Does anyone have any info about the functional differences between these machines?

E.g. Will 630 have dual recording capability? Etc.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Speculation at this point....

and that is all anything about SD is. The "rumoured" 605 and 630 are not here yet and their track record for updating receivers is abysmal. When you see it working in front of you, believe it, otherwise, it may never happen. Just ask the 530 owners at digital home. The only thing SD has got working (somewhat) and implemented recently is HDCP.

BTW I am not (from other posts also) really trying to bash SD. They have a great service without as many annoying simsibs as BTV, but the hardware leaves alot to be desired. It could be so much better if it was not just a "side service" to SBS and Shaw cable.

And a big thank you to SatboyZ for NOT bashing Shaw and giving a very thorough response to Imt2011

To add:

505/530 - MPEG2 8PSK capable

605/630 - MPEG4 DVB-S2 capable with built switching for Ku Band/Extended Ku reception.

As for the firmware capabilities of the 605/630 - who knows at this point.

Thank you, for that info... That is a shame but since there are no other options at this point it will do.

Are we going to have to upgrade from 505 to 605 ?
Or will the 505 be around for awild.

The 505s should work for awhile, but there may be less and less they can receive. Shaw has not revealed their future plans, but any channels they encode in H.264 down the road will require 605/630 receivers. There is speculation the HD channels will be the first to migrate to this format. The other question is how Shaw will handle the extended Ku range on their new birds. That might also require a 605/630.

Where to buy light up remote for Shaw Direct?

Questions about equipment...heck questions about A LOT of stuff!
