[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]NEW YORK -- Alexei Cherepanov, a 19-year-old first-round draft pick of the New York Rangers, died Monday during a Continental Hockey League game in Russia. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]Former Rangers captain Jaromir Jagr played a shift with Cherepanov and was talking to his young Avangard Omsk teammate on the bench shortly after they left the ice, when Cherepanov suddenly collapsed, said a Rangers spokesman who talked to Jagr. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]There was no collision that preceded the collapse, the spokesman said, but no other details were available. Cherepanov scored the first goal of the game and had eight in 15 games this season, his third with Avangard Omsk. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]The Rangers announced the death of Cherepanov shortly before they played at home against the New Jersey Devils. New York coach Tom Renney said his club was not aware of any health issues with Cherepanov. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]"He's a Ranger and I think it'll have an impact on people," Renney said. "We're going to have to deal with it in our own personal way, but in the interest of a bright, young life that's over we're going to have to pursue the objective of tonight and that's get two points from New Jersey. [FONT=Arial, Helvetica]"The first thing we can do is honor him with a great effort tonight." [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]Cherepanov surprisingly slipped to the Rangers during the 2007 NHL Draft and they grabbed him with the 17th pick. The talented forward dropped because of concerns about his signability and the potential difficulty in getting him to leave Russia. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]New York assistant coach Mike Pelino recently returned from a one-week trip to Russia where he watched Cherepanov play and then dined with him and Jagr. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]The Rangers maintained a good relationship with Omsk and the club's general manager even though there has been feuding between the NHL and Russia's KHL. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]The future appeared bright for Cherepanov, and the Rangers said he definitely figured in their plans. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]"I was shocked when I heard. I thought it must be a misprint or something because he just had so much going for him," Pelino said. "He was someone who I was really excited about and thought, 'Wow, we did get something special here.' [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]"He had things to work on. We felt he had to become a little stronger still, he had to probably become a little bit more aware defensively. But as far as raw talent went and the ability to score, he was great." [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]Renney kept tabs on Cherepanov every few weeks by checking in with Jagr and new Omsk coach Wayne Fleming, who recently left an assistant coaching position with the Calgary Flames to take the job in Russia. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]Renney said Jagr told him that Cherepanov could probably play on New York's second line now. [/FONT]

I read this earlier today and was absolutely shocked that there was not even an ambulance in attendance for the game, let alone any professional medical staff! This boy died out in the parking lot as they were trying to revive him.

Can you imagine playing a game as dangerous as hockey with no medical staff around?

Yes this reminds me of the Fisher problem at Detroit a few years ago.
In Detroit they had a defibrillator and a ambulance at the game and they saved him.
But I was reading in the paper about the problem in Russia that they are not even sure if the defibrillator was working you would think that they would check that every day.
I wounder what Michale Moore would say about that.

Everyone praised the Red Wings and their staff for their excellent response to the Fisher seizure. I remember seeing that chilling video the night it happened. Whatever happened to that young man?

P.S. There is a huge investigation now beginning re: why the ambulance was missing, etc. But it's too late now.

I believe Fischer is working in player development for the Red Wings.

Plus after he was back on his feet he went into the Wings office and said he was going to retire but they told him not to because he had a year left on his contract.
That just shows what a classy organization the Wings are.

Part of the reason guys like Hossa and Stuart play here instead of somewhere else. Both could have got bigger contracts on the open market. Stuart's quote was interesting - "I looked around, and I decided I didn't want to play against these guys."
The Red Wings have a history of taking care of their players in a first class way, as well as their other employees. I have a few friends that work for the organization, and they're always saying how well the Ilitch's take care of them.
