CBS Chief Leslie Moonves Addresses Upcoming Negotiations With Dish Network

Honestly,I wouldn't give a plug nickel for all of the CBS owned channels. How many more shows can they make out of cis and ncis?Watched Under the Dome during the summer, can always catch it streaming later,it's not what I'd call must see tv.
Not to mention all the cookie cutter Chuck Lorre comedies(?).

That's what I thought. They're banking, in reality, on the O&Os and Showtime being pulled to cause a big unrest. I don't see anyone freaking out over TV Guide Network being pulled, most CW affiliates are owned by Tribune or another company, and CBS Sports doesn't have a premier sport that would cause great unrest (it's the least cared about behind ESPN, FOX Sports 1&2, and NBC Sports Net).

The CBS chief is taking Dish Network Chairman Charlie Ergen at his word after he said this week that there’s a way for broadcasters to benefit from his Hopper DVR

Anyone remember the movie Looker? The idea behind the advertising advantage? We have to assume that there is at least similar technology at work today. Perhaps the autohop is not just speeding past commercials but encoding a subliminal message on the sub-carrier frequency that entices us to buy things?

It could happen.

I remember it. I loved that movie and have it stored on my external hard drive. The idea that they could use virtual actors with subliminal messaging in their eyes sounded so sci fi back in 81 when the movie first aired. But now they do use virtual computer generated images in video games and even movies . It wouldn't be that much of a stretch that they could do subliminal messaging in these shows today if they really wanted to.

This from the man whose network can't figure out how not to show the Mentalist at midnight on Sunday's just because of the (fairly regular) length of a football game. I haven't seen recent ratings but both The Good Wife and The Mentalist have taken a hit by moving to Sundays. Bad enough they are up against Sunday Night Football but it is anyone's guess what time they will start. They don't even advertise them at a specific time anymore. The commercials say The Good Wife following The Amazing Race and The Mentalist following The Good Wife. And as I've mentioned before all this genius has to say about it is "these show have loyal fans who can figure out when the shows are on". Idiot.

Hey Les here's a newsflash...here is a perfect example of why viewers time shift their viewing. And when they do, guess what they are more likely to do? Skip commercials. With or without autohop. Getting off my soapbox now....:p

Next up: Complaints about fast forward. Even if AutoHop disappears, the networks aren't going to like that customers can fast forward past the commercials. On my 722, when watching DVR content, I use the skip button. Shame on me.

I was at a friend's place about a year ago, she had Suddenlink, I think, and when we watched some on demand content (Sons of Anarchy), you couldn't fast forward in it at all (if I remember correctly). And yes, the on demand content had ads, and you couldn't skip them.

Simple solution for Sunday night: When football goes late (not if) deduct time from 60 Minutes. Even the geniuses at CBS can figure that one out. When their 5 viewers complain tell them sorry we'll rerun it at midnight.

Of course I remember it, Susan Dey was in it!

Some of the Dish on-demand movies I've downloaded do this too. Sucks. I refuse to watch it if it won't let me skip past ads, although I got into a big argument with my wife the last time this happened. She wanted to watch the movie anyway. Unfortunately there appears to be no way (on my VIP DVRs) to see in advance of the streaming/download which programs have unskippable ads, and which ones don't. It does warn you about this when you start watching the program. I probably have to look more closely at the content provider, but that's not so easy either, depending upon how I found the program I wanted to watch.

Maybe something like that is in store for the Hopper. Instead of Autohop, you get AutoForcedView. :( I'm sure Moonves would be delighted to have such a thing. And I sure as hell hope Charlie doesn't sell out like that. I worry from his remarks that he wants to insert his own targeted ads into locals, which seems like a pointless exercise if Autohop is still enabled.

The auto hopper is going to create a problem, it the advertiser cannot get there ads to be seen this removes the motovation for them to advertise on tv, and the money that goies with it. which in turn removes the motovation for the networks to nagotiate with dish for anything. Most people depend on the local networks to bring them local news, weather and programiing. At one time the Satcos did not have the ability to bring you local tv (fed regulation) As soon as they were able dish became a viable replacement for cable. So the ability to bring you the local network realy fueled the rapid growth of the satco industry. If Dish wants to continue with the auto hop they can expect to loose most or all the local programing, can they live without it, based on history I do not think so.

My local CBS is owned by Media General. Already gone. I get it OTA and if Dish keeps it up I will get a TiVo, so I get get the guide with my OTA locals AND SKIP COMMERCIALS?

The network model of TV is continuing its decline over the last quarter century. Network news had 55 million viewers in 1982. It is now about 22 million viewers. Commercial time has almost doubled in the same period( 12 minutes to 20 minutes per hour of programming). Even cable channel viewership is declining. The internet is gaining users as fast as TV is losing them. In the same period sport viewership has increased by 62%. Most people watch sports live and see the commercials. Trying to penalize Dish for Autohop is the efforts of desperate business people to blame Dish for their poor management.

And how many news options were there in 1982? I think you're comparing apples to oranges. Also, most folks are interested in their LOCAL news. Do you have any stats on how many people watch local news?
