211k with hard drive question

I use my 211k in my RV. I like the way it works but came across a problem.When I move to a new location and power up the 211k and hard drive, sometimes it is not possable to receive sat signal because of trees etc. Here is my question. Why can't I access the recording on my hard drive ontil I receive and download a sat signal? And why can't I still use the antenna input to watch the local stations? Is there a way to use these features with out having a sat signal?

With EHDs. you HAVE to have a signal so the receiver can "talk" and authorize your account/EHD authorization.
