4DTV's Still Good for Anything?

I was wondering if 4DTV's are still useful for anything before I list it on ebay.

They are a pretty good boat anchor for small boats. :oldwink

Seriously though, there is some stuff up there that can be gotten with them if they are "remapped", which isn't a chore to be taken lightly from what I've read. I've got a 920 sitting on the bench now that I've never done for that reason. That, and the cable required to do the remap is a "one off" deal, ie, you pay through the nose for it and it can only be used by you so you can't sell it.

At one time there were several ppl around that would do the remap for you but as heavy as these things are, the shipping would likely kill that deal for most ppl.

Ennywho, I'd go ahead and list it on fleabay and see if there's someone out there that wants it more than you do.

I've got one and it's High Def unit. Just been sitting for years

Same here. I've kept my 922 powered up but I doubt it'll be of much use for receiving programming again. I guess I'll power it down and recycle it instead of wasting electricity. My DSR922 and HD unit cost a pretty penny so I'll hate to get rid of them. But what can you do?

You can watch c-span. It's the only analog channel in the world. But I had it tuned in. Before my box died. A few months ago.

Here is something to think about. The box that I had. Still working at the time. I unhooked a week before the shutdown at the programming center. (August 2016). I left one hooked up. I wanted to see if the story was true. That they sent codes down to kill the box.

Well I can tell you this. The box became unstable that day. No matter how you hooked it up. The screen would spin. And you could not get it to lock on anything.
Where my other one. Just having the cable unplugged. It still worked. The clock would set. I could get the DC light to come on. And get c-span.
The other box would not do anything.
It still had the maps. And x4. Even the channels for x4. Just like the other one.

So it proved to me. That they did send a code to shut the box down. Like I had read. The last time they did it. 2010. I think. Here is a pic on cspan

They didn't send any "kill code",both my boxes were hooked up and operating through the entire period and they never missed a beat.Worked fine then and still working fine now, just not much to pick up with them anymore.

I'd say beat comcast at what they did. They shut it down (August 2016) because a guy hacked the Box. I say someone needs to hack a 4dtv box. And link a new fta receiver to it. For the use of the tuner. For S2. And I'd be willing to bet the box would work.

And send it to comcast. And the providers. So it forces Dc2 to shut down for good. And put comcast in the dark.
Since they don't play fair anyways.

There is a video where the guy explained how he did it. I hope I inspire someone to do it. To force kill dc2. Since they got greedy. And where part of the problem

Same here, still using it, no kill code was ever sent.

I have 2 dsr920 and still use them for a dish movers. Have taken battery dead units and brought them back to life. These are precision dish movers.
I stay on g14 125d most of the time as music choice is on this bird and turner channels. LOVE MY BUD's and. have 3 in service.

I have the last Starchoice 921 with Shaw Direct. I swapped out the battery in early 2013, so the image is still pristine. Shaw decided to swap out all of the legacy receivers, trying to go full HD in the next few months. In early 2013, I JTAG'd the 921 and gave Map-Masters the only surviving 921 bin for their project to make Maps for the 920, 921 and 922 4DTV units. It now resides in my closet. I wish that I had a good home for this unit, but that seems very remote.

Still have 2 4dtv units. but I'm tired of feeding them electricity. one still moves a dish. the other I hope to one day soon..lol :facepalm

Is this below right ?
if I let the battery (ies) die it will lose the Sat's they both know (well the one I use). then I'll have to reprogram them back in..... this is what I recall.
Thanks for reading and any help.

When the battery dies you lose the unit ID and it reverts back to the factory settings the next time the unit loses power.
The ID doesn't matter anymore but if you replace the battery you can still use it as a dish mover. However, you will only have the limited number of sat positions that came from the factory. You would need the Map Master program and the USB interface cable ($70) to restore all the sat positions. You could send it to someone to do the MM but the shipping charges alone would probably run a $100 or more.
If you replace the battery before the original dies you retain the ID and the current memory.

I did not know it became a door stop when the battery died. guess my memory is fading.

I'm up nearly $200 on 4DTV boxes. got screwed a couple of years before they came out though, buying 2 Drakes for about $1800 +. they became nothing more than dish movers fast, still use both of those now., ...untill one of us dies.

These 4DTV boxes use 25 watts each 24/7 365. :oldmad
