New to the forum. I am not a big tech guy so I hope someone can help me. I am ugrading my Hopper and I would like to save the recordings. I read the requirements for a hard drive but I am not sure what to buy. I am looking for the cheapest possible. Once I am done with this I may never use it again so I hate to spend alot just to copy DVR recordings to export to the new Hopper. Any suggedtions? I looked at ones on Amazon but I am not sure which to get.

If you don't want to save them on a hard drive, and only want to transfer them you can transfer them from hopper to hopper.

Thank you for linking that video. The commentator on the video states that if I pay for the insurance, the technician coming for the installation is supposed to take care of that. I have to check my bill but I do believe I pay for insurance. The technician is coming to install the new equipment on Friday

The technician that came started the transfer on Friday afternoon. After it brought over about 10% the transfer stopped. I tried restarting it and I couldn't get it to work. He used an ethernet cable and connected the old box to the new box.

Trying to transfer the files from the old box to the new box after the process stopped prematurely, the new Hopper doesn't seem to recognize the files on the old hopper. I thought something happened to the old Hopper and then when looking up the DVR recordings on another television the old DVR files on the old Hopper were accessible to watch. Weird. Tech support was no help.

Did you try to reinitiate the transfer again? You really didn't say that you did that.

The insurance has nothing to do with the tech taking care of it. And I know I haven't read the rest of the thread, but number one, this is a hit or miss operation. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Also, it's not fast. I transferred a hopper. I had to a newer one some years ago and it took about 24 hours to move 50% of the drive.

it actually stopped transferring. It got to 11% and then stopped. It was still at 11% after 12 hours

The only thing that works successfully is using a hard drive. I didn't see it answered, but you can use up to 8TB in multiple drives or just one if you can afford it that size and it needs to plug into the wall for power, not USB for power.
