in the next several years. That being said, the FCC requires that we submit engineering data that shows we will not significantly change our coverage area. This will be achieved by significantly increasing our power level. For example it looks like we will be moving from an output power of 4KW to an output power of 1MW. This should be enough power to cover our current VHF footprint. I hope that this answers your question. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.

The two low band VHF signals appear to be strong enough to be received, but interference usually takes more signal margin than UHF.
Step one is to eliminate any possible source of interference to see if it is causing any problems. I would do this two ways;
1. tune your car radio to 530 or 540 KHz and drive past the house and listen for buzzing and note if the buzzing changes while you drive. If you hear buzzing, that is power line noise and might vary depending on the humidity and/if it has rained recently. Power line noise is best cured by the power company.
2. turn off every circuit in your house except the one for you TV set. Next unplug everything else on that circuit except for the TV and the preamp power supply. If the reception improves, turn things back on one at a time until you find the bad one.
Once you have eliminated interference, the next step gets you to improving the signal strength of the signal. Your idea of a second antenna might do the trick, but before you go that far, you can try moving the existing around to see if you can find an optimum spot. Here in the Adirondacks I have seen low band antennas several feet off the ground in a side yard. The optimum location will vary on your terrain. The goal is to find a height that uses the ground in front of the antenna to reflect the signal upwards toward the hill that is blocking the signal.

Thanks, that is helpful. I'll try some of those suggestions.

WRGB will complete their move from VHF6 to UHF35 hopefully in the next 2-3 weeks. You should get WRGB along with the other Albany UHF's off Jiminy Peak when that is completed.
david_jr
Thanks djbrian. I guess I will be able to re-aim my 8200 at Jiminy Peak to pick up the channel 5 translator. That is the only channel I'm not getting right now with my 3 antenna setup. I do get the UHF version from Albany, but there are a lot of dropouts. The Jiminy translator is a mile from my house and line of sight. When Channel 13 moves there won't be much left on VHF.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.

That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Take a look at this weeks teams and tell me how you determine the Top 10, let alone the Top 24.

Were going to have maybe 1 undefeated team Miami ... they played No One so far, if they get by Notre Dame they will have at least played 1 good team.

There are a bunch of ok to good teams, none that are head and shoulders above the rest, like usual, Bama, Georgia, Ohio State some years, ND some years ... none are good ...

Buckeyes would be there, but lost thier QB, they may still be good, we'll have to wait a few games and see how the Freshman Qb takes over.

UCLA is up there in the Good category this year ... whens the last time we said that.

BYU thought they were the Top team (#2) when they beat ND, but turned around and lost the next week.

People complained when they had Blow outs in the small Playoffs the last few years, what are they going to say when we have 8 or 12 Playoff games that suck ?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

Well, I didn't immediately think of broadcast, where there are all kinds of digital "subchannels"- I remember back when digital broadcast began that supposedly the 6mhz channel would likely support just 1 HD program and that the added subchannels would likely have to remain SD. I don't watch enough broadcast to know. Are there a lot of the subchannels in SD-only, and how do they do that, like are they in 4:3 or some kind of low-res widescreen?

New more efficient encoders. I think there's around 60 channels/sub channels now in the Tulsa dma. 480 widescreen for most of the sub channels, but some have 2 HD channels and a couple of SD sub channels while others have 1 HD and 5 or more SD sub channels. If they moved to mp4 or hevc encoding they could do higher bitrates for SD or more HD or even 4K in that 6Mhz channel. That could render some early digital tvs unable to tune though as they may not have the codecs for that. Considering 4K tvs have been on sale for years, I think it would be a very small minority of TVs with the problem. I'd rather see that happen and keep ATSC 1 than continue the move to a DRM enforced ATSC 3 world.

Many of us have used a universal LNBF mount (or get creative with L brackets and plumbers tape - perforated metal strapping). Use a few inches of aluminum tube (or a piece of 1x2" lumber) to extend the support arm (replacing the plastic mount used by DirecTV and Dish) to place the LNBF throat opening at the correct distance from the reflector, the correct height and at the correct angle. Nothing magical... simply place the new linear LNBF in the center at the same distance, height and angle as the current combo.

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.

When you need a battery, you need a battery.

If you can wait, new technologies are on the not-too-distant horizon.

You're probably doing something wrong if you're only getting a year out of an AGM battery. Heat and infrequent charging both significantly reduce lifetime.

Huh? How can I be doing something wrong.....I took out the original battery, that was 6 yrs old and put in a new one.....kinda hard to screw that up. I figure it was just a bad battery....it happens.

The biggest takeaway I got from this video was the Walmart batteries only had something like 85% of battery life left even though they were brand NEW. The ones from O'Reilly all tested 100% of life left.

I just had to replace a car battery this week and thought I'd look into LiFePo4. Amazon has plenty of them, but all have top posts and only one 'also' has side connections (Group 75).Then I read that they're really lousy in the cold. So, an AGM, but again, almost nothing with side terminals instead of top. In researching that, I read that most mfrs in recent years have dropped side terminals and gone back to the old top posts, which is surprising to me since those are more corrosion-prone, cause the battery to need more space and are generally more hazardous. Finally I just threw up my hands and bought a regular lead-acid at Sam's Club. They had a Group 75 "Duracell" with side terminals only. It was virtually the only such battery with side posts on their shelves

Had a Die Hard in my folks cellar for over 6 years. Pulled it out, slapped it on a charger for a day. Put it in my 'Cuda and drove it around for a week of my vacation. Next year, the same. But my dad kept it topped off for me.It was a mid 80's battery in early 1990.

Flooded acid batteries like a float voltage of around 13.5-13.8 voltage.
AGM needs a float of 14.2 volts. So if you slap an AGM in where a flooded was. It never gets a full charge.
"Why do they die so fast?" Question answered. There are folks who sell voltage regulators for alternators that are designed to boost float voltage for AGM batteries.
The other way around? Flooded will gas-off a little at 14.2 volts. But seems to tolerate it pretty good.

Lithium car/bike/atv batteries. After 3 batteries in my Harley. The OEM flooded and two AGM's (before the 14.2 volt float requirement to let them live was learned). I bought a lithium for it. 4 year, no gripe warranty after having it tested by an approved store.
The thing started like Thor himself sent a bolt from the sky. Except......try to start it around freezing? Nope. Needed a heating pad.
And I usually like to park it around events in the evening with the parking light on. Looks cool like that.
We could traipse around for a few hours no worries. Hop on, fire it up, and go putt around.
Lithium? A Dakota Lithium at least. The BMS shuts it right down if it discharges below <something>.
Come back. Parking lights off. Won't start. And you know the rest. But it lasted 6 years. A lot better than 'new every two'. And the fact that powersports batteries are warranted for six, maybe nine months. Ludicrous.

I called Noco. Asked all of the right questions. Great warranty. Save some bucks ordering directly, faster service that the wally world alternative.
They addressed (or claimed over the phone) that the shut down was addressed. Sure. The BMS keeps it form being damaged. But if it is shut down because it does become low. Shut down any load (key on, parking or headlights left on) for 10-15 minutes and you get a second try to start your rig. Not a bad thing if it really works. Right?!

Exide, Interstate? Be very afraid. They ain't what they used to be. In Florida my '70 Cutlass had an Interstate (early 90') that lasted 6 years until it dropped its plates at an intersection and boiled over. In Florida, mind you. The last Interstate.....done in 2. Guys down there would suck out the acid and put water in shortly before the warranty ran out. Make it to the auto parts, get them tested. And get a new one pro rated. No more pro rating.
You can't beat an Odyssey. Napa, AC Deco (the better ones). Yup.
The mom and pop Car Quest only sells Die Hard. For a reason, the old man says. So they convinced that a Die HArd Platinum was the hot ticket for me. l will see. Stand by!

You can't cut Mr. Project Farm down. He does great tests of all sorts of things. Not sponsored and pressured to slap a little sugar on his comparisons and reviews. Compared to the Brits and Aussies with their constant overzealous and same sounding (Dave from EEVblog) rant. I like P-Farm a lot. Of course I like AvE (Boltr) too.
Reminds me to beware when wearing shorts around the garage vice.

Opinions may vary.

And the Walmart ones mostly had very little warranty.
The days of the 84-month warranty appear long gone, regardless of brand or where you acquired it. Warranties tend to be shorter, with much greater dependence on quick prorating.

The big problem for lead-acid batteries (whether flooded or AGM) is that the US no longer produces lead (the last smelter closed in 2013) and must import it.

Recycling covers a good chunk of the need (~70%), but it isn't free.

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

The title was to catch everyone's eye lol! But it is a thought I've been having as I dev a Roku app for a client. You see many MAAANY years ago I got really interested in cable TV channels and even chatted with a regional carrier, Insight about what it took to get a channel number. It was surprisingly easy although prohibitively expensive.

You could petition, reserve a high channel number, they monitored performance and if they liked you, you'd get lower channel number overtime and cut into ad overlays.

Roku has a similar setup. Make an app, if it has a strong, original linear component you could get channel assignment on The Roku Channel.

As mixed as my feelings are on the current media landscape, I can't help but feel a little excited interest when I scope out the apps in the Roku store.

Hmmm. I think Roku will last. But will Firestick? With their backing, I guess so. Apple TV STB? Of Course. Walmart? Seems someone ought to go, but with their backing?….

Off brands have, as probably expected, very short lives.

All of those services have FAST Channels. FAST is a linear online broadcast stndrd. You notice how their linear channels all have some overlap? They are gettting paid for every second those streams are up without really having to do their own accounting. Best part is they don't even facilitate any of the stream bandwidth. Over glorified app stores on some android hardware. No reason NOT to stay in the game.

It is largely because of the standard Roku remote that channel numbers are a distant memory on the streaming side of things. Because their competitors followed suit only reinforces that they were right.

Linear TV's death is a direct result of DVRs giving you what you wanted when you wanted it; why go back?

FAST is uniquely popular as a way of saving money. It isn't so much about consumption as passing time.

Don't know if any of you have watched this series yet, it would be interesting to see if you feel this review was accurate. It was very humorous to listen to however.

If the review is like the article, oi! Eighteen paragraphs into the review and... all they've done is not really talk at all about the actual thing they are reviewing.

Halfway into the "written" review, I know more about how the writer "thinks" than I do about what they are writing about. I understand their politics, their self-overestimated understanding of film, their inability to be funny.

Takes about 22 paragraphs to get to one that starts "Anyway, the story kicks off...". Talk about Slop! 😂
