Was looking at the spotbeam maps for various areas a lot over the last few days. Each beam map for a particular beam has a green circle and a yellow circle. What does that mean. Is one for HD and one for SD or is one the strong footprint and one the weak?

I fall in the yellow perimiter for SLC stations does that pretty much mean I would be able to get HD networks if I move?

Check your SS on TP1.
6371 - KTVX [MPEG4 HD] moved from Ciel-2 129W TP 18 ConUS beam to Ciel-2 129W TP 01 Spotbeam 18 (NA)(Salt Lake City, UT-ABC)
6372 - KUTV [MPEG4 HD] moved from Ciel-2 129W TP 18 ConUS beam to Ciel-2 129W TP 01 Spotbeam 18 (A) (H)(Salt Lake City, UT-CBS)
6373 - KSL [MPEG4 HD] moved from Ciel-2 129W TP 18 ConUS beam to Ciel-2 129W TP 01 Spotbeam 18 (A) (H)(Salt Lake City, UT-NBC)
6374 - KSTU [MPEG4 HD] moved from Ciel-2 129W TP 18 ConUS beam to Ciel-2 129W TP 01 Spotbeam 18 (A) (H)(Salt Lake City, UT-FOX)

Hey Trouthead, just a guess but I think it would relate to relative signal strength you would receive. Like on the on the "Point Dish" screen (Menu/6/1/1). Inside the green would be good. Between green and yellow would be marginal. Outside the yellow....DANGER DANGER.

Check it out. Go to "Point Dish", and select 129tp1. If your signal is green (yellow, if you're willing to take a chance), "move" to SLC.

Google Earth SB maps?

I noticed that the SB maps are done with Google Earth. Is there a link to the Google Earth file for those? Or are they tediously hand-drawn?

It should also be noted that the ABC Salt Lake City HD channel is still unavailable. The SD version is available so you will get all of the networks but you just won't get them all in HD.

You mean they were making me feel sorry for them for nothing? :)

I know they had the data you gave them (thank you) but the drawing was done by hand.

No matter what its a lot of work and I appreciate all their hard work (including yours Nelson as without your data I dont think they could have done it) :D

Sat Guys are the best

Over the years I have relied on this site for more good information than I know how to thank you all for. Once again IMPORTANT TV questions have been answered.

Got home went to point dish utility and went to sat 129 transponder #1 got a green signal bar and a signal strength of 61.

Now does this mean that I get a good enough signal for the SLC networks? If I move to SLC I will get HD FOX, CBS, and NBC, RSN for SLC and ABC in SD??

If so I guess I will be packing the moving VAN. :)

Thanks guys for a lot of help.

Hand done by Digiblur and Qwert1515. :)

I know Scott had a ton of stuff going on when I was doing this with his server problems so he may have forgotten. Check the top of the uplink report where we first had the beam maps. There's a big thanks to nelson61 for the map data.

I'll fill you in on a little back story on the beam maps:

I saw nelson61 had all these cool satellite coverage maps. I approached him and asked how he made them. He showed me and I asked if I could use the data for beam maps on TheList. He was a huge help and showed the KML files for GoogleEarth. I knew the KML files wouldn't work out well for my idea. I wanted to make it easy so it just be one click away for everyone, so I knew I had to make them into jpgs for you guys. There are several "circles" on each beam map for each spotbeam on 110 and 129....and there are a lot of them! It took me several days but I loaded each beam map in GoogleEarth, only selected the two circles we needed for standard size dishes, changed the color to green and yellow for easy viewing, rotated, sized, and saved the screen to correct filename. I did this for each spotbeam. Just to give you an idea I think there are over 100 jpgs file I made by hand. So in reality they are not drawn by hand but manipulated by hand for easy viewing.

During this creation process of the jpgs I had a crazy idea of making hyperlinks on the spotbeams on the uplink reports. I already had the data since I was going to send the filename to qwert1515 for TheList data that the uplink report tool FTPs to the site everytime there are changes.

So to sum it all up...it's been a three person process involved in this:

nelson61 - did all the leg work of getting the satellite data and into KMLs for GoogleEarth so I could create the 100+ jpgs.

digiblur - making all the jpgs from the KMLs, coding the uplink tool to handle the new data and create the hyperlinks on the uplink reports, and linking the correct files to the hundreds and hundreds of TPs that make up all the spotbeams

qwert1515 - taking the beam file data I send to TheList and allowing clickable spotbeam maps on TheList. (I don't think this is finished yet but I have seen an alpha test of it and it looks great so far)

So there you have it.... Three people donating their time to this hobby and making SatelliteGuys.us a one stop shop for all of your satellite information!

Many thanks to all of you from this forum denizen.

KML files and the 100's of jpegs

Yes, indeed many thanks; they do help a lot.

Would it be possible for the more adventurous of us to be able to download the KML files for Google Earth? We could pinpoint our own locations and even try hard to find out what SBs we could "see"....

Excellent work! This is one of the great things about this site, there are people who take complex issues like this and condense it down into easy-to-understand data. Want to see if your house is under a spotbeam? Click on the link and look at the graphic.

Thanks a million!

Many thanks to all of you from this forum denizen.

:up excellent and very time consuming work by all and makes it a lot easier for us that are not so knowledgeable Thanks

PS....i did like an earlier posters idea that you drew the maps in by hand though and got a visual of you guys arguing over who gets to use the green crayon and who gets to use the yellow one ;)

Now with Ceil 2 can I just have 1 dish?
