Here in Chicago, Comcast raised the rates again. I look back at my December 2021 post where the RSN fee went up to $17.30 and local channels went up to $19.75.

Starting this week, the new RSN fee is $20.25 - even though there is no Chicago Sports Network (credits of $8.85 are still being applied). The local channels is going up to $29.10. In 3 years, the increase is almost $10.00 on just locals.

Makes Dish's $14.00 for locals nothing compared to Comcast.

It is now being reported the RSN and Broadcast fees, is going up for all Comcast Markets.

Which, along the packages and other fees, that will go up sometime in 2025 ( Dish just had a bill increase a few months ago).

And folks here question me why I am so adamant about about streaming.

When you can get all the streaming services that have the majority of content that is on paid Live TV, plus movies, the streaming only content, including HBO and Showtime, no commercials, 4K, all for $70-80 a month, I am amazed that Cable/Satellite are not losing more then the 8 Million that left last year and will this year.

$treaming i$ going up in price too. Catching up, I daresay. Without providing as good of a DVR experience.

Although I must admit, most of my DVR'd Dish stuff is gone, due to unexplained Dish actions. I -MIGHT- recover some of if I get off my butt and find those Linux directions to try and copy to a larger HDD.

Side note: ATSC3 just might put paid to OTA, at least in any recognizable semblance to what we have today. And no doubt, that will please some.

I wonder if NPT and NPR will be around in the next couple of years, as we now know them. I expect a loss of funding, but I recall an analysis from many years ago that showed due to such a self selected, well off, audience, they could make it with REAL commercials. They skirt that edge pretty close today. {MODS: If you deem this "political" please just delete this last paragraph.}

It is not even close, when I get Paramount, Peacock, Hulu, Disney, Showtime, HBO(MAX) and Netflix, all in the no commercials/4K tier, pay about $80 a month, I basically get 20 times the content that is on Traditional Paid Live TV.
Without providing as good of a DVR experience.
With the on demand streaming services, I have no need of a DVR, plus the fact I do not have commercials, no need to REW/FF, I can, just no need.

I have also never understood having 100's of hours stored in a format that is so prone to failure, plus the fact that same content never seems to get viewed, you are paying $150 a month for a digital locker you never open.

Your assertion/assumption that the prices for streaming won't make a similar jump in the future is questionable.

Consider how quickly Max got to $21.

My assertion is based on a long-established history. Streaming price increases have been mostly unpredictable but when they do happen, they tend to be more than 10%.

There you go again using useless percentages that mean nothing. Talk dollars and cents for the cost of satellite/cable vs streaming.

Talk dollars and cents for the cost of satellite/cable vs streaming.
The bottom line is not a particularly good metric as it is composed of multiple component costs that change more or less at random.

Also, the subscriptions come and go as well based on running out of desirable content or the expiration of promotions so it is necessary to conjure up some form of multiplier (a percentage) that describes what to expect overall. This is where the time spent maintaining the overall TV toolbox enters into play.

On the other hand, if cost isn't the primary concern, it is rather academic to discuss how it changes,

i say be careful with what people wish for with atsc 3.0 because more than likely it will be the end of free t.v.

Agreed. That is a real possibility.

The way things are going, I don't think we have much to be afraid of in the foreseeable future given the fumbling by the proponents of the standard and their inability to provide content that is more compelling to drive its adoption.

The big station groups tried to back into making NextGen TV a standard by getting the public on board but that's getting worse with every announcement. DTV had a huge battle with adoption when there was a legislative mandate. I don't believe anything less will suffice.

Maybe it is time for DVB-T to be given some consideration.

This should fact check anyone who says YTTV pricing is becoming like Cable TV-

Comcast, one of the nation's largest cable and internet providers, is facing backlash from customers as it prepares to implement a series of price increases across its TV and internet packages, while simultaneously reducing a key autopay discount. The changes, set to take effect in the coming weeks, will see some customers' bills rise by as much as $16 or more per month, adding to the growing financial strain on households already grappling with inflation.

According to internal documents and reports, Comcast is raising prices across the board, impacting various tiers of its TV and internet services. The popular "Select" TV package, which includes a TV box, will jump to $60 a month, up from the current $53.50. The "Ultimate" TV package will see an even steeper increase, rising to a hefty $126.25 per month before fees and taxes. With RSN fees and Broadcast TV fee it will now cost over $161 a month for TV or $1,935. Other fees will be added to that including a new higher device fee for each extra cable TV box.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Well, I helped him set up a gmail acct....I actually wanted to see what the new process is for setting up a gmail acct since it had been years since I set mine up. Anyway, I showed him how to forward the emails he wanted to keep over.

Can't help but wonder if a worker overlooked checking the harness. I rarely ride a roller coaster anymore but when I do I check the harness myself pretty aggressively.
Can't imagine what the son is going through.

Back on the Goliath Roller Coaster ... I'm interested to find more details as well ...
Like where on the track did this happen (somewhere I read that it was on the climb up the top), which is impossible ...

They really need to take that ride and add at the very least, seatbelts ...

The Park is opening back up on Friday, the ride will Not be opening ... personally, I would keep it closed until different type of restraints can be designed and installed (over the winter).

I find it hard to believe that this ride is even allowed to be running with the restraints that exist at the moment, there are other rides that use the same type and they have been shut down across the country.

You got to believe that every ride has at least 2 types of restraint systems in place.

I wonder what and when we will hear from the Manufacturer ... and whatever governing bodies control these ...

Just think, this is a Major Amusement Park .... I would not have any problem getting on the Roller Coasters I have rode ...

Imagine what these County Fairs and others like them, I would not be caught Dead on one of them ... they get put up and tore down every other week, where is the safety for those rides ... No Thank You.

Had no idea there were that many redundancies built into those restraints.

It makes sense, however, I would want more types of restraints, so if one doesn't work, the other does ... the restraints coming over the shoulder I would have expected ... with a Seat belt as last resort.

Fwiw, I inquired with what they use on Coasters at Cedar Point, various Coasters, different restraints according to what the car and track requires ...

NONE of the Coasters at CP use THAT particular system :)
I'm glad to see ...

According to the article, when you see a seat belt on a ride like this, it is basically used as a way of making sure the rider isn't too large/fat to safely ride the ride.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Scott, I was having major issues getting connected around noon ET. Looks fine now. I captured a Safari session that was showing high CPU utilization in the Rendering of the page, like 90+%. I have a JSON file I created that I could share.

Yeah. It's probably something going on with the MacBook as my iPhone has been pretty snappy.

I just received 6 receiver 2 port mini Multiswitch and it work great, no external power need it, and you can connect 6 receiver instead of 4 on most Mini Multiswitches... If anyone is interested in where they can get one PM me....

Have you tested using external power? Over the years, have found unpowered polarity switching to be unreliable. Especially problematic when used with DiSEqC motors or switch stacking.
H
No I have not. I just got it the other day and it is connected to six receivers working just fine. What I do is non power mini multi-switches work best with LNBF's and with LNB's

I bought the fixed color version of these bulbs for my store several years ago...work great and no more replacing ballast. Finally had one go out and when I went back to Amazon I saw that now they come in selectable versions so no more guess work as to what color light would do best in a certain area. They are now double OR single ended...used to be strictly one way or the other. If any of you are looking at replacing the old style 4 or 8 ft bulbs, you might want to give these a try. The 8 footers are BRIGHT. I put 5 in my shooting/target shed and you can get a decent tan if you are in there long enough.

When we re-lamped my in-Laws' house for sale last year, we were able to get all the Edison bulbs and a few fixtures with switch-selectable Color Temperature. We tried a few and settled on 3000°K as the best fit for the house. Matching the lighting in all the rooms made for an inviting experience. The Shop was the only place that we went with 4000°K for the LED 4' fixtures.

The house was sold within a month of going on the market, so we must have done something right.

The other advantage is if the new owners decide that they prefer a warmer light, they can unscrew the bulbs (I think it was close to 70 bulbs) and set them to the 2500K/2700K settings.

I'll have to check these out. Thanks!
