2015 Dish Price Increase

When I was checking to price out Time Warner, I think my computer crashed when it displayed the monthly fee for an HD DVR. Something like $25 a month.

Regardless, the old saying is you get what you pay for, so that means in 2015, the television has never been better!

Do TiVo users not end up paying comparable fees just for guide data?

If your willing to keep your equipment for more than 3 years and purchase the lifetime sub, then no. Especially since cableco's keep raising equipment fees. And then the savings keep adding up over time. Of course I bought three of mine used (all with lifetime subs) and only spent $425 over the course of 2 years on them and I bought a Premier new for $520 with lifetime sub. My oldest is a Series 2 that was activated in 2003 and I have have a used Premier and TivoHD that are at least 4 years old. So their equipment is pretty solid. The first 2 (Series 2 and bought new Premier) were ota supplements while we were subscribed to Dish. I then bought the other two used models after we switched to cable.

They key will be if the cable operator and TiVo can get together on a replacement for CableCard that could become a much bigger issue after the sunset of the integration ban. If that can't be worked out, you have some research to do. TiVo talks a lot today about engaging the various carriers on the next generation schemes.

If I were playing devil's advocate, I would suggest that cable is raising their prices now in anticipation of offing CableCard and TiVo users having to revert to using the leased technology.

Dish keeps saying it has to dispute all of these contract negotiations with Turner , CBS, and Fox to keep our rates low.

But Dish is raising its rates $5 next month after giving us two rate increases earlier this year.

In contrast, U-Verse isn't raising its rates $5 next month, only $3 , without any outages or hassles or threats.

Television will continue to transform. Improved technologies such as HD, DVR, Additional Tuners, On Demand and TV Anywhere/Sling have probably helped extend the reign of television as we currently see it with increased prices but delayed the inevitable demise that will come when it will eventually be mostly "On Demand" service.

Best Buy sells the Tivo Roamio OTA unit outright for only $50. Then it's $14.95 a month for subscription. I'm going that way after my promos run out. None of these providers are doing anything but killing the market completely with constant price increases.

Along with FTA, and the stuff my smart tv gets, there's not much need for anything else.

I wish I had mine but it died about a year and a half after I bought it. OF course no way to repair it , so in the trash it went.

Time Warner here in Charlotte is adding a sports fee of $2.75/mo. See my post 313 in this thread for a link to the details.

I know this isn't directly tied to the price increase, but I agree. It may be 5 years, 10 years...but at some point, people will look back and say "Wait, you mean broadcasters used to put shows on at a certain time, and people used to have to tune in on that schedule to see the shows? How odd!" We're probably more than halfway to that now. Excluded, of course, will be live broadcasts of things like sports, and breaking news.

No. TWC here is more expensive and their DVR is not as good as the Hopper.

Who cares? All that matters is the total bill at the end. Dish may have had lots of disputes this year but not one affected my TV viewing at all. Now, if U-Verse was able to avoid any disputes and have a minimal price increase all while being able to keep their prices lower than the competition then that's awesome. If they are still more expensive then wahoo for you.

I had TWC cable for 2 years at a special discount rate. Dropped it when it went up to normmal price. I agree, their dvr is antiquated compared to the Hopper.

That's why a lot of people keep switching to new providers after every promo period is over.

Just rec'd an offer from Time Warner offering me their "Preferred TV" package (200+ channels), to add on to my internet service from them, for $10/mo for (12) months. This is their # 3 (from lowest to highest, it's Starter TV, Standard TV, Preferred TV).

$10 a month ! Pretty enticing, eh ?

Doesn't include any set-top (although one is required) - $11.25/mo, add'l boxes are $12.75/ea/mo. Does not include DVR service. That's just deceptive. They'll turn the TV service on to your home but if you want to watch anything, the price doubles right off the bat !

Yes, but their price blows Dish out of the water. Remember, most people don't look at the final bill.
