Bios not showing hard drive

I bought a new 160gb hard drive for my Dell dimension 4400. When I go to the Bios the new hard drive does not show up. i put the old 40gb hard drive in with Windows XP on it and it doesn't show up either. I replaced the IDE cables but I still get a message no boot device.. system halted. Just hope I didn't fry the mother board.

If you can get to bios then board isn't fried. Check cmos battery. Usually there is a jumper you can reset

And check the setting in bios.

Did you update the bios? Can you tell us what order you did things and when the drives stopped responding? Are there three connections on the ide cable: Motherboard, drive, drive or just two: Motherboard, drive? Position on the cable is important. Jumpers are important. Did you unplug the computer before opening it up?
