Actually, I have umpired a baseball game. If you didn't see something, then you didn't see something, and having a fake pow-wow of people who didn't see something doesn't enable someone who got it wrong to get it right. Have you ever heard of radios?

So now you think the umps carry radios on the field? OBVIOUSLY at least one of the other umps saw the catch. Like cosmo said, the important thing is to get the call right, and they did. BTW, how many games have you umpired, and at what level?

I'd be astounded if at least the crew chief doesn't. They've been carrying them in football for about three decades or longer, and the league surely needs to be able to communicate with the crew.

I don't mind them "getting it right." but it is foolish to keep pretending that they are making all these calls based on one of them being certain that he had a better view of something that none of them could be certain they saw correctly.

It's pretty simple really. In fact, there is a rule for it:

Rule 9.02(c)
If a decision is appealed, the umpire making the decision may ask another umpire for information before making a final decision. No umpire shall criticize, seek to reverse or interfere with another umpire's decision unless asked to do so by the umpire making it.

I commend the ump for calling strikes "at the letters" the way it's supposed to be...not the belt...not the belly button....but the letters. However, it was a bit strange to see so many letter high strikes being called at the park last night.Sent from my

The Strike Zone: A historical timeline


1996 - The Strike Zone is expanded on the lower end, moving from the top of the knees to the bottom of the knees.

1988 - "The Strike Zone is that area over home plate the upper limit of which is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, and the lower level is a line at the top of the knees. The Strike Zone shall be determined from the batter's stance as the batter is prepared to swing at a pitched ball."

1969 - "The Strike Zone is that space over home plate which is between the batter's armpits and the top of his knees when he assumes a natural stance. The umpire shall determine the Strike Zone according to the batter's usual stance when he swings at a pitch."

1963 - "The Strike Zone is that space over home plate which is between the top of the batter's shoulders and his knees when he assumes his natural stance. The umpire shall determine the Strike Zone according to the batter's usual stance when he swings at a pitch."

1957 - "A strike is a legal pitch when so called by the umpire which (a) is struck at by the batter and is missed; (b) enters the Strike Zone in flight and is not struck at; (c) is fouled by the batter when he has less than two strikes at it; (d) is bunted foul; (e) touches the batter as he strikes at it; (f) touches the batter in flight in the Strike Zone; or (g) becomes a foul tip. Note: (f) was added to the former rule and definition."

Leyland needs to walk over and talk with him like he did when he was struggling in the early part of the season ..... he told him to relax ad think about how much fun it was in College ... and to play like he was back then .... then he suddenly started pounding the ball.

Tonight's Pitching Matchups

I would love two deciding Game 5's Friday night, but either way, I REALLY want a Brewers-Phillies NLCS matchup. IMO, that would be a series for the ages!

I tip my hat to AJ for a good game last night. I dont mean to be a debbie downer but the first great catch Granderson made, isnt it kind of his own fault. I say that because didnt he misjudge the ball and had to go back and catch it? Nevertheless, 2 great catches that saved AJ's bacon.

Yep, the crowd was ready to "explode" but was quickly silenced with his first catch. The game was close when he make his spectacular diving-catch in the 6th inning...it was like every Tiger fan was punched in the stomach and the air left the ballpark. I'll betcha AJ will be sending Grandy a pair of Isotoner gloves for Christmas.

A bit of surprising news out today involves the indomitable MLB on Fox partnership of Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. It was announced today that former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona will replace McCarver for the first two games of the ALCS on Fox. From CSN New England...

"Francona has been hired by FOX to serve as a color commentator for the network's coverage of the American League Championship Series. Francona, who parted company with the Red Sox last Friday, will be replacing Tim McCarver, who is sidelined with a medical issue. McCarver is expected back by Game 3 of the ALCS, meaning Francona will likely work only the first two games of the telecasts with play-by-play announcer Joe Buck."

Yup, Granderson took a step in, then froze to see if it was sinking or picking up air.
This is always the hardest play , when it's hit right at you, hard to judge.

I give him credit for making the play, weather he misjudged it or not, still a great momentum changer.
Had it got over him, it would have been 3 maybe 4 runs in, huge play !

Then he had to go and TOP that one with the next great catch later.

Yesterday Leyland announced that Don Kelly would start at 3B tonight and Magglio Ordonez would start in Right Field.

Tigers need to relax and get the 1.3.4.5 hitters going tonight.

Tigers are really missing Brennan Boesch as the Left handed bat in thier line up.

I asked because it's pretty clear that you have no idea what is involved in umpiring at anything above a men's slow pitch level or a 12u rec league game.

As weird as it sounds I would prefer Inge at third tonight both defensively and at bat. Not that he is a good hitter but he has played well in the playoffs. I think he is much more likely to get a big hit for the Tigers tonight than Kelly. I would love to be proven wrong.

Me too! I can see sitting Betemit because his bat has gone ice-cold, but Inge is swinging the bat well and is our best player at 3B. Anyway, I am getting excited about the game this evening.
