Sean is 100% Correct About D* Picture Quality

I'm a recent convert (less than 1 week) to D* from Comcast. About 99% of the reason is NFL:ST in HD. I haven't gotten to try that yet, but compared to Comcast and locals OTA, the D* HD channels are far worse in quality.

Here in Little Rock, we had: INHD1/2, TNTHD, DISC-HD, STARZ-HD, SHOW-HD, HBO-HD, CINEMAX-HD and ESPN-HD.

I can say, without a doubt that the D* HDTV package channels we have are being starved for bandwidth and look sub-par compared to Comcast (Comcrap?). To read the posts in this forum and see otherwise reasonable people stand-up and defend this HD Picture Quality is quite saddening. Everyone must understand that there's way more to HD than just high resolution.

And the SD content quality... WOW. All I needed to see was the NFL Network on D* compared to Comcast. Many times on Comcast I was floored by how good NFL Network looked compared to the HD channels. Simply the best SD channel I had ever seen, PERIOD. Compare that to the NFL channel on D* and you literally want to cry. It looks like something you'd download off of Kazaa.

I'm not Comcast fanboi. In fact, I hated seeing my bill every month. But let's call a spade a spade here. D* PQ is medicore for most all of their channels (i'm withholding judgment on the NFL:ST stuff yet.)

But its not their fault and I don't blame them. They flew too close to the sun on wings of LIL channels. They don't have enough Satellite space to deliver their great channel selection AND make it look good. Bottom line.

After the NFL season, I'll probably end up suspending my account for 6 months and going with OTA until pre-season starts. Maybe then the birds will be launched and they'll stop choking their bitrates across the board.

I understand that OTA and some cable MSO's do not compress the signal, however, on most HDTV's our eye can not see any difference. So on a well calibrated TV it boils down OTA and some cable may have full bandwidth and maybe even higher resolution, but it's only specs, not any difference in visual PQ.

I have the highest respect for Sean (in fact, my company set up Sean's DIRECTV HD DVR system) and all of the SatelliteGuys members, you are a very knowledgable folks and I do not dispute what you see, but on my calibrated 60" plasma DIRECTV HD image quality is excellent and looks exactly ike ATSC and CableVision.

As a general rule HDTV's do not do a good job of rendering a SD image. Analog direct view CRT TV's display a far better SD image than any HDTV.

DIRECTV is a better service than just about all cable MSO and in the short, mid and long term DIRECTV will be delivering far more HD content than other multi-channel video providers. In most areas, DIRECTV has better pq, is lower cost per month and has more channels than cable carriers.

Funny Ken H. At AVS says he can see a difference between D*'s networkHD and OTAHD. Others can see more of a difference. Probably those viewing on 1080i sets. Theres a thread on AVS. :rolleyes:

As far as D* having better HD PQ there is no HD channel I can think of that D* has better HD PQ than most Comcast cable systems or Dish Network. That is gross misinformation.

My God even M. Cuban acknowledges the picture degredation recently calling it HDLITE. Heres a thread of a Civil discussion of it by some reputatable people. charper, surley you know better than most this is a forum, and the definition of a forum is a medium for open discussion, I for one have regurgitated nothing, what I state is what I see with my own two eyes, and to accuse it denotes a sign of over-defensivness, which occurs when deception is being attempted, or bad judgment (maybe your brain/optical center doesn't see the problems some of the rest of us obviously do, I mean do you think we are all sitting around figuring out ways to tell people PQ sucks when it doesn't?)

Are our observations automatically ficticious because you cannot see the problem?

It is fine that it(D* PQ) is fine with you, we are not trying to convince you that you should beleive otherwise, but it is NOT fine with some of us(heck it's really not a huge deal with me persae, I mean it's just TV, not the unification theory), and you telling us its black, when it's obviously white won't change that, iow, don't crap on my cupcake and tell me it's chocolate icing.

It's simple, mpeg2 is used to compress, why is compression used? to make room where there would not normally be enough, and to make room for more content, compression must go up, lossyness goes up, PQ goes down, also, mpeg2 is some pretty lossy compression, loss impairs PQ, end of story.

That is what you want to argue against? Are you sure you want to maintain that stance?

I probably would not have replied, but the way you worded your post, you make wide-sweeping accusations about people you don't even know. I mean really, what do you mean by "they", does "they" to you mean those that don't agree with you? And the salesman part of your post was quite evident "makes directv a clear winner"? Almost comical, the thread was never about packaging, or bundles, or cost, it is about PQ, clearly your post is a strawman argument at best, and down right insulting at worst.

You are going to the point of making accusatory, judgmental remarks over something you guys claim is not an issue, that just doesn't float much water, and does nothing for ones reputation.

P.S. As I typed this I am watching Cops on CourtTV, the night sky in their shots are so compressed its not even funny, every solid area(not just black, just black is the first thing the encoding drops as a loss as a function of its algorithym) is full of the grey compression 'blocks', no major PQ/compression issue..yea. right. The difference in our sides of the argument is that we are willing to state that you may not be seeing the same things for whatever reason, your side however just blasts us as "regurgitators".

Starlink Router question

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.

Can you recommend the best to cover all bases. NO BEEPS on certain channels 101w (NEWSMAX ,NEWS NATION), a clock that keeps working STEADY for timed recording ,solid unit with good lifespan. My Amiko died AND my Linkbox has NO Favorites Button and BEEPS on many channels. Picking up 105 west with a NEW SHED IN THE Way with 6 foot Cband ..95 percent quality ...unbelievable.

That's great!

Many people have all sorts of power bricks laying around. Provided the plug fits, and it's the right polarity and same voltage and the same OR higher amps, why not try another one IF the device you want to try it on doesn't seem to work right.

Some people just call them power supplies (which really isn't a good fit in this case), some call them "wall adapters" but it's an external power supply or AC adapter that converts (AC) from a wall outlet into low-voltage (DC) that an electronic device needs to run.

[Give us a summary of what you receive with a 6-footer. I'm very curious.]

Right now on C band getting 105w, a Mexican channel with 95% quality and I am near Detroit! I'm recording a TECHNO MUSIC FESTIVAL today from Mexico ..if you can believe it.....and yes that SHED is partly in the path so I'm puzzled. There are also christian channels on 105w.

105W has some very strong transponders. I received more than four transponders using a 41-inch dish recently. See here.

What supplements have you found that really helped your overall health

Didn't see a thread like this so I figured why not start one. This is about natural supplements. If you aren't into supplements, fine, but please let those of us who do want to discuss this discuss it.

The first one I wanted to mention has been a real life changer. I'm 62 and still do all of my own install work at my business....also do all the yard work at the house. A few years ago I started noticing that I was losing my range of movement, it was even getting hard to bend over and lace up my boots. Almost got stuck in an attic because I couldn't get turned around once the work was done. Didn't think much of it and figured with age comes stiffness that was only going to get worse as time went on.
It was then that I stumbled across a video which was discussing rotator cuff tears and why they were to prevalent these days. Turns out, the culprit is a simple deficiency in MANGANESE which is key in keeping your tendons flexible. Most anti-biotics strip your body of any manganese it might have had which is why certain anti-biotics, especially those in the Cipro family. I actually knew a man who had two tendons tear while on that stuff.
Went to Amazon and ordered some manganese. Now it took a while, it wasn't instant, but gradually I have regained all of my flexibility. I can bend over and touch my toes while standing with no pain and putting on my boots is no longer a chore.
Pretty cheap too. The bottle I ordered was a 200 ct for under $13. They said to take double the normal dose for the first month because most people are severely lacking, then go to one a day.

Andy it builds your bones if I had used it in my food all my life I would not have the joint issues I have there is 3 types of calcium only the one from real foods build better bones

I have taken this stuff for years to help my joints. Over 20 yrs ago my shoulder sounded like it had gravel in it when I rotated it. Started taking this and after a few months I had my range of motion back. I mentioned this product to a doctor and told him the results I had and he totally blew it off....said it was just a coincidence. This has no shellfish like most joint supplements.

IT FIXED my wife's shoulder and knee pain, I only wish I took it before I got into Sat in 83, that beat my body up, I'm still here I turn 85 on the 31th

Heres an article from the Akron Beacon ... seeing Six Flags has bought Cedar Point and Kings Island, they are included ...
I said earlier that Cedar Point doesn't use this type of seat restraint ... well, it does use it, But the difference is, the ones up here ALSO have the Over the shoulder restraint as well ... like I was suggesting that they should have used with the Goliath.

One of the new(er) one at Cedar point the Gate Keeper, uses the Clam shell .. I have rode it many times and have Mostly felt secure, that ride will stop you part way on the ride and you just hang, till the ride is ready to continue ... I typically ride the Front Car ... when its getting ready, you ARE hanging, in the car, looking down .... it would require 2 separate restraint systems to unlock at the same time to possibly get out of it.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - Paramount+

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

I'm surprised Walmart hasn't banned this guy from all of their stores. He has been on their CASE the past few months.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

I remember when a pound of coffee was 16oz. Now its 12oz, they don't call it a pound anymore and its three times the cost of the 16oz pound.

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

It's simple math. You take the price and divide by the number of ounces and come up with the price per ounce. I find it hard to believe that Walmart's computers can't carry out simple division.

The division isn't the problem, the inputs are. On the Starbucks pods, $9.22 @ $3.35/oz works out to 2.75 oz, but the box is 1.94 oz. So either the system has the wrong weight on file, or the unit price is left over from an older price of about $6.50 that never got updated. Garbage in, garbage out. Walmart's had unit-pricing data problems before, too - in 2024 they paid $1.64M to settle with New Jersey after inspectors found 2,000+ instances of unit prices using the wrong unit of measure.

Wrong unit of measure? Having a hard time believing that or were they conflating solid and fluid ounces (stupid US measuring system).

The first two coffees aren't off on the same amount, so likely the unit price is linked to some previous price. Now I have to *bleeping* double check more math? Does anyone check anything anymore? Bad enough in the professional world having to QA/QC a third party's work. Don't want to have to do that in the grocery store now too! Not with the absurd measures that are used in the US. Is that unit price for blueberries in ounces or pints...

First world problems, but man... argh!!!

Might want to watch this before you buy a new vehicle battery

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.
