moon: I think he means where did you find this exactly. That link just goes to a generic page on satellite direct mag, but not directly to the info you posted nor the original date of the news release. I couldn't find the news release, is this just a repost of the same news from back in late January or early February or something new?

I did find this page on their site which would be of interest for all of you to keep tabs on.

Satellite Direct magazine prints any major D* announcement for the previous month. I'm sure that is the case here...just a reprint of the February release. :)

DIRECTV to Launch Interactive TV
The satcaster this month plans to offer daily horoscopes and lottery results.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (March 8) -- DIRECTV plans this month to launch its highly anticipated Interactive TV service. Called DIRECTV Active, it will provide viewers access to local weather information, daily horoscopes, stock summaries and lottery results. Dish owners will be able to retrieve the information with their TV remotes.

However, at this time, it's uncertain when DIRECTV will also provide interactive features for popular programming, such as CBS' Survivor, Fox's American Idol and the horse racing channel, TVG Network.

CBS recently announced that it will soon offer interactive features for Survivor, including on-screen polls. EchoStar, DIRECTV's main satellite rival, and several cable operators are expected to offer the interactive Survivor. In addition, EchoStar now permits subscribers in 12 states to bet on the horses through an Interactive TV feature on the TVG Network.

Jade Ekstedt, a DIRECTV spokeswoman, confirmed that the satcaster plans to launch DIRECTV Active this month. But Eckstedt said she's not sure if interactive features for American Idol and TVG will be part of the launch.

"We haven't publicly announced anything like that," she said, adding that she did not know a specific launch date for the interactive service. "But we are planning for it this month."

TVPredictions.com has learned that DIRECTV will offer interactive features for primetime programming, such as American Idol. But the features may not be ready for the launch of DIRECTV Active. The satellite TV service has had some technical glitches with the interactive service, which has delayed its launch until this month.

DIRECTV's ITV service will be free to subscribers. However, the company says it will only be available to owners of "interactive-enabled" DIRECTV receivers, later models sold over the last few years.

The main features of DIRECTV ACTIVE will be:

Main Screen
DIRECTV Active's main screen, which will have its own channel, will display stock market summaries and local weather information. In addition, a video loop will provide customer care and Pay Per View highlights.

Weather
The interactive weather feature will provide current and five-day local weather forecasts for thousands of U.S. cities. Viewers will be able to add up to five additional U.S. cities from a list of more than 2,000 cities.

Mix Channels
The Mix Channels, which are currently available on DIRECTV, enable subscribers to view up to six live channels from different networks on one screen. However, after the launch of DIRECTV Active, viewers will be able to tune to one Mix channel by pressing the "Select" key on their remotes. The first three DIRECTV Mix channels are for sports, news and children.

Horoscope
DIRECTV viewers will be able to check their daily horoscope by clicking on an on-screen astrological sign.

Lottery
DIRECTV will offer up-to-the-minute results from the 38 state lotteries in the United States. Current jackpot amounts will also be listed. -30-

From Multichannel.com:

Chrysler to Drive ITV Ads on DirecTV

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Steve Donohue 4/12/2005 5:23:00 PM

DirecTV Inc. cut an advertising deal with DaimlerChrysler’s Chrysler Group that will see the auto company deliver interactive ads to DirecTV subscribers with set-tops enabled with interactive software and to customers with new DirecTV digital-video recorders.

The deal will allow subscribers watching a 30-second spot from DirecTV’s advertising inventory to press a red button on their remote controls to access features such as the ability to schedule a test drive of a car or to view video clips that show the making of the car and how it performs on a track, DirecTV senior vice president Eric Shanks said in an interview.

DirecTV subscribers may also be able to use their remotes to customize a Chrysler 300 on their TV screens by choosing from various paint schemes or wheels, Shanks added.

News Corp.’s British Sky Broadcasting Group plc satellite company in the United Kingdom uses a similar red interactive button on its remote controls, which served as a model for DirecTV’s interactive strategy.

DirecTV also announced that Chrysler has joined its new advertising-development partner program. DirecTV will conduct focus groups with subscribers to measure the effectiveness of the Chrysler ads and help come up with new ideas for interactive ads as part of the program.

Twentieth Television, a News Corp. sibling of DirecTV, oversees ad sales for DirecTV.

Shanks said DirecTV is looking to sign three other “cornerstone advertisers” for the advertising-development partner program. In addition to Chrysler, the direct-broadcast satellite provider has had positive talks with packaged-goods companies, movie companies, video-game sellers and consumer-electronics firms, he added.

DirecTV plans to store interactive content and long-form ads on its new DVRs, which are scheduled to debut in the middle of 2005.

Ads from Chrysler and other interactive advertisers will also be included in the DBS company’s new DirecTV Active interactive-TV service, which is scheduled to launch during the next two weeks.

Advertising from Chrysler and other interactive-TV advertisers will also be added to exclusive DirecTV programming, including its Newsmix and Sportsmix genre mosaic channels and its “NFL Sunday Ticket” out-of-market National Football League package, Shanks said.

Do these dates concern all manufacturers of the D10?

In the news section of the May issue of Satellite Direct out this week, it states "By the time you read this, DirecTV will have launched its free interactive TV service called DirecTV Active". It is mid-April, and we are still waiting on the interactive services scheduled for February! Has anyone heard what the "actual" timeframe for the interactive services will be?

I Have 2 D10-200 receivers, will I get software upgrade for the new interactive servives? and if so, will the software upgrade come through on the dish or the phone line?

No, the D10-??? IRDs will be upgraded around August if lucky.

Only the D10s will be working at this time.

It always comes from the dish. The phone line has a low bandwidth and is only used when data need to be sent from the customer to the service provider.

JosephB said:
Right now Active will only be available on D10's and newer boxes. I am not sure about the H10 (the high def D10 basically) but no other older boxes will be compatable, ever.

The H10 comes with a active button on the remote and on front of the stb.
