My co-worker is moving overseas and wants to sell his Sony HD-300 receiver. What I'm wondering is, will it work with the current DirecTV?

I only ask because I've only seen the DirecTV branded receivers being sold as of recently.

Right now, I have a HR20, and I have a second TV that I'd like to add service to, but I want to avoid the leasing fee.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

It will still work for standard def on Directv and Over the air HD, but won't be able to pickup most HD channels on Directv.

It will work for everything except the new MPEG4 channels. You might avoid the "lease fee" but you will pay the same amount just re-named as "mirror fee". So just add a new DirecTV HD model.

Yeah, you would be much better off and "future proof" to get one of the newer HD receivers.
And as charper1 also says, even if you own the receiver, you still get docked a mirror fee, same price as the lease fee.
