I am trying to understand the distribution of TV from broadcaster to the cable headend. As I understand, the signals are transmitted via satellite and there are big dish'es that receive the signal at the headend. I also understand that for each satellite there is one dish.
Now, how many channels are typically carried by a single satellite? For example will NBC use one and ESPN use another?
If Comcast, for example, wants to include channels from anywhere in the world in their lineup, what would it mean for the investment in infrastructure? What I mean is if Comcast wants to show channels from China, Japan, Russia, South Africa, Brazil etc., would they have to increase the number of dishes which might be cost prohibitive?
Any pointers, explanations, clarifications will be an immense help.
