I know for a fact that their "Southern customers" figure prominently in their business plan.

Stecle I hope your right. We've been hearing that maybe Bell will send up a new bird that we cant get in Calif. so we might have to switch to Shaw sometime so I sure hope they don't go away too!!

Onzz Sorry it can't happen. The frequency which G1 uses to downlink its signals, is not allowed to cover the majority of US territory. In fact the G1 extended Ku signal is granted under a temporary authority. At some time in the future, when F1R and F2 are replaced, I would imagine the footprint of the replacement birds will be reduced to be comparable with G1 and much like the Nimiq signals that only cover Canada (with a small spill over into the northern US states). Both Shaw Direct and Bell TV are only supposed to be available to Canadians and designing their antennas so that they only cover Canada will probably a requirement in the future.

A clarification . The ITU has assigned various longitudinal slots at certain frequencies to individual countries.

Canada controls their slots and frequencies thru first rights and can legally transmit throughout region 2 (all of north America and more) from those slots . No one else can transmit from those slots on Canadian assigned frequencies without Canadas permission.

What you can legally receive is a different issue but it's quite difficult to lock someone's view of the sky.

Many satellites are designed with broad coverage so that they can be assigned or reassigned to different services in their assigned region.
