What's your price range? "Cheap" can be a subjective term

Well seeing how I don't want to dive in too deep I've seen receivers in the $30-$50 range

Unfortunately you have posed a "catch 22" problem. The cheap receivers you find on popular auction sites that are made in China come without any customer support. The seller doesn't know anymore than they read in the always limited owner's manual. So you must rely on sites like this for help. Which is a good thing here. However not many of the regulars here use those cheap receivers because of the "theft of service" options installed in those boxes. TOS is not discussed here.
There are receivers that cost a little more but come with great service after the sale and are popular among the FTA hobbiest. If you read through the FTA forums you will find numerous threads regarding receiver choices.

Magic Static is right. It's worth spending about $95-$125 on a reputable receiver. KE4EST sells a good one
