a little help please

i have a rear projection toshiba 51hc85
wife just called, and everything is all green/red

sounds like a bulb is out

i cannot find them anyplace
even the closest service center cant find them

so my questions are
1. anyone know where to get bulbs?
2. is it even worth it?

Not sure how it would be the bulb. Try unplugging for 5 minutes then plugging it back in. I had an LCD that kind of did that with a green hue. Unplugging worked.

Disregard. After looking a little, I guess there are three bulbs. Interesting. Anyways, seems it could be a couple different things.

This would appear to be a CRT-based unit and as such there is no bulb (lamp). Even with the 3LCD models, there was only one lamp combined with a series of mirrors.

It seems likely that a driver board has failed.

Given the pricing on some of the current crop of LCD and Plasma TVs in the 50" range ($600 and $700 respectively), you're probably better off replacing the TV.

Unless it is a simple fix (i.e. reboot), I agree that replacement will be the best option. This TV is a 6 year old model, probably impossible to find parts for repair.

after some fiddling with the settings, it looks much better
will wait a bit and see how it acts
but it smost likley a new tv in the near future

now question would be lcd/led/plasma

Plasmas are being discontinued. I forget the exact timeline but its something like the next 2 or 3 years. Currently less than 10% of the market.

Yeah, choices for TV is a real PITA!

I love plasma, but glare is an issue with all plasmas in really bright rooms. Generally I close the blinds if it bothers me, but oh that picture!

That said, I'm contemplating going much bigger after the first of the year, and DLP is high on the list as it offers the most bang for the buck. I'm considering a 73" as that is about as big as my room could handle.

CRT's have a great picture but if there are any problems with them they are more expensive to fix than just replace them.

I don't think it will be that soon. A lot depends on what comes next. LED/LCD just isn't good enough to be the only thing and I for one would take a pass on a new TV if those were the only choices.

DLP's are going away. Mitsubishi is the only company left and they just announced they are doing away with them. So you better get one now.

I can't find the article now, but I recall reading how plasma is less than 10% of the market and declining. And a year was announced as the last year of production for plasma panels. I'll get my wife to search for it, she's much better at that than me.

BTW, there are only 3 plasma manus left- Panny, Samsung & LG.

Yeah, things are irritating in tv land IMO! That will only leave LCD/LED since they can't seem to get OLED production rates up. And as far as I'm concerned those are just not very good compared to Plasma and DLP.

I'm going nuts trying to finger out size vs features. I'm down to 73" or 82". And I'm not concerned about bulbs, but I am concerned about color wheel replacement.
