Hi.

I set up satellite for the first time ever a few weeks ago. So far basically so good - I think it's an improvement over streaming for motion in sports, though there is much to be said in comparing the two. Streaming definitely wins in many areas. We had YouTube TV for about 6 years, and although I understand why people like it (great interface & DVR, colors look good out the box or with calibration via Apple tools, better price, no signal dropout), I felt that the re-compression of an already bad signal was constraining motion in a way that did not look as natural or 'live' as satellite - a few weeks flipping back and forth between satellite & streaming confirms this to my eyes - it's subtle, but it's definitely real. The abysmal quality of broadcasts on events such as the NBA Playoffs on ESPN via ABC is not helped too much by switching to satellite, except for with regard to motion, which is very important for sports. I think YTTV has a very pleasing picture, but lacks a bit of detail or sharpness that satellite has, as well.

I have one basic question which is with regard to the question of signal loss. I had strong enough (though not perfect) signals that Solid Signal felt ok with activating - i'll post these below for reference. So far I have only had the grey screen signal dropout I think once, for half a second. Have been through a few decent rains as well, and haven't noticed any issues during the rain that I could directly connect to the weather event.

My question is - to what extent can (I don't know the exact terms for these effects, sorry) things like pixel 'blur'/pixelation be attributed potentially to the signal not being perfect? Not speaking so much about artifacts or obvious signal dropout (grey screen, big blocks), but just kind of a basic pixelated blur that seems to happen sometimes in fast motion sequences in movies, etc.

I am wondering if this is a result of imperfect signal, or whether is something else that may or may not be able to be fixed.

The reason I am wondering is that I am inclined to not try to 'fix what ain't broke' by tweaking the satellite more. I may do this anyway, but am more likely to attempt if I think it would help something like the milder pixelation I refer to.

I had the idea in my head that, like with a CD skipping, satellite signal loss would happen in 'chunks' (i.e. grey screen or obvious large-block pixelation) and not in more subtle pixelation, but I am not sure where I got this idea, or whether it's true. If any of you satellite longtimers know about this sort of thing, I'd appreciate any insight.

Here are my readings I noted during setup. I know not perfect, but deemed sufficient by some:

I am getting almost all 95 on 101 transponders (one 100, one 0, one 72, rest are 95-97 after dithering (I went into the signal meters for 101 satellite and tweaked each dial back and forth to see what highest % was I could get on tuners - 96 was tops).

99ca ranges from 82-90 on all transponders.

99cb ranges from 82-91 on all transponders.

103ca ranges from 72-92 on all transponders.

103cb ranges from 80-88 on all transponders.

The tuner readings range from 88% to 94% on those satellites.

I've never really taken any time to critically evaluate the quality of the satellite vs stream, but did so this afternoon. Equipment used was an HR54, Apple TV 4K, and LG 27EP950 4K monitor. Sources were sent to the same HDMI input using a patch cable. I have 200 Mbps cable internet.

Video/audio evaluation has been my life's work, having spent 40 years in television engineering. I'm very sensitive to motion issues, but didn't see any difference between the satellite or stream -- both looked equally fluid on video-based content. Overall, I gave the stream the edge in quality as it exhibited fewer compression artifacts. This was especially obvious with small graphics. On the satellite feed, small text was degraded in the way one might see in a photo with a high degree of JPEG compression. The text was sharper and cleaner on the stream.

Of course, as mentioned above, YMMV, but these are my observations.

It is interesting to hear your impressions as someone with so much experience in this specific field. I wonder what it is I'm perceiving. I know it's something! I think it could be as simple as a sort of a pseudo-blur effect created by edges that are less defined (an unintended consequence perhaps of algorithms that are both removing artifacts, as you say - which I agree with, but also perhaps creating softer edges and, resultingly, a sort of a blur/ghost effect). I would be really interested to hear any other impressions from those who have done comparisons or decide to take that on. The general word around the internet is that people are very happy with how streaming quality compares to satellite, with many saying it beats satellite - though many seem happiest with it for other reasons than PQ alone. But there is also a whole class of gripers about various aspects of streaming PQ (mostly around artifacts), and it's not uncommon to see people saying DTV satellite still beats streaming. Tonight I watched 3/4 of a baseball game on satellite and am now finishing it on YTTV (because DTV receiver went kaput) - there are marked differences - some very positive for YTTV to my subjective eye, but I would still say a slight net negative - one thing I noticed off the bat was up close shots are distinctively less sharp/clear on YTTV, though not bad looking. And whatever thing is going on with fast motion I do see.

The techs will only do jobs that fit "standard" scenarios. They aren't allowed to leave their ladder, they probably are only allowed to use ladders of a certain height, they are likely allowed or even directed to refuse installs where there are dangerous materials nearby like asbestos.

Unless he can put it on a pole in your yard somewhere that isn't blocked by trees (which the installer is NOT responsible for trimming!) you will have to hire and pay a third party installer or install it yourself.

If you don't like that, there are plenty of alternatives to Directv. Dish will have the same rules, none of the rest have to put up a satellite dish but if they have to cut into your exterior walls to run wiring inside I'll bet they don't let those guys drill into asbestos siding either (though if they don't know what it is their ignorance may allow you to skate by)

We are pre-wired - I wish Dish had been an option b/c I was able to get signal using a portable RV antenna before activating and finding out they don't have RSN's anymore (operator had told me they did). Plus it was no-contract & cheaper. Pole mount is what I ended up doing, so yep.

I did sign up for RSNs & sports outside of RSNs, and it had sort of crossed my mind that something like that might happen, but it's only a 2 year contract. Surprised some tech company hasn't scooped up all major sports rights yet. Cross that bridge when we come to it - it's hard to imagine that's not the direction things are going. I actually hope something changes because the quality of the broadcasts isn't really acceptable in this day and age. YTTV was exacerbating what was already seemingly a bad quality feed. Where are you reading about DTV losing RSNs/RSNs going under?

I don't know why anyone would keep cable at this point for things besides sports. Quality of motion isn't important for watching Pawn Stars or watching talking heads bloviate. If I want to see the 1993 film Kalifornia there are a dozen different ways to watch it that won't be grainy or pixelated, and there won't be ads. Cable news is toxic to our society, and seems to be on the decline. Getting satellite was just an uneconomical way to get what still seemed to be the best quality feed for me for sports. If DirecTV wants to survive they'd probably have to go through a lean (i.e. unprofitable) decade to rebuild their business, drill down on exceptional quality of sports broadcasts that streaming won't match, compete heavily on price, too. Hard to imagine that happening, but I hope it does. If you just want cable news you can get Sling for $40 no contract, no hassle.

Do you get the MLB package ?

Just before the season started, they were discussing IF games would actually be shown on the RSN's this year.
Some have confirmed they will THIS year, others haven't ben paid as of yet.

Its gonna be interesting.

I wonder what will happen. Did not get MLB package. Only reason we really have cable is for local sports & local sports in postseason (Warriors & Giants), maybe some tennis. There's a whole planet of young people on Reddit etc grousing about how hard MLB makes it to watch games - attendance & the sport declining because it's too expensive to even watch. I am pretty sympathetic to this - seems like in the past a lot of games were broadcast free locally iirc (could be misremembering). They watch pirated streams instead (I guess not too different from 'free' broadcast, to be fair). I see a team like NHL Vegas Knights is going to go to that model, surely to try to build a fanbase. On the flipside, you could see Warriors rights going for enormous $ as they are even popular in China. I don't know much about how this sort of stuff gets sorted out.
K
DirecTV will still provide the games, as they already had part time feeds ready to go in the 600s when Diamond's deadline to send payments to the Padres and Reds came down to the wire, along with the Guardians, Diamondbacks, Rangers and Twins who planned to invoke their escape clause if Diamond defaulted on another MLB team's payment. The plan for cable viewers was to have them air as regionalized MLB Network telecasts.

Also, only the Bally RSNs filed for bankruptcy. Even though Sinclair has interest in them, YES and Marquee are not part of the bankruptcy proceedings. The bankruptcy judge also stopped the Suns plan to leave Bally Arizona for Gray's AZ Family Sportsnet.

The AT&T branded RSNs that got sent to WB Discovery are being Zaslav'd with the rights reverting back to the teams after they pull the plug. The Golden Knights already struck a deal to air on KMCC in Vegas and other Scripps owned stations in their territory. The Mariners will probably get a chance to buy out WBD's minority interest in Root Sports Northwest if they want to keep it on air, or find a new broadcast partner. (This is not a bankruptcy situation, they're just among the many victims of Zaslav's tax writeoffs, like how he pulled the plug on a bunch of movies nearly finished with their post-production like Batgirl, killed the Degrassi and Boondocks reboots, refusing to air the already completed upcoming seasons of TNT's and TBS's scripted originals, purging series from streaming, linear broadcast and digital storefronts like iTunes so they no longer have to pay residuals, purging many international imports from HBO Max, etc)

The Comcast owned NBCS RSNs, including your Bay Area/California are safe as Comcast is the dominant cable operator in the areas their RSNs serve, although NBCS California will be losing the A's after they move to Vegas (where Cox is the dominant cable provider). The Spectrum Sportsnet stations are also safe as Charter is now the dominant cable provider in the Los Angeles area.

The team owned RSNs like SNY (minority owned by Charter and Comcast who both have cable systems in the greater NYC area), MSG, NESN, MASN, Altitude and the soon to be rebranded NBCS Washington are safe for now too.

So, what does that all mean for someone with the Extra Innings package to watch out of area teams ?
Would the EI package get whatever the team moves to feed ?
K
Yes, Out of Market rights are held by the leagues and they require that the teams and broadcasters supply their feeds to the distributors of those out of market packages (DirecTV, Dish, and In Demand for digital cable). That's why we are able get feeds of channels DirecTV doesn't carry like TSN, Rogers Sportsnet and NBCS Philly, and when they still had Sunday Ticket, DirecTV's ability to offer NFL feeds and program the Fantasy and Red Zone channels weren't in any danger whenever they had a dispute with Fox or CBS.

i.e. Back in March when Diamond was on the verge of missing their payment to the Padres, a dedicated PADRES channel appeared in the guide for a few days on channel 694-3 and even had the season opener scheduled on it. If Diamond didn't make that last minute payment, their games would have aired on 694-3 for in market viewers, and the feed would have been remapped to one of Extra Innings channels in the 700s every time there's a game.

Sorry for the late reply but for some reason I didn't realize there were replies in this thread. I blame myself.

Anyway, I have no doubt you're seeing SOMETHING, though exactly what I cannot say. That's what makes this an interesting hobby -- everyone is a little different as far as what they perceive. It could be real, or imagined, but if YOU see it, then it's quite real to you.

Over the years working in pro video field, it was always strange to see some kind of problem, point it out to others, they didn't see it. There was nothing you could to do to MAKE them see it -- it's just the way their visual perception was tuned.

That said, going back to your original question, the "amount" of signal you receive from the satellite isn't going to have an impact on compression artifacts, or motion. As was mentioned by others, it's basically an all-or-nothing kind of thing -- as long as you have enough signal to avoid going over the cliff (i.e. large blocks of digital breakup), there will be no visual improvement from "more" signal. Any compression artifacts you see are "baked in" during the encoding process prior to transmission.

I was bewildered with all the new DISH TV "Bonus View" channels, so I put together a web page table with all the info I could find. It's at:

https://anythingpeaceful.org/dishtv/DISH_TV_Bonus_View_Channels.html

Here's a partial screenshot of the table, as sorted by Channel Name. (You can click on a column header to sort.)

New low power station has been granted by the FCC and the new call leter is K33OB-D on RF ch. 33.

Will run at 15 KW ERP, this one runs from the Westside same location as KWPL-LD a HC2 owned station.

It's going to be aimed at eastern part of Albuquerque, so it's tightly focused beam pattern.

This new station is owned by Digital Network and what kind of programmings is unkown at this time.😎

Yeah, there are some diginets like Heartland, Retro, The Family Channel diginetworks that we already have here in this market and we don't need duplicates, but bring the new diginets on like the Rev'n, Karate Acton movies, different kind of music videos on the new station. :hatsoff2

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

EchoStar has filed with FCC for license and launch of the EchoStar 25 satellite at the nominal 110W slot.

------"At the nominal 110° W.L. orbital location, EchoStar is licensed to operate over 29 of the available 32 DBS channels (specifically channels 1-27, 29,and 31).3 Currently, EchoStar provides service over these channels from the 110° W.L. cluster utilizing the EchoStar 10, EchoStar 11 (in inclined orbit), and EchoStar 23 satellites; and from the 119° W.L. cluster utilizing the EchoStar 14 and EchoStar 15 satellites. EchoStar anticipates that EchoStar 25 will be ready for launch as early as the first quarter of 2026. EchoStar anticipates that EchoStar 25, a spot-beam satellite, will take over delivery of certain programming services from EchoStar 10 and 14. After launch and in-orbit testing ("IOT"),4EchoStar 25 will proceed directly to 110.0° ± 0.05° W.L. Once EchoStar 25 is placed into operation, EchoStar 10 will initially remain at 110.2° W.L. serving as an in-orbit spare and may ultimately be relocated subject to all appropriate Commission authorizations. EchoStar 14 will remain at the nominal 119° W.L. orbital location and serve as an in-orbit spare once EchoStar 25 begins service." -----

I can tell the new satellite is active... When I go to the point dish menu, here in Chicago, 110 TP 27, which is a Spotbeam, for me with the old satellite was in the signal strength 50's-60's, is now just fluttering between 16-18.

I just happened to find out that I won White Sox tickets for tomorrow nights game June 10th. Yahoo! I just picked up my tickets around 8 P.M. local time and it is kind of late planning I know but I am leaving here in just a few and heading up to Peotone to stay the night tonight in a hotel and be there for tomorrow night as well. Its 9:21 P.M. Central Time now. I am hoping to beat the possible thunderstorms and fog early this morning up there and the weather there tomorrow as well. I oh so hope they play and no severe weather! Anyways, I just unhooked my Wally receiver and my DISH Playmaker and I am taking it with me. Peotone is in the Chicago Locals market and with me having a DISH Outdoors account I can change it when I get up there. I will have a check when I get there and I can post and let you know. I can put the antenna on top of the roof of the vehicle and run a 12 ft. coaxial cable running through the trunk into the vehicle. I have a DC to AC converter in the vehicle and can bring my Cloner Alliance ViewPRO to use as a the screen. I may even watch a little TV throughout the evening as well and maybe a little WGN as well. I miss WGN. I use to watch the Cubs, White Sox, and Bulls games on WGN and listen to the news and Tom Skilling a bunch. I hated it in December of 2014 when it became a standard cable network only. This will be only my 2nd time since they became a standard cable network and now defunct and rebranded as NewsNation that I actually get to see WGN again. The only other time was in 2016 up in Chicago as well and they were a standard cable network here then and not available locally. I now need to get going. I will let you know later.

Well I made it safely to Peotone, IL and got checked in. Sitting in the vehicle right now and everything is hooked up and ran and locals changed through the App.

This is going to take awhile to post all of this and get all of this right so I am going to be looking up some info as I type.

Chicago has tons of channels! 18! To be exact all in HD.

Got to head up to my room and get some sleep. I will be here until late afternoon tomorrow before I head up to the game and will be back here after the game tommorow night and head back home Thursday morning.

Take care everyone and have a good night and a good Wednesday and Thursday. Probably won't be back on until Thursday.

This is really interesting. Thanks for posting the Chicago locals - I still can't add them to my account for some reason.

But what I find even more interesting is that you are reporting that some of the Chicago locals are on 110, TP 12. However, right now some of the national sports channels for the out of market sports channels are on 110, TP 12 as well. MLB Network Alternate, for example, is currently on 110, TP 12. And to my knowledge, the same transponder cannot be both a national ConUS transponder as well as a local spotbeam. I wonder if having both satellites active at the same time is causing some coding issue or something like that - for my receiver, it is as if it is checking one satellite, times out, then checks the second satellite for the signal strength.

No Problem! Glad I went and could help out but however I chickened out from the game tonight and I am back home. Didn't like the weather report I was seeing. Everyone in the hotel was talking about the severe storms. 75+ mph winds, golf ball size hail, and tornadoes done it in for me. You stay safe! I guess it isn't going to be very good and its suppose to hit between 3 and 6 PM. I gave away my tickets as I don't need damage to the vehicle plus with the weather like that not going and driving in Chicago that often it probably wouldn't be good driving when it is storming. I do think I made the wise choice.

I however am thinking about going somewhere over the weekend because this hot and humid air that were having will bring in relief after the cold front Thursday night and good weather is expected through the weekend. I don't know where I will head I am thinking State Park wise somewhere camping in a tent and brining my AC battery supply backup that works 36 hours on a single charge and can be charged in the vehicle and bringing the Wally, the antenna, and my Cloner Alliance ViewPro to use as a screen. Just to see what I can all get and to get away awhile. Where ever I go It will be out of market so I could get you their locals and Satellites and Spotbeams if you would like.

Just hoping we avoid the severe weather at my location tomorrow. It doesn't look good on that part but once it goes through excellent and more pleasant weather ahead.

And on what you said. Yes that could be an issue getting the locals activated that you are having problems with. 2 Transponders causing trouble one national and one spotbeam. Your receiver may not know how to handle it. Seems as if they likely will move those other sports channels to another satellite and/or spotbeam. More than likely the issue with my MLB Extra Innings as well. All these changes coming at once and they are trying to figure where to put everything and probably don't know where to put it all. I am sure it has the tech advanced people at DISH working overtime. Just wish they would hurry up and get it done.

Do you have an estimated date of completion by any chance?

Is ESPN News changing packages? I see on the lineup card that ESPN News is only available in Top 200 and above now. Is this accurate? Did anyone with Top 120 or 120+ lose ESPN News?

I think ESPN News shows "The Ocho" on weekends. Slippery Stairs, Pop-A-Shot, Dodge Ball, Roof Ball, Wisconsin Auctioneers Championship, and even competitive Microsoft Excel spreadsheet races are among the offerings.

Watch Lethal Weapon on Sundance!
America's dumbest and richest Housewives on Bravo! (funny, I never watched Bravo! WAAAAAAAY back in the day because I didn't like watching ballet. Then I never watched it because I didn't like trash television.)
See My Seven Ox Wives on The Learning Channel.
Watch The Fakumentury on Mermaids on The Science Channel.

It really is too bad this didn't happen to channels like TBN.
Up next on TBN at 8 PM, Speaking with the Lord Satan.

Cartoon Network and TCM are the only niche channels that survived the dumbening of niche channels. Of course, there are probably people that are old enough to drive, vote, drink (?) that were never alive when TLC was The Learning Channel.

But even the cartoon ch. has been struggling of late

Curious if you still have ESPN News on 142 right now with AT120 or AT120+. As of today, the Dish website no longer lists it on the public website for that package.
