WASHINGTON, Dec 18 (Reuters) - The U.S. cable industry on Thursday said competition for subscribers will likely intensify after media conglomerate News Corp. (Australia:NCP.AX - News) gains control of the No. 1 U.S. satellite service DirecTV.

But National Cable & Telecommunications Association President Robert Sachs said cable operators can likely outperform pay television rivals since they offer high-speed Internet and telephone services, products the rivals have had trouble providing in the past.
