Before everyone goes ballistic please read with an open mind. I decided to look at the two systems and see what value you would receive for your money. This is not about the games or each systems abilities. This only about the hardware.

XBOX360: $399

3.2 ghz 3 core processor
ATI 500mhz graphics processor
512mb RAM
Ethernet controller
wireless game controller
DVD player
20GB Hard Drive
Wireless Head Set
1080i max output

Playstation 3: $499

3.2 ghz CELL (8SPE) processor
NVidea 550 mhz RSX graphics processor
256mb XDR main RAM
256mb GDDR3 VRAM
Ethernet controller
Bluetooth Wireless game controller with Axis Sensing
Blu-Ray Player
20GB Hard Drive
1080p max output

Since we are now moving into parallel processing we cannot really determine if the CELL will be more powerful than the processor used by the XBOX360 until the PS3 comes out and we start seeing games on the PS3. And it is quite possible that the ATI graphics chip can do many things better than the Nvidea graphics chip. Once again the games will bear this out. But this is a discussion about price and value.

I have compared the two 20GB systems as they are pretty much equal in terms of hardware. You can not talk about the cheaper version of the XBOX360 because it does not have a hard drive nor does it come with a wireless controller. It is not fair to compare the more expensive PS3 because it comes with HDMI 1.3, a wireless Ethernet and a 60GB hard drive. This is why I have compared the two systems most like each other.

The PS3 comes in at $100 more and lets see the differances. Bluetooth technology, Blu-Ray (high def) Drive, 1080p output. That is it. Just three little things but are they worth the extra $100?

First the Bluetooth technology. What does it mean? Simply, an industry standard that means anyone can make a bluetooth controller for the PS3 easily. It also means faster response times. Considerably faster response times than the basic wireless controllers we have all been using and that is what is on the XBOX360. As a side note-- Sony is in talks with Immersion and we still might see vibration in the PS3 controllers. Personally I am very excited about the axis sensing. Imaging driving and flight games using this technology!

Second the Blu-Ray high def drive. Anyone with a High Def monitor will want one of these. You will be able to play High Def movies from your PS3. The movie studios have agreed to allow high def playback over the componet outputs for the next 3 to 5 years. It seems the copy protection of Blu-Ray is very difficult to break. That does not mean that it will not happen -- just that initially the movie studios are in agreement about allowing HD over the componets for now with Blu-Ray. This technology alone is worth the extra $100. There is no way Microsoft will be able to bring out a High Def drive for the XBOX360 for $100 without losing their shirt. We shall see.

1080p output. Is this really an advantage? I know this can be debated but progressive is definately prefered to interlaced -- especially when playing video games. Hands down this will be the best output you can view. And this brings me to an interesting part of this discussion.

These next gen gaming systems really do not start to shine until you hook them up to a High Definition TV. Lets face it, hooked up to a regular tv and an XBOX360 does not offer much over the XBOX playing the same game! Only when you hook up the XBOX360 to a HDTV do the graphics pop and you start to see why the next gen XBOX is worth the money. So if we can get off of the debate about whether or not someone has a HDTV and can agree about the need for a HDTV with any next gen gaming system then the additon of Blu-Ray and 1080p output is a definate plus for the the PS3.

The XBOX360 is a known quantity. It is out, it is a fantastic gaming machine. It is a suped-up PC in a box. Microsoft really did a nice job bringing this out. It has some very nice games on it but as of yet no must have game -- no killer game yet. Hold on there guys - I know -- Gears of War and Halo 3 is on the Horizon and I bought an XBOX just to play Halo and Halo2. So killer games are on the way.

As for the PS3 we still know very little. As is with any new video gaming system, untill it is actually in our greedy little hands their abilities and hardware can only be debated. I have used Sony's specs as to the final PS3 configuration. We do not know what the final version will be. But there are some interesting things brewing.

I already meantioned that Sony is in conversation with Immersion. Vibration in the new controllers still might happen. Immersion has already stated that it is possible to have axis-sensing and vibration and that they might bring out their own controller for the PS3. Remember Bluetooth?

Sony has already stated that the PS3 could be upgraded. Does this mean larger Ram chips? We already know you can put a larger hard drive as the more expensive unit has a 60GB drive. A replacement for the video chip? Who knows what Sony is talking about but the idea is pretty neat. Most of us already do that with our computers.

Using Bluetooth technology could mean alot of hardware applications for the PS3. Printers, keyboards, mouses, I-Pods. They demonstated the Formula One game using a PSP as a rear view mirror using Bluetooth. The implication here for future gaming is enormus!

Blu-Ray gaming! Most programmers have always gripped about having limited space on the disk. Even though they have not tapped out DVD9 that is being used on the XBOX360 Blu-Ray does two things -- considerably more space and alot harder to copy. Is there an advantage here -- who knows -- we will have to wait for the games.

Finally Sony has stated that their on-line service for the PS3 will be free! If they pull this off this will be a coup!! Imagine most online gaming for free. You pay for the downloads to play online and then play as long as you want for free! I personally do not see how they can do this unless they plan to have lots for us to purchase that we want. Of course imagine downloading any music you want for a price and then transfering to your I-POD with Bluetooth-- I'm getting chills!

Both systems will do some things well and others not so well. There will be killer games on both systems. Who is salivating about MSG4 or WARHAWK or Killing Zone or a Grand Turismo in High Def? Probably the same folks salivating over Gears of War and Halo3!

I hope both systems survive and do well. Competition breeds better games. I also hope that both systems are differant enough that you can not direct port to either system. That means the same game with differant ablilites both visually and game play on both systems. I fear that the XBOX360 will get direct ports of PC games with little changes and the PS3 will get some ports but either with major changes in play or with some things left out. Only time will tell. However I see the gaming future as being very bright!

As for the price differances in the XBOX360 and the PS3? I do not believe the extra $100 is going to hurt the PS3 at all. You definately are getting more bang for your dollar with the PS3. I think Sony will not have any problems selling out their PS3 allotment. As for the higher priced PS3 $599. The wireless Ethernet, HDMI 1.3 and 60GB hardrive is a good value for an additonal $100.

Those of us with a High Def Home Theater System will buy one of these if only for the Blu-Ray! There might even be a Home Theater enthusiast who doesn't give a hoot about the PS3 gaming -- they just want a High Def Blu-Ray player and the PS3 will be the least expensive one on the market. I bet the $599 sells out before the $499! :hungry:

No. I'm not...... Once again, the cables don't generate HDTV output BUT without a component/DVI/HDMI cable you won't be getting anything more than 480i.

Which, if initial reports are accurate, the tard pak version of the PS3 won't have it.....

FYI: both consoles have component thus HD-ready output - you're confusing the lack of HDCP-compatible (HDMI) output with lack of HD output.
justinndover
Sure you are going to be able to purchase a PS3 for $499 with what? Sony is loosing $600 on each system. Expect them to include nothing to cover their loss. Your going to be looking at near $1000 for everything you need (that means games at 60 bucks a pop on the cheap end). I don't know about you all no video game system is worth that kind of money to me.
JoeSp
justinndover, have you lost your mind? You will get everything you need to play games for $499 including a hard drive, ethernet , wireless controller. What else do you need besides maybe a componet cable if one is not included? That cable is not going to cost you $500. And do you buy every game that comes out on a system? I don't think so.

Most people on a new system release buy two to three games. That is it. What add-ons are you going to need? This is not the XBOX360 core in which you do not get wireless controller or a hard drive. You are not playing with Microsoft here , they always make you pay extra, no you are dealing with Sony and their core system will be equal of the XBOX360 premium right out of the box -- no extras required!

$1000 -- why not say $2000 - makes as much sense!
tonyp56
Ok, again, I ask, why does it matter if PS3 has Blu-Ray? If that format folds under, you will have what? A game console! (if it doesn't you'll still have a game console, but you'll be able to play some movies that are Blu-Ray format) If you think that because Sony is a part of the Blu-Ray camp and that means it will be the format that becomes the only HD format, then I'd ask that you research other Sony ventures into "future" formats, etc... You'll find that very few ever take off--if any. Of course, Sony has done very well with the Playstation family (I, II, and PSP), and I still see several movies in their format for PSP at my local wal-mart. However, this doesn't mean Blu-Ray will be a widely accepted format.

Now, if say a year from now, when or if Blu-Ray becomes the only HD format, and Sony decided to add a Blu-Ray drive to their consoles, I wouldn't see a problem with that. But now, with the future of Blu-Ray being so unknown, PS3 having a Blu-Ray drive means nothing. Because it could become a waste of money, space, and time.
JoeSp
tonyp56, I do not believe we will see a clear winner until maybe 2008 if even then. Right now there are more manufacturers of DVD players and more movie studios in the Blu-Ray camp then in the HD-DVD camp. The current limit to one layer on the current Blu-Ray movies released and the very poor end product on the currently released movies does not bode well for the Blu-Ray camp.

However, we are only looking at the Samsung player whose regular DVD players all have problems with their HDMI outputs and they also crush whites and blacks. In the last five years they have not made a player that does not have these problems so I can not reasonably look at the current reviews without a grain of salt. Of course Sony shares in this initial embarreshment by letting Samsung be the first out of the gate and by producing some very bad Blu-Ray conversions. Perhaps they should have held their movies out until they get the second layer working (which they will).

There are people who support one or the other camp. I support both. With competition you will always get better product quicker in the life cycle. That is just how competition pushes the market. I do not see either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray going by the wayside anytime soon and I hope they both survive. This will bring lower cost players with better features and better HD movie conversions alot faster than if only one format survives. :)

Did you accidentally get on the wrong plan ?
I still do the once a year plans.

I tried to do that, when I did delivery driver work (2010- 2013), we had a fleet of Freightliners. The newer trucks had headunits that were satellite compatible (XM only I think), but lacked the antenna and guts. I got a car kt for my old Roady XT and tried to use it, but at the volume levels I needed have it at to hear it over the diesel engine it sounded like crap, so I used my phone with an aux cable. When I was in the middle of nowhere with no cell service it didn't do me any good though.

At my current job, one of our new cars has the free trial of SXM active, I frequently have to go off site to a location 75 miles away in a rural area and it's nice being able to use the service off of the satellites versus using the app. There are many places on this journey where all three providers lack service.

I have to think maybe more people dont keep track of the monthly XM bill. Every time i renew i put a reminder on my calendar week before its time to renew. My wife told me the other day not to renew her and then i told her you are not going to be able to listen to XM at home. Then she changed her mind...!!

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

Misapplication isn't something that the casual coder can identify. They can only discover, the hard way, that it doesn't work at some point.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

Agents need appropriate context to make what would be understood as the correct read in a situation like that, and that Gemini answer was a clear miss on that front.

That said, we've also seen Musk (and/or his team) put his thumb on the scale (or just release a very poor product) with his own deployed AI since:

In the end, it's all a tool. Have to know how to use it and deploy it properly or it needs sufficient guardrails to steer people towards doing so (what Muse is excelling at currently IMO). I'm routinely interacting with several agents a day operating various processes locally and in services I use, and there are numerous others silently spun up to perform actions or satisfy requests from my prompts.

Related to earlier discussion in the thread on leveraging local inference: this kind of analysis happening behind the scenes is something everyone will have built into Windows, IMO. Most people won't see all of this, just the results, unless they want to dig into how the fix was chosen. Stuff like this will be standard as agents get local system access baked in, and more of the inference itself moves on-device.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Yes, many have hacked a DirecTV or Dish Network dish before. Quite undersized, but would receive the 97w KU stations with an LNBF swap. Make a template to set the LNBF face angle and distance from the reflector. Remove the current circular polarity LNBFs and make a bracket to hold the replacement linear LNBF in the correct centered position. Remember to set the polarity skew.

would probably also work well for NHK on 101W and possibly for PBS on 99W. I used one for a while on 30W. Just keep in mind that because it's undersized for those satellites, it might work fine in clear weather but won't have much margin to account for signal degradation during rain/snow

If you can find one, the Shaw / Star Choice 75e ellipticals are great for use on 97, 99, and 101W. They are really just rebranded ChannelMaster 75 cm reflectors and use linear LNBFs by default out of the box.

Everyone else's mileage may vary.

I have read that some have converted this type dish but after giving it a good look, it's the lnb conversion that is the bottleneck. Does anyone have a picture of their attempt to configure the lnb? I watched a video on youtube from the save it for parts guy and he used duct tape! Guess it worked but I'm thinking something a bit more permanent!
Thanks to all for your interest and replies...

Many of us have used a universal LNBF mount (or get creative with L brackets and plumbers tape - perforated metal strapping). Use a few inches of aluminum tube (or a piece of 1x2" lumber) to extend the support arm (replacing the plastic mount used by DirecTV and Dish) to place the LNBF throat opening at the correct distance from the reflector, the correct height and at the correct angle. Nothing magical... simply place the new linear LNBF in the center at the same distance, height and angle as the current combo.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

JohnGalt1234 - So you basically have 2 Hopper 3's. The CasinoH3 is the one that is Hopper 3 only while Master Bedroom is a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup.
Master Bedroom uses Android TV (ATV) software so the DISH part is actually a app and will behave differently as you can probably tell the Guide's are different on the Master Bedroom which will resemble the same guide used on other ATV devices such as the Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4. If I am correct, the CasinoH3 is the one with the problem since you did say the one dated 09/05/2026 is the naughty one while 08/15/2026 named Master Bedroom is the nice one. Usually I would expect the CasinoH3 to be the one without the problem because it's Hopper 3 only and Master Bedroom would be the one with problems because it has the Hopper Plus involved. That is why they behave differently because CasinoH3 is running the native Hopper 3 software while Master Bedroom is running the Android TV software and also it runs a app called DISH known as package com.dish.atv.launcher, the version for mines is P15403 2026100917 so it's probably the same version as the Hopper Plus software version with the date of October 9, 2026, not sure what the 17 means except maybe revision 17?

This explains it better than I can. Sorry, had to take all the ads out.

As I understand it, the android is just the display signal from the hopper+. I can disconnect the H+ and plug the hdmi directly into the master hopper3.

It is not just a display signal as explained above. When you have the Hopper+ connected, it uses Android TV for pretty much everything except for the satellite signal which is why it uses the DISH app for the standard Hopper 3 functions. But that should not matter because in your case, CasinoH3 is the Hopper 3 with the EHD which is what you call the naughty one based on the dates you mentioned and Master Bedroom which has the Hopper Plus connected to the Hopper 3 that does not have the problem. So one way to test the theory is disconnect the Hopper Plus from that Hopper 3 and then use the EHD's connected to CasinoH3 currently to see if the same issue exists. That way you will know if the problem is there without a Hopper Plus connected or if CasinoH3 is just a bad hopper to begin with.

Normally when you disconnect the Hopper Plus, it will be 30 minutes or more before you can use the Hopper 3 again.

What you want to do is:
hold the POWER button in, not the red reset button, for about 45 seconds or so while disconnecting the power to the Plus and moving the HDMI cable and it will reboot to the normal Hopper only immediately.

It'll only see two EHDs at a time.
Yes, I have only two online at a time.
One comes online, the other one consistently will not come online

One comes online; the other consistently won't. Also, when I connect the EHD, the USB Detected status light on the EHD itself changes from Red to Green. But the Hopper (713) does not start the EHD read process. The light changes to indicate that the EHD has detected a valid USB cable, but the Hopper does not recognize it.
