can't align bud 10' dish

I went through the entire arc today and got nothing. I have NO
reference point to start. Have no idea what degree the dish
is pointing to. ...

I would try to point the dish at a strong signal from any c band satellite just to find out if your lnbf is set right and then set it with the true south bird and then line it up with the arc. It might be a good idea to put the original lnb (if you have it) back to line up the dish and then reinstall the BSC621-2D when done. Your compass should work fine for finding your true south bird. Hook the actuator momentarily to a car battery to get the dish to the zenith or high point of the arc. Then loosen up the bolts on the dish and try tweaking by hand to find the satellite. C band is pretty forgiving but this might get you close and then you will have to correct you other problems with the shims and other settings. If it does not follow the arc you will still have to adjust even more. ;)

I set the declination bolt as follows:
Polar bar is 29.62 degrees. I added 4.20 to this giving 33.82 degrees.
This is what I set the declination bolt to by reading on the back plate
of the dish.
OR should I have subtracted 4.20 from 29.62 giving 25.42 degrees.
Just making sure I read things right as nothings working.
 
The bsc6210-2d has a retangular item the you can insert to get
circular signals.
I went through the entire arc today and got nothing. I have NO

is pointing to. The Uniden pusher I have only gives a click count.
My only tools are a compass and an inclinator.
I have tried to find a satellite near the top of the arc but was
unsuccessful. However I do have a theory about what some of my
troubles might be. The actuator arm causes the outside edge of the
dish to wobble about 3 inches. This is caused by the spacers on the
bolt to keep it from hitting the mounting bar that it fastens to. Not
sure what to do about that. Also the polar mount is off about 1/8
to 1/4 inch and ramming a screwdriver in there and tightening
the bolts doesn't work. Maybe putting some steel shims in and
then tightening the bolts might solve that problem until I start
move the dish back and forth for alignment.
There used to be a few things on analog c-band that I could get a
reference point from but no more.
I did take a tv out to the dish and I stared at a blank screen all day.
Nothing is ever easy......


Well you cannot find a signal with only a compass and inclinometer. You either need a satellite meter or you need a tv display hooked up to a receiver hooked to the dish lnb.

I assume 82 west is your due south satellite. Go to Lyngsat and input the settings on the top transponder on the list 12224 20000 and leave the other settings auto.

Have your receiver set to that transponder, Go to dish zenith. loosen whatever bolts you have that lock the spin of the dish on your mast

Slowly spin the dish on the mast until you get a signal

If that doesn't find you something, then loosen the elevation bolts so you can lift the dish up and down, Then slowly lift up and down and spin around

try that
 
First on the agenda for today is to take the slop out of the actuator arm
and put a shim on the polar mount to make it plumb.

The satellites at the top of my arc at 29 degrees latitude are nimik4 (ku),
amc9 (ku) and Brasilsat b4 (c) with nothing on it. Question is how can I do
anything with a KU satellite before using a C-band satellite?

The Pansat 2800a has to scan a position before anything can be seen on
the TV screen so I have a definite problem. When there was something on
Analog c-band then I could position the dish from that and then scan with the
pansat and fine tune from there. BUT, this is no longer the case.
Am I making any sense?

The problem is, a compass and an inclinometer is only going to get you closer to where you want to be. You have to peak your dish with a some kind of direct input from a receiver.

Pansat 2800a has a positioner setting that can be set to 1.2 or usals.
That combined with a v-box could position my new dish Right?
Throw away the Uniden sq530. If so, what v-box would you recommend?
My 24" actuator is 5 or more years old and I have no idea what voltage a
v-box would have and how it would be acceptable to the actuator.

I think I am going to have to junk this recontitioned 10 footer.
It still has a wobble in it after I had new bushings made for it.
The outside edge still moves 3" when lifted.
I have another 10' c-band deep dish. I t has the lnb in the center
on a pole. Could I take the fine mesh off the bad dish and put it
on this c-band dish and use it for c\ku?

Other than all that a gentleman in a satellite store recommended
that I get a solid 8'. He said the gain would be better. He said
I could dismount it and put it in my garage during a hurricane.
Lot cheaper than a mesh dish.
Your thoughts would be most appreciated

He is right about the gain being better, but it's not realistic to take the dish down in high winds, unless you have a long warning. If you go with a solid, try to get a spun aluminum and not a steel dish -easier to handle. If you have some warning, the best information I heard is to leave the dish connected, mark your position carefully and to point the dish straight up - like if you were listening for alien signals.

I have a G-box as a dish mover. I do not like the automatic position function on it, so I don't have the motor connected to anything but the G-box. I don't bother with the name function in the G-box either but name 101w as "01" and 127w as "27" 55 west as "55" .

Most guys like the G-boxes better than the V-box for big dish moving.

This thread is so depressing and heart-breaking, I can't bear to read through it line-by-line again, but . . .
Is this a case of: I can't track the arc?
Or is this a case of: I can't ever get even ONE C-band signal anywhere?

With so many variables, has anyone double checked the following?
- LNB power?
- proper receiver settings including switches and LO for the 621?
- SKEW for the 621??? (this'll kill ya if it's wrong!)

There are several versions for the 621, and how you connect to them matters, how you skew them matters, and ALL VERSIONS ARE NOT THE SAME!!!!!

Please see the Geo-Orbit site I posted above, and work methodically through the setup 'till you can get a C-band signal near your true south satellite.
Do not attempt Ku band ... NOT for initial setup, until you have C-band tracking across the arc!!!
 
In answer to you questions Anole, I managed on the Uniden to get one station
on the old Telstar5 location. It was the preacher. That's all I ever got.
Yes, I read the site you mentioned and most of it is over my head.
I am going to junk the dish as it does have a wobble and might be some of
my problems. Then I am going to junk the Uniden sq 530.

I need names of manufactures of the G-box. I'll get one of those and then
set up another dish that might be better.

And Anole, you couldn't feel any more depressed than I am.

The Gbox v3000 is sold by Sadoun. (see my signature for a direct link) - ;)
I wouldn't buy any of the Vboxes... certainly not the older models.
They have a new one, but no one has shown it to be the equal of the Gbox, much less superior.

Guess it's just worn out.
I have another old 10' c-band with a button hook in the center.
It seems to be in fairly decent shape.
I'm sure it will work with c-band.
If I take the mesh off the one I am junking and wire it to the mesh of
the c-band dish I should be able to get C and KU on it. Is this feasible?
Or just use it for C-band.
Is there any reason I shouldn't try to use a button hook type is dish?

If the button hook is solid and centered, people have had OK luck with them, but if they wobble, some guys have centered them and held them in place with guy wires or thin metal tubes.
