Hey folks - I have a question and this is probably the best forum for it. I have a Sony STR-DN1080 receiver in my main HT location and as the driver for my outdoor speakers. It's about 7 years old and is only a middle-grade unit, but it serves me well overall. It has a Dish ViP211K receiver and several other HD boxes connected to it. There's a strange series of events going on with this system that I can't figure out, thought I'd tap the brain trust here first. In the early afternoons I often have one of several FM stations playing, originating from this receiver vs. streaming from another source. All other connected "boxes" are on standby. At approximately 1:20 PM almost every day, the receiver switches itself from FM to TV for no apparent reason; sometimes I get to switch it back to FM almost immediately, sometimes not. Then at approximately 1:35 PM the receiver switches itself completely off (standby), regardless of whether or not I had switched it back to FM. There is a "sleep timer" that I have set to Off, but I can't find any other kind of timer function in the receiver that would cause this to happen. I have read through the entire manual and also drilled-down in all the numerous menus looking for something that might be related but so far, no joy. The software is up to date. I don't think this "problem" existed at the beginning (faulty memory) but it has been rather consistent now for several years. Obviously it didn't bug me a lot since I'm only really digging into it now...but I now want to figure out what the issue is and solve it if possible.

Thanks in advance for any ideas...

Sounds like an HDMI-CEC issue. Make sure they're turned off on all devices. In Sony, it's called Bravia Sync.

I believe I have Bravia Sync turned on as 3 of my devices are Sony. If I turn that off, won't I then lose the "1 remote" option for shared functions like on/off, volume, etc.? Or is Bravia Sync redundant for the TV/AVR pairing since the same functionality is available through the ARC / HDMI 3 connection? Since most of my viewing originates in the 211K, I use its remote to control the AVR input (for "Sat" only) and volume on the AVR. And how do the 1:20/1:35 PM events factor in? No comprehensive remote controls here.
As part of the CEC protocol, the AVR switches to the input that generated the CEC-on event so that it can do its part in the HDMI "chain". Shifting to TV (through eARC) on the AVR is a pretty definitive sign that the TV (or an Android TV app running on the TV) is the source of the misfire.

What model Sony TV are we talking about?
The TV is a 7-year old, middle-grade XBR 65X900F and the BD player is a very inexpensive UBP-X700, chosen largely for its SACD capabilities.

I have added a few apps on the TV (that I rarely watch) like Smithsonian Channel (which I believe is now defunct), FNS, Fox Sports, Brit Box, and Tubi. Some newer ones might have been added with software updates? I see "My Tuner" that I know I didn't add and I don't think was there at the beginning? What's an "Andriod TV app"? I never use or added apps on the AVR or BD player. I'm not even sure the BD player is even connected to my network now.

Sometime after 1 PM today I'll turn off the TV and disconnect the ARC cable, then see what happens to the FM program at 1:20 PM...

Thanks again all...

What's an "Andriod TV app"?
It is akin to an Android app (phone, tablet) that happens to run on Android TV devices (streamers, TVs). The Google Play Store offers hundreds of them.

Thanks. I installed some apps on the TV as I mentioined above, but I don't know where they came from. It's been a while.

Interesting result this afternoon, closer but still not conclusive. At around 11:30 I turned the system off, unplugged the ARC cable at the TV, then turned on the AVR to my usual FM channel. Unfortunately I had to leave, but when I got home later the FM was still playing so the receiver apparently did not get any signals to change to TV or Off. Tomorrow I will make sure the ARC connection is restored and run the FM again with the TV off. If it cuts out, then I'll be nearly 100% convinced the CEC signal is coming from the TV, although why at those specific times remains a mystery for now. I say it's not yet conclusive because this phenomenon does not occur every day and I'm not sure if there's a pattern. I'll provide another update tomorrow...

That the AVR switches to the "TV" input is all the evidence needed, absent external sources connected to the TV.

There are no other active* external sources connected to the TV; it is connected only to the AVR via HDMI 3/ARC. I still have 2 other HDMI sources connected to the AVR (the disc players) but I doubt either is the culprit. I'll disconnect both prior to 1:20 PM today...

(*I do have 2 cables plugged into various TV inputs so I can connect older game consoles and camcorders, but neither of those cables are plugged into anything at this time.)
B
Today I was listing to the AVR's FM tuner as usual. I had detached all other HDMI sources. At approx. 1:23 PM the AVR switched itself to TV and I switched it back to FM. Then at about 1:26, it switched to Off (standby). So I guess that confirms that the change signals are coming from the TV.

Every time this phenomenom happens, the TV itself is Off (standby) and when the system switches to TV initially, the TV remains off. I wonder if it would still change itself at approx. 1:20 PM if I had the TV On at the same time while listening to FM? That will be my experiment tomorrow. I assume if the TV is still connected through ARC but unplugged from the mains, it would have no effect.

At this point I feel I've learned a few things and confirmed that the TV is the culprit...but otherwise I'm still at a loss. Are there any apps on the TV (factory installed and those I added, as noted above) that might be causing this?

A real headscratcher here...!

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Yeah. It's probably something going on with the MacBook as my iPhone has been pretty snappy.

I rebooted my MacBook Air and it's zipping right along. Sorry, but it was taking over 20 seconds to load pages, with the pulsing blue bars so it was munching on something.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Well, I helped him set up a gmail acct....I actually wanted to see what the new process is for setting up a gmail acct since it had been years since I set mine up. Anyway, I showed him how to forward the emails he wanted to keep over.

Can't help but wonder if a worker overlooked checking the harness. I rarely ride a roller coaster anymore but when I do I check the harness myself pretty aggressively.
Can't imagine what the son is going through.

Back on the Goliath Roller Coaster ... I'm interested to find more details as well ...
Like where on the track did this happen (somewhere I read that it was on the climb up the top), which is impossible ...

They really need to take that ride and add at the very least, seatbelts ...

The Park is opening back up on Friday, the ride will Not be opening ... personally, I would keep it closed until different type of restraints can be designed and installed (over the winter).

I find it hard to believe that this ride is even allowed to be running with the restraints that exist at the moment, there are other rides that use the same type and they have been shut down across the country.

You got to believe that every ride has at least 2 types of restraint systems in place.

I wonder what and when we will hear from the Manufacturer ... and whatever governing bodies control these ...

Just think, this is a Major Amusement Park .... I would not have any problem getting on the Roller Coasters I have rode ...

Imagine what these County Fairs and others like them, I would not be caught Dead on one of them ... they get put up and tore down every other week, where is the safety for those rides ... No Thank You.

Had no idea there were that many redundancies built into those restraints.

It makes sense, however, I would want more types of restraints, so if one doesn't work, the other does ... the restraints coming over the shoulder I would have expected ... with a Seat belt as last resort.

Fwiw, I inquired with what they use on Coasters at Cedar Point, various Coasters, different restraints according to what the car and track requires ...

NONE of the Coasters at CP use THAT particular system :)
I'm glad to see ...

According to the article, when you see a seat belt on a ride like this, it is basically used as a way of making sure the rider isn't too large/fat to safely ride the ride.

I just received 6 receiver 2 port mini Multiswitch and it work great, no external power need it, and you can connect 6 receiver instead of 4 on most Mini Multiswitches... If anyone is interested in where they can get one PM me....

Have you tested using external power? Over the years, have found unpowered polarity switching to be unreliable. Especially problematic when used with DiSEqC motors or switch stacking.
H
No I have not. I just got it the other day and it is connected to six receivers working just fine. What I do is non power mini multi-switches work best with LNBF's and with LNB's

I bought the fixed color version of these bulbs for my store several years ago...work great and no more replacing ballast. Finally had one go out and when I went back to Amazon I saw that now they come in selectable versions so no more guess work as to what color light would do best in a certain area. They are now double OR single ended...used to be strictly one way or the other. If any of you are looking at replacing the old style 4 or 8 ft bulbs, you might want to give these a try. The 8 footers are BRIGHT. I put 5 in my shooting/target shed and you can get a decent tan if you are in there long enough.

When we re-lamped my in-Laws' house for sale last year, we were able to get all the Edison bulbs and a few fixtures with switch-selectable Color Temperature. We tried a few and settled on 3000°K as the best fit for the house. Matching the lighting in all the rooms made for an inviting experience. The Shop was the only place that we went with 4000°K for the LED 4' fixtures.

The house was sold within a month of going on the market, so we must have done something right.

The other advantage is if the new owners decide that they prefer a warmer light, they can unscrew the bulbs (I think it was close to 70 bulbs) and set them to the 2500K/2700K settings.

I'll have to check these out. Thanks!
