What viewsat model?The ultra has a digital output and I think the others do as well

Non HD Viewsats:
For AC3 you need an Optical cable to a Dolby Receiver.

I have the Platinum and it does have a SPIDF cable out

Get an Optical cable and connect to a Dolby Digital Receiver and you're all set.

I picked up a Soundblaster Extigy external on fleabay $20, then ran spidf cable into it. Works on all the channels, ac3 or standard audio. Sometimes it stutters when switching between straight optical audio and dolby. I have it and the reciever running through one of those digital rf modulators from sadoun for whole house TV on each reciever.

Here's an old thread on Sonic Voom Headphones.
In addition to whatever they are designed to do, they also have:
- optical input of dolby
- RCA digital input of dolby
- RCA output of decoded sound
- cheap price, if they're still around.
