Well, Dish put up a whole new dish today. Basically a 500. Twenty year old technology.

Parabolic reflectors haven't changed much since Heinrich Hertz first used one to demonstrate the existence of radio waves in 1888. The LNBF set they hung on it is a whole different story.

Talking about the new 500? They don't need 3 positions anymore, at least on WA, so being back to 110/119 it's back to 500 as all the dish that is needed, but they're now offering a new twin (beyond the HDD Twin) for the hopper era. I say "offering," but I think they're thus far restricting it to new installs.

Could be the center wire in the cable shrinks back away from the connection in cold weather.

Is it the same as an old D500? I mean dimensionally such as focal length, etc. (it appears to be identical other than the "Y," the LNBF and the black paint). Would this new "Y" go on the old 500?

The Dish is the exact same dish. The LNB and bracket are not.

I don't know about that. Most people don't care what dish they have as long as it works. The only one here that has consistently requested one is Charles. That's a bit of a minority.

All you need is the new 'Y' adapter and DPPH Twin LNBF. And any old D500 if you don't already have one. Prowl eBay- some dealer's gonna put it up there, you might have to pay...

I have one for him, I just need to get a good box that will keep it from getting damaged

Ours has worked well. It handles pouring rain really well with high winds. Though it don't get that cold here though the heat will be interesting..

Interesting that they have conditioned people to regard smaller dishes as outdated. Remember when tiny was all anyone was wanting? The 500 is the closest thing to reverting all the way back to the original single-slot dish, when the actual size of it (or lack thereof) was its big selling point.

As far as for tech, the dish itself of course is completely irrelevant as compared to the electronics coupled thereto. It's always been and ever will be simply a parabolic pan. In this the D500 has come through iterations of having separate old-school LNBFs, then to a Twin that was really just the same and also needed switching for any use, to the DP Twin that could do 2 rx's with no switching, to the DPP Twin with full bandstacking and aux input, to now this DPPH Twin for who knows what kind of capability.

I think the 1000+ dish was a good size success too. I never had rain fade issues until my 1000.2 replaced it. Signal strength is good but still fades out with rain.
