Switch from cable?

Hello all,

I'm considering switching and the deals look pretty good (the 4 room/4 receiver deal from vmc), but I have some doubts...

Firstly, the comcast cable we currently have is terrible. That is, the reception is bad. I'm convinced that the number and quality of the spliters along with the > 10 year old wiring is the culprit. I am sure that the cable company will fix this if I complain. However, for less than the cable company price I can get twice the number of channels...

So, I have some general questions (for you knowledgeable guys) and would much appreciate a response (especially since the vmc website says that the 'dea' expires in just a couple of days):

*1.* My main question: How is it possible to rewire a house that already has wiring going through walls, in and out of basements, through half finished basement room walls, etc... etc... I can't imagine there be any way to run cables to 6 rooms without having wires dangling from ceilings to TVs, going in and out of walls, etc...

2. I'm assuming that a cable must be run from the dish to each reciever? What about dual receiver models? How are the slave tv's connected?

3. VCRs can still be connected and record programming, correct?

4. Assuming I get the 4 room/4 receiver deal, and purchase (not rent) two additional standard receivers (NO DVR), is there any additional "programming cost". That is, will the price still be exactly "$44.99"/month as listed on vmc's website (120 channels)? Are there any "hidden" costs (I'm guessing there will be a monthly tax of course).

5. How messy can the extra wiring get?

I'm sorry for the rather long message, but I'd rather hear answers to the above from actual customers rather than a sales rep.

Hi, I have a few more questions if you don't mind...

If you have a basement then they can run the wires into the basement up through the first floor, floors. Second floor will need to be wired from the dish through the outter wall into the room. You can pay extra to get all wires hidden in walls but it will be VERY expensive! I HIGHLY recommend you do NOT go through VMC! They are simply box sellers and you are going to get some DNSC or other goofball installer that they sub out to and you will most likely NOT be pleased with their work. Go to the Dish Network website and search for a local retailer in your area and you will get the same deal but they will do a much better install job. Plus if you need any service afterwards you have a local retailer who can help you out. Going through the Internet or Dish direct they will put you on a list and maybe you'll get a service call in a week or so. And you DO NOT want to use 10 year old wiring whether it's RG-6 or not! You need at least 2GHz. sweep tested RG-6 wiring and 10 years ago it did not exist! If the installers try to say it's OK tell them to leave! It will most likely work right away but the higher voltage that the DishPro receivers/LNBF use can not be tolerated by a lesser RG-6 wire and you will have wirng problems in the future!

What exactly is meant by "wiring done outside the house? Suppose the dish is on the house, and there are two tvs at complete opposite ends of the house...does this mean a wire will run from the dish to each opposite ends of the house (from the outside) and then two holes will be drilled into the house (at each opposite end)?

The RF output? Of what? Is there a RF output on the reciever that coax cables connect to?

Also, an extender is just a remote control type device that can be bought at any electronics store?

I still haven't quite given up on satellite yet, but I think satellite is mostly ideal for houses with few tvs. Otherwise, it can cost at or more than the price for cable. I'm still consider satellite now, but with only 5 tvs (2 dual receivers and 1 regular).

I resent that. Some DNSC's and RSP's work hard to do a professional installation. Don't stereotype. I've seen some nasty retailer installs too. Depends on the tech's work ethic.

Nothing is different with VMC, all they are is a faceless salesman.. I would suggest you talk to a person though, so you know what you're getting into with disclosures, additional fees, etc. VMC will make that the fine print noone reads.

The DHA promo covers 4 tuners.. Dish will ask you to pay for the 5th standard reciever and the additional DP34 switch to accomodate it. It'll work just fine. $99 reciever, $109ish for the DP34.

Say you have your 4 tuners running to 5 tv's (meaning the 5th will mirror another TV in the house) this is a cheaper alternative, a tech will generally charge 1 hour of labor, which flexes depending on the tech. (ours is $59/hr)

You'll get a salesman to say anything so you sign up.. a tech won't work for free. Depends on the tech, but I'll say he'll probably charge for the 5th tv mirror.

you're right. the second tuner works on a TV channel higher up (like in the 73 range) but it works on the same principle.

I have no problem purchasing the extra $99 receiver, but also buying a $100 switch is just a little bit ridiculous to me. Tack like $5.00 on per month, and it would be like cable company prices for 20 months (until the "value" of the switch pays for itself). This really isn't sounding like a good deal, unfortunately

I'm not really a cheap person, but I'm just trying to ensure that switching to satellite (in the end) costs less than cable. This really doesn't seem the case (with additional fees tacked on to the Dish prices being apportioned over some length of time), seeing that we currently have 6 TVs receiving cable - granted the reception isn't that great, but still..

So, the person on the slave TV will not be able to know which channel the TV is actually on? Example: You really want to know what channel the TV is currently on (what is being watched) for some reason. But, there is no way to see this, since the receiver is not in the room...

That's not what was meant... the DHA promo install will cover installing the 4 tuners that are part of the DHA package. If you purchase a 5th or wan't to mirror to a 5th TV, that would be beyond the standard install, and you would most likely have to pick up the tab for that.

Starlink Router question

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.

IS Amiko MIRA 3 any good ???
Can you recommend the best to cover all bases. NO BEEPS on certain channels 101w (NEWSMAX ,NEWS NATION), a clock that keeps working STEADY for timed recording ,solid unit with good lifespan. My Amiko died AND my Linkbox has NO Favorites Button and BEEPS on many channels. Picking up 105 west with a NEW SHED IN THE Way with 6 foot Cband ..95 percent quality ...unbelievable.

That's great!

Many people have all sorts of power bricks laying around. Provided the plug fits, and it's the right polarity and same voltage and the same OR higher amps, why not try another one IF the device you want to try it on doesn't seem to work right.

Some people just call them power supplies (which really isn't a good fit in this case), some call them "wall adapters" but it's an external power supply or AC adapter that converts (AC) from a wall outlet into low-voltage (DC) that an electronic device needs to run.

[Give us a summary of what you receive with a 6-footer. I'm very curious.]

Right now on C band getting 105w, a Mexican channel with 95% quality and I am near Detroit! I'm recording a TECHNO MUSIC FESTIVAL today from Mexico ..if you can believe it.....and yes that SHED is partly in the path so I'm puzzled. There are also christian channels on 105w.

105W has some very strong transponders. I received more than four transponders using a 41-inch dish recently. See here.

What supplements have you found that really helped your overall health

Didn't see a thread like this so I figured why not start one. This is about natural supplements. If you aren't into supplements, fine, but please let those of us who do want to discuss this discuss it.

The first one I wanted to mention has been a real life changer. I'm 62 and still do all of my own install work at my business....also do all the yard work at the house. A few years ago I started noticing that I was losing my range of movement, it was even getting hard to bend over and lace up my boots. Almost got stuck in an attic because I couldn't get turned around once the work was done. Didn't think much of it and figured with age comes stiffness that was only going to get worse as time went on.
It was then that I stumbled across a video which was discussing rotator cuff tears and why they were to prevalent these days. Turns out, the culprit is a simple deficiency in MANGANESE which is key in keeping your tendons flexible. Most anti-biotics strip your body of any manganese it might have had which is why certain anti-biotics, especially those in the Cipro family. I actually knew a man who had two tendons tear while on that stuff.
Went to Amazon and ordered some manganese. Now it took a while, it wasn't instant, but gradually I have regained all of my flexibility. I can bend over and touch my toes while standing with no pain and putting on my boots is no longer a chore.
Pretty cheap too. The bottle I ordered was a 200 ct for under $13. They said to take double the normal dose for the first month because most people are severely lacking, then go to one a day.

I have taken this stuff for years to help my joints. Over 20 yrs ago my shoulder sounded like it had gravel in it when I rotated it. Started taking this and after a few months I had my range of motion back. I mentioned this product to a doctor and told him the results I had and he totally blew it off....said it was just a coincidence. This has no shellfish like most joint supplements.

Can't help but wonder if a worker overlooked checking the harness. I rarely ride a roller coaster anymore but when I do I check the harness myself pretty aggressively.
Can't imagine what the son is going through.

Heres an article from the Akron Beacon ... seeing Six Flags has bought Cedar Point and Kings Island, they are included ...
I said earlier that Cedar Point doesn't use this type of seat restraint ... well, it does use it, But the difference is, the ones up here ALSO have the Over the shoulder restraint as well ... like I was suggesting that they should have used with the Goliath.

One of the new(er) one at Cedar point the Gate Keeper, uses the Clam shell .. I have rode it many times and have Mostly felt secure, that ride will stop you part way on the ride and you just hang, till the ride is ready to continue ... I typically ride the Front Car ... when its getting ready, you ARE hanging, in the car, looking down .... it would require 2 separate restraint systems to unlock at the same time to possibly get out of it.

Hassan Kariem, 42, was killed at the theme park in Austell earlier this month, after he was thrown from his seat on the Goliath rollercoaster. Four others were injured.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - Paramount+

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

It's simple math. You take the price and divide by the number of ounces and come up with the price per ounce. I find it hard to believe that Walmart's computers can't carry out simple division.

The division isn't the problem, the inputs are. On the Starbucks pods, $9.22 @ $3.35/oz works out to 2.75 oz, but the box is 1.94 oz. So either the system has the wrong weight on file, or the unit price is left over from an older price of about $6.50 that never got updated. Garbage in, garbage out. Walmart's had unit-pricing data problems before, too - in 2024 they paid $1.64M to settle with New Jersey after inspectors found 2,000+ instances of unit prices using the wrong unit of measure.

The first two coffees aren't off on the same amount, so likely the unit price is linked to some previous price. Now I have to *bleeping* double check more math? Does anyone check anything anymore? Bad enough in the professional world having to QA/QC a third party's work. Don't want to have to do that in the grocery store now too! Not with the absurd measures that are used in the US. Is that unit price for blueberries in ounces or pints...

First world problems, but man... argh!!!

You always have the option of moving to a country that uses a unit of measurement that better suits your needs.

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.
