So my wife and I are in the process going into business with my brother to be D* dealers. Sites like Satelliteguys and DBStalk have been invaluable for learning information about D* that I wouldn't have even dreamed asking about. Thanks everyone for that.

So anyway, we get an email last week about up coming changes concerning retail stores and D* in general. Amongst a bunch of other info that was there were the following two tidbits I figured people would be interested in.

» CUSTOMER SERVICE CALL PRICE REDUCTION - In an effort to continue providing our customers with the best service available, we've reduced the cost for all standard in-home service calls. Effective Monday, October 20th the new pricing will be $49.95 (from $79.95).

» SWM INSTALLATIONS BEGIN 10/22 - Effective 10/22/08, all HD and HD DVR installations will require the use of the new SWM KaKu LNB. The LNBs should already be shipping to your locations now.

Isn't that the one that allows 1 line for dual recording functionality instead of 2?

Yep, that's one of its benefits.
So.... If I have an install scheduled for November 14th, what are the chances that I'll get that SWM? I have 2 DVRs and I would LOVE to not have to deal with 4 installed lines.

If they're suddenly allocating them for all the HD installs, I'm guessing your chances of getting lucky and getting one just dropped for a little while.

But if they're all on their way and it says starting 10/22 all installations require the new SWM, why would my chances have dropped? To me this news supports the idea that I WOULD be getting this. Or does this stuff not apply to installers, like Halsted (the people doing the installation.)

Are you getting HD? You just said DVRs, so I took it to mean that they weren't HD DVRs. If they are HD DVRs, then I would say you probably are, otherwise...

Oh. My bad. Yeah I have an HD DVR. Of course though you could have looked at my signature to see I have the HR20 and the H20. :p

Other than 1 cable to rule them all, and less holes drilled, any other pluses to have SWM?

You don't need the separate BBC connectors. Their functionality is built into the SWM equipment. The BBCs are just another part that can fail so by eliminating them, that's one less point of failure.

as its been explained to me they are to be standard on new installs only movers connects are typically going to be using the traditional 4 output lnb due to compatibility issues with the swm and all receivers prior to the d12-*** , R16-*** and h20-*** , hr20-*** however of course that can alway change and also depends on the tech. the tech could ultimatly decide that it would be easier to use a swm lnb if all of your equiptment is compatible

So with this new dish you can have 1 line going to your HD DVR and you can record 2 shows at once? Not bad. Could you have 2 lines running to the HD DVR though? Would that give you a third or 4th HD stream? I would guess not and am probably dreaming here But, will all of us customers who have the latest current dish need to upgrade to this new dish or no?

Do you think if I called the installers and requested that they install that version of the SWM they'd at least be receptive to the idea? I have an HR20-100, H10-100, and a DVR Plus (I don't know the model number but I got it in 2006 for Xmas as a gift to my mom), so I don't think there'd be any equipment conflicts.

Your H10-100 (Tivo model I believe) would be a problem unless you actually meant the H20-100. Since you've had your DVR plus since 2006 it is probably a R15 which means it isn't compatible. What you would need is the SWM8 multiswitch which has 3 legacy ports for non SWM compatible equipment.
