Does anyone know if there are some mid price ($75 - $125) receivers coming out soon? Something like the amiko 265 or similar?
I have an amiko at my cabin and no issues but would like a little better receiver than my GT Media I'm running at home. Something with more sensitivity because after the last monsoon, I dumped my motorized Ku and hard tuned to 97w but can't get CNN now. Anything in the pipeline?

I think the chance of a new FTA satellite receiver being offered specifically to the North American audience anymore is low. So you probably will need to source from overseas, or buy through a reseller over here, or buy used.

If you are a true satellite hobbyist, and don't mind messing with a receiver based on Linux, you can look at the current models of Edision. I'm a fan of this line of receivers but they are not for anybody not willing to put in the effort and time to learn how they work. I've personally had good luck with GT Media with V9 Prime being my favourite from that company. But they no longer make them. You would probably have to source them used or from a reseller with new old stock.

I will follow replies to your question since I'd like to know too.

ADDED: I notice that the Edision Piccolino S2 model can be sourced from amazon Germany for US$65 including shipping to Canada. Not too bad!

Unfortunately, the new Edision models are running proprietary operating systems and do not run any open-source Linux or Enigma2 options at this time. Potential buyers should do careful research before committing to a purchase if a larger (and likely European) developer community hasn't yet adopted and/or reverse-engineered the platform. A closed platform can end OS development at any time.

Everyone else's mileage may vary.

I didn't know that and it is good to know. But at US$35 to US$45 a pop (couple cases of domestic beer...), the purchase isn't life changing. One advantage of a closed locked OS is that, assuming it works when new, then it should keep working. Just like an Amiko, GT Media, etc. Nowadays there are always risks that a company will go bankrupt or leave the industry. This type of box is better for those who just want to tune in some TV for viewing, not play around with the box as a hobby. There are pros and cons for closed or open boxes.

One problem with sourcing from overseas is that it will be set up with overseas satellites. So you would have to add the North American satellites yourself. If you can source it "locally" then hopefully the dealer will do that change for you before selling it to you.

...Somebody take me to school. These TBS tuners came up...
Indeed I see the DVB-USB-TBS driver in my plugins just like I found the driver for my OTA USB. You're really trying to get me to spend $$$. There's now no reason NOT to get a USB DVB-S2 tuner. Except that I already have at least 6 receivers.

Specs on TBS 5930

So...you could source from Canada:
TBS 5930: US$186 (delivered)

Or from USA:
TBS 5930: US$90 (delivered)

Or from TBS USA direct:
TBS 5930: US$79 (plus shipping)

Or from China:
TBS 5930: US$102 (delivered)

Card wise. I get a bit weary of the TBS cards branded Tenow (eBay). Clones? Don't know.
Anyone with one of the TBS USB tuners could pipe in. If your receiver cannot display 4:2:2 over HDMI. My guts tell me that even if a USB tuner on an E2 receiver could demodulate it. The receiver could not.
I do know the day I make a decision for a DVB-S2 card that it will be a professional model. I want to venture beyond TV/Radio and play around with data sats.
In your E2 receiver if you step back in package search and enter only dvb-usb. That'll really blow your mind.

I think El Bandido was using Sundtek USB dongles over a decade ago to get blind scan running on his development platform.
He has improved the Edision blind scans a lot over the years. I find mine produces good results now and even labels the found frequencies to one decimal place. The TNAP driver can search for very low SR values as well.

This seems to make sense. But the professional models, if available in non-PCI format, are very pricey. I now appreciate better the dilemma of a new person trying to buy an FTA receiver now. You can't join the hobby without the tools.

Can always learn something. Thanks

Only have a lappy? And limited USB receiver options? TBS PCIe cards seem to be on top of others? Unless you can afford a DecTek. Which used on eBay are still quite pricey.
Check out my rant on El Ban-deeters site. Post #9:

USB Tuner?
