Any satellites not in the Clarke belt?

I know this a pretty off the wall question, but I was just wondering if there are any satellites NOT in the Clarke belt? I remember a couple years ago when HDTV was gaining steam and I was a regular on the AVS forum boards, a discussion had arose about the best HDTV programming provider. C-band came up and being the best quality possible, and a gentleman said that inorder to have a good C-band setup one would need two satellite dishes, one pointing north and one pointing south, both with horizion to horizon mounts. Was he TOTALLY wrong? I'm pretty sure he didn't have C-band because he said it would cost him about $20,000 for startup costs to have an awesome HDTV programming experience. I didn't know if there was another sat or two that could be received that is not in the belt. Oh yeah, why the Clarke belt? Just to make it easier? Thanks!

The Heavens Above website at http://www.heavens-above.com/ is pretty good for providing information on where and when to look for visible satellites, be it the space station, shuttle or whatever is available. Just enter your location and you will get a list of times, brightness levels and where to look in the sky. The new solar panels just installed on the space station should make it extremely bright.

The Russians used highly elliptical (non Clarke belt) orbits inclined 63.4 degrees to the equator. The highly elliptical orbit gives the satellite a long "hang time" over their northern latitudes, providing coverage to areas where geo-synchronous satellites can not. The satellite moves fairly slowly in angle during it's apogee, but it does move across the sky relative to the earth. They typically deployed them in groups of 3 to provide 24-hour coverage. The 63.4 degree inclination is a "magic" angle that minimizes the precession of the orbit around the earth. The high altitude, long dwell time tends to remain fixed instead of walking around the orbital path. I don't know if they were used for consumer TV/Video or not.

Have seen the ISS a couple of times, both just before dawn when the sun was already illuminating it. The local morning news mentioned it would be passing overhead, and there it was. It's big! Almost looked as bright as a plane. Have also seen the shuttle on many occasions over the years on its way in for a landing...

I've seen the Space Shuttle several times. I happen to be in the landing path for Cape Canaveral/Kennedy. It soars over Atlanta, zooms across me, I'm at Lizella Georgia, seems to get to Kennedy in less than 5 minutes, which is about 400-500 miles from me. Now, thats hauling *ss. When it comes by, better not blink, you might miss it? I've also seen the ISS a few times. When I was a kid, during a severe thunderstorm with blackout, I saw "Uncle Martin" land in my back yard. I know it was him, because my older sister would never lie to me?

Actually, the Clark Belt satellites are in geo-stationary orbit. Geo-synchronous satellites are like the Sirius ones that track the same ground path every orbit.

Well, the season finale went balls to the wall. Non stop action and several twisted twists. Gary Oldman at his best. Very well written and executed. Tavener owes Jackson big time. Only "if" was Jack Lowden's (River) cliffhanger, especially admin-st the buzz that he is the next James Bond in waiting.

Another great season.

Sorry to see Flyte go. I also liked the Coe character. Sooner or later someone is going to take Taverner out. I think I will enjoy that.

I read that Lowden (River) was photographed during production of Season 8. Hopefully he will be back for 7 as well.

Hear, hear! Flyte was probably the most competent character in the show. We were also sad to see Coe come up short against the Russian operative.

Still some uncertainty about the last five minutes. The line from Lamb about "faking one's death" gives us something to think about until the next season.

Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) - Had never heard of this but some of you might find this news story helpful

Now right up front....this is NOT intended to devolve into a "pot is good" vs "pot is bad" thread. The whole point is to make you aware of a potential problem that a person can develop when they start smoking pot at a young age. Not that they WILL, but CAN. Kinda like getting lung cancer from smoking cigs....some do, some don't. The purpose of posting this news story is to keep anyone from paying an outrageous emergency room bill......knowledge is power.
While this may not affect you, you might run into someone who is experiencing these symptoms and can share the info. Fortunately, it looks like stopping smoking is the cure and isn't a permanent condition.

What supplements have you found that really helped your overall health

Didn't see a thread like this so I figured why not start one. This is about natural supplements. If you aren't into supplements, fine, but please let those of us who do want to discuss this discuss it.

The first one I wanted to mention has been a real life changer. I'm 62 and still do all of my own install work at my business....also do all the yard work at the house. A few years ago I started noticing that I was losing my range of movement, it was even getting hard to bend over and lace up my boots. Almost got stuck in an attic because I couldn't get turned around once the work was done. Didn't think much of it and figured with age comes stiffness that was only going to get worse as time went on.
It was then that I stumbled across a video which was discussing rotator cuff tears and why they were to prevalent these days. Turns out, the culprit is a simple deficiency in MANGANESE which is key in keeping your tendons flexible. Most anti-biotics strip your body of any manganese it might have had which is why certain anti-biotics, especially those in the Cipro family. I actually knew a man who had two tendons tear while on that stuff.
Went to Amazon and ordered some manganese. Now it took a while, it wasn't instant, but gradually I have regained all of my flexibility. I can bend over and touch my toes while standing with no pain and putting on my boots is no longer a chore.
Pretty cheap too. The bottle I ordered was a 200 ct for under $13. They said to take double the normal dose for the first month because most people are severely lacking, then go to one a day.

Andy it builds your bones if I had used it in my food all my life I would not have the joint issues I have there is 3 types of calcium only the one from real foods build better bones

I have taken this stuff for years to help my joints. Over 20 yrs ago my shoulder sounded like it had gravel in it when I rotated it. Started taking this and after a few months I had my range of motion back. I mentioned this product to a doctor and told him the results I had and he totally blew it off....said it was just a coincidence. This has no shellfish like most joint supplements.

IT FIXED my wife's shoulder and knee pain, I only wish I took it before I got into Sat in 83, that beat my body up, I'm still here I turn 85 on the 31th

This would be good for me being I am allergic to shellfish. I have arthritis bad in my right sholder.

I have tried the pill form and this liquid form and found the liquid to be far superior. It wasn't immediate, my joints slowly improved over time.

Comcast called fiber pricing "irrational" because the ROI is over three years. What is irrational to me is Comcast internet is based on lines they put in the ground decades ago at this point, for the most part. Is copper that much more expensive to maintain?

yes. even copper lines in a house degrade over 70 years, I doubt coax would last that long. Fiber Optic on the isp side will last over 70 years with very dedgration

The fiber coming in to the house looks like 300 ohm old TV wire I think that is the weak point.

I thought Voyage was decent (for the first two seasons). The rest, not so much. All other shows were pretty lame, IMO. Especially Land of the Giants.

I'm surprised Walmart hasn't banned this guy from all of their stores. He has been on their CASE the past few months.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

I remember when a pound of coffee was 16oz. Now its 12oz, they don't call it a pound anymore and its three times the cost of the 16oz pound.

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

It's simple math. You take the price and divide by the number of ounces and come up with the price per ounce. I find it hard to believe that Walmart's computers can't carry out simple division.

The division isn't the problem, the inputs are. On the Starbucks pods, $9.22 @ $3.35/oz works out to 2.75 oz, but the box is 1.94 oz. So either the system has the wrong weight on file, or the unit price is left over from an older price of about $6.50 that never got updated. Garbage in, garbage out. Walmart's had unit-pricing data problems before, too - in 2024 they paid $1.64M to settle with New Jersey after inspectors found 2,000+ instances of unit prices using the wrong unit of measure.

*nit pick* You want cream or more precisely FAT to make ice cream. Milk isn't heavy enough. When making my own, I use half and half.

Wrong unit of measure? Having a hard time believing that or were they conflating solid and fluid ounces (stupid US measuring system).

The first two coffees aren't off on the same amount, so likely the unit price is linked to some previous price. Now I have to *bleeping* double check more math? Does anyone check anything anymore? Bad enough in the professional world having to QA/QC a third party's work. Don't want to have to do that in the grocery store now too! Not with the absurd measures that are used in the US. Is that unit price for blueberries in ounces or pints...

First world problems, but man... argh!!!

Starlink Router question

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.
