I live orange county, California, I read of some new installs getting Hd equipment when they ordered SD because they live in an mpeg4 only area. How do I find out where mpeg 4 areas are and is southern California an Hd only area?

Orange county is the LA DMA isn't it? That would give you zero chance of getting HD with an SD order.

If you want HD signup for HD. The HD Access fee can be waived if you call after the install and do auto pay, they will waive it for 2 years upon request.

I think new customers have free HD for life plus new customers can get 1 HD DVR and 1 HD box for free.

the only markets that fall under this category are ones where there are no SD versions of the Big 4 Networks. On the D* site search "locals" and plug in the zip. If it shows channels under both the SD & HD column (same channels) you are not in a MPEG4 market

Unfortunately, the only DMA like this in your area is Palm Springs, CA

Correct, & they can also get up to 2 additional HD receivers for $50 each.

BUT, you should also add that in order to get any added HD boxes for FREE or reduced prices beyond the first, you must add MRV service as well. ;)
