Cable Box plus Hard Drive?

OK folks, question....

I think the best solution for T V down the Shore is a Cablebox, DVR, and an external hard drive..

Now, here's what I want to do, and you tell me if this is possible...

Setup the Cablevision IO box downstairs on the main TV. Setup DVR to record my favorite channels....and store those channels DIRECTLY on the portable hard drive.

Is something like this possible? Would it be c ompatible with the new portable HD I bought?

Yes, it is but the DVR will record the program to the Hard Disk that has the most space (portable or internal).

Not to mention that anything recorded on the SATA drive is only viewable on the DVR it was recorded from.
