Hello All,

I'm curious about something that I've been researching furiously here on SatelliteGuys and across the internet, but to no avail. I figured that someone here might know the answer.

I've been using satellites 119 and 110 with a "moved" address in New York, NY for the last ten years (and no, my physical address isn't in NY). The beam for 129 doesn't cover the area where I am, so I've just had to make do with what I can get (I have great signal strength on both 119 and 110, so this post isn't about that).

I was looking at the LyngSat website recently and noticed that the New York, NY locals were listed as CONUS in HD on tp32:

Dish USA on Nimiq 5 at 72.7°W - LyngSat

I have a dish that I haven't been using (I used to have it on 61.5, but the signal strength was poor, so I quit using it), so I figured "what the heck", and pointed it at 72.7 over the weekend. I'm getting good signal strengths (50) with tp32 (the main one that I was concerned about, since that is where the list has the New York HD locals). However, even after doing a "Test Installation" and updating the Guide, my Hopper 3 still only shows the NY locals in SD (and yes, the Hopper 3 is showing that 72 is now present, and I can scroll through the transponders and see the signal strengths).

I figure that this is probably due to one of several reasons:
  • The LyngSat list is wrong
  • Those channels are only available for RV users, based on this thread from over 10 years ago: New York HD Locals on Conus?
  • I have a mixed arc conflict (I've had experience in the past when mixing the two arcs that for some reason, apparently the receiver is programmed that if it thinks that a channel is supposed to be on one of the satellites, but the signal isn't strong enough to actually receive it, that even if it is coming in fine on one of the other satellites, the receiver will refuse to display the channel, and the only way to get the channel back is to remove the satellite with the poor reception. That is the reason that I had to abandon 61.5 - I lost Velocity Network - now Motortrend - and couldn't get it back until I quit looking at 61.5 - it was coming in great on 110).
  • Or of course, some other reason that I am unaware of
Does anyone have any idea as to why I'm not seeing the HD New York, NY locals, even though I have a strong signal on tp32?

Thanks,

ScubaGuy

Considering that as an active, mobile, full time RV'er, I change my service address as often as daily, I don't think Dish pays a lot of attention to it these days. Even before I could change locations with the MyDish app, it was never a problem making the changes. It just took longer. The CSR's never said I needed a truck roll once I explained I had an RV and the billing address stayed the same. I know other folks sometimes just claim the move is for a summer home or similar.
Ah yes, there's the key - you're an RV'er. I guess that I could try and claim that I've "moved" to another home, but the major question is whether they would feel that a tech needs to come see my setup. They expect that you know what you're doing when setting up your dish, but might not think that anyone else does. Maybe I shouldn't be so fearful, but I really don't want my service cancelled (my wife would be very upset if she had to start streaming everything - we're not all into the "cord-cutting" phenomenon - she very much likes to just turn on the TV and scroll through the guide to find something to "watch" while doing housework).

No, you shouldn't be! I don't think your account will be cancelled. The worst they could do is move you back to where you really are.

I don't post here often, but every time that I do, so many of you try to make a game out of guessing where I am. I find that humorous. Especially since it doesn't matter at all when it comes to answering my question. And no, I'm not going to say (because it doesn't matter).

It does matter - but assuming the address on your account is correct, and you're not knowingly committing fraud (spooky locals fraud), for HD locals from New York you need orbital 61.5 transponder 22.

The service address on his account is within the NYC DMA, but his physical location is not. He can receive the NYC locals in SD on the 110 and 119 CONUS beams. There are other DMA's available in HD on CONUS beams.

That would be considered fraud. A DMA being transmitted over a CONUS beam does not entitle every customer to watch it.

Do not continue to rile the Dish people, they can make it harder for all movers. An argument simply not worth the effort...
E
I heard long ago that it was technically not illegal for the consumer to use locals that are not from his designated area, but it was a severe violation to some FCC rule or to the contract Dish holds with local channel providers for them to willfully provide someone with locals to somewhere else. So us users have nothing to lose, while Dish has it all to lose. This also explains/prevents Dish from providing you with locals from your neighbor DMA during a dispute for example.

Wholeheartedly agree here, don't make it harder for them. They probably know a few people do this, and know its not worth the trouble, but if we start attacking people without knowing the full picture then we end up with no Dish employees to help us out on the forum when we need it.

I think there is a rule on that as long as your home address does not change, you are allowed to use DANY or other services while away. But you have to check-in at your home address once in a while to verify you live there. For Hulu LiveTV its once every 30 days, and for YTTV once every 90. No idea what rules Dish follows, if they follow that rule at all.

Since we're never at our billing address and never have been, I know Dish doesn't use that for any verification. And our service address changes quite often, so I'm not sure what Dish would consider our "home" address. I don't have Hulu Live or YTTV, but I wonder what they , or Dish, use to verify where you are?

When DISH had the big decision against them many years ago and lost the right to have Distants it was because they were giving them out without proper verification. People could tell them anything about their location and got them. For a time more than one set. Oh, to have those days back....

Anyway, DISH and only DISH was responsible for that, not the subscriber that gave wrong information. What did DISH do before the that decision they could no longer offer them?** Terminated the Distants to those who should not have them. As the user agreement says.
And the difference here is, there is no financial gain. Is it fraud for paying for entertainment you are not supposed to get a mistake by the company giving it to you in how they give them?
Do people here think DISH is not fully aware, just as they were all the years ago, that some people are getting locals they are really not supposed to?

**Charlie out did himself at that juncture. He got a company that offered Distants onto DISH and THEY gave you Distants. At that time a service that was not your provider, did not carry your locals, could give you Distants. Courts upheld he could do that.
One of the great FU's of all time to the FCC.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

The number-one US state for EV growth, according to the June 22 Yardi report?
Oklahoma.

:eek

It has no ZEV mandates and "minimal" incentives, Yardi says, but also has cheap electricity, high multi-car household rates (so, for example, a non-Lightning Ford F-150 pulls their trailers), and a consumer base willing to switch.

Never realized that Tesla is losing to BYD at manufacturing too, which IMO is Tesla's biggest accomplishment and area of innovation. Nice writeup about the state of play and how we got here though. I have no faith that we're moving any productive direction though sadly, most changes and efforts feel reactionary rather than rooted in making use of the time being bought by tariffs, with few exceptions.

So: how are the cars so cheap, and what is being cut to get there? The best public accounting comes from the Rhodium Group, which compared BYD, Geely, and Leapmotor against Tesla's Chinese operation, a fair comparison because it removes labor costs and shipping from the equation entirely. Their estimate is that BYD builds a car for about $4,700 less than Tesla builds a Model 3 in Shanghai, roughly 15 percent of the Model 3's price. The breakdown is the interesting part. Direct government grants account for about $292 per vehicle, which is 5 percent of the gap. The biggest single factor is vertical integration: BYD makes about 80 percent of its top-tier components in-house, against 37 percent for Tesla, and that eliminates roughly $2,369 per vehicle in supplier markups. Lower overhead, meaning cheaper engineering talent and administrative cost spread across enormous volume, accounts for another $1,719. And BYD pays its suppliers on 155-day terms, against Tesla's 60, which is worth about $214 per car in float. When people say the Chinese advantage is subsidies, the per-vehicle number says otherwise. When people say it is slave wages, the Tesla Shanghai comparison says otherwise too. The advantage is mostly that BYD decided, twenty years ago, to make its own batteries, its own motors, its own power electronics, and its own semiconductors, and Western automakers decided the opposite.

GM said its next-generation vehicle architecture will provide 40 times more computing power and 30 percent less wiring than before and will expand from the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ to its high-volume SUVs, trucks, crossovers, and fourth-generation EVs, which will be powered by lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic batteries

Despite the politicization and perceived consumer pivot away from EVs in America, GM needs to remain globally competitive, so it's doubling down on its fourth generation EVs, with energy-dense, cheaper-to-manufacture LMR batteries, more efficient motors, and state-of-the-art centralized computing architecture. With a stated goal of cutting the traditional four- to five-year concept-to-production time in half, GM is clearly challenging the concept of "China speed," which in the Chinese automotive industry can be as quick as 18 months from design to start of production. In the AI space, GM is smartly collapsing all of its marque-specific apps under the familiar OnStar brand, while providing more features—both on the phone and in the car—than it ever has before.
harshness
Let's tell it like it is. GM's EV efforts are coming from SAIC. The brain trust is almost entirely in China, and GM is hanging off of SAIC's shirt tails.

It is a lot like asserting that the Corvette was designed by Chevrolet when most of it came from the Cadillac CTS-V.

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.

When you need a battery, you need a battery.

If you can wait, new technologies are on the not-too-distant horizon.

You're probably doing something wrong if you're only getting a year out of an AGM battery. Heat and infrequent charging both significantly reduce lifetime.

Huh? How can I be doing something wrong.....I took out the original battery, that was 6 yrs old and put in a new one.....kinda hard to screw that up. I figure it was just a bad battery....it happens.

The biggest takeaway I got from this video was the Walmart batteries only had something like 85% of battery life left even though they were brand NEW. The ones from O'Reilly all tested 100% of life left.

He sounds like he's trying to sell me a pocket hose.

I just had to replace a car battery this week and thought I'd look into LiFePo4. Amazon has plenty of them, but all have top posts and only one 'also' has side connections (Group 75).Then I read that they're really lousy in the cold. So, an AGM, but again, almost nothing with side terminals instead of top. In researching that, I read that most mfrs in recent years have dropped side terminals and gone back to the old top posts, which is surprising to me since those are more corrosion-prone, cause the battery to need more space and are generally more hazardous. Finally I just threw up my hands and bought a regular lead-acid at Sam's Club. They had a Group 75 "Duracell" with side terminals only. It was virtually the only such battery with side posts on their shelves

Now right up front....this is NOT intended to devolve into a "pot is good" vs "pot is bad" thread. The whole point is to make you aware of a potential problem that a person can develop when they start smoking pot at a young age. Not that they WILL, but CAN. Kinda like getting lung cancer from smoking cigs....some do, some don't. The purpose of posting this news story is to keep anyone from paying an outrageous emergency room bill......knowledge is power.
While this may not affect you, you might run into someone who is experiencing these symptoms and can share the info. Fortunately, it looks like stopping smoking is the cure and isn't a permanent condition.
