8300hd question - hard drive

Hi,
I was wondering if anybody knows if you unplug the unit for a long period of time (lets say a couple of hours) Does the box lose any recorded programs that were saved on the unit.

I only ask because someone at work said that they unplugged their unit to do some moving around of furniture and everything was lost , when powered up again.

How can this be, or was their problem a freak occurrence. I only ask because soon there's some construction being done at my house, and the power needs to be shut off, from time to time.

The recordings should stay on the HD once recorded. Only when a master clear of the HD is done, should the recordings all be erased.
